No step on snek bro. Leave the snakes alone. I really doubt they're gonna chase you down and attack you. Keep your eyes open and if you see one, take a wide loop around it. Also the snake striking you is probably faster than you are with a knife. You're putting your body within 1' of a snake to kill it for no reason. That's not a bright idea. If you just wanna use the excuse to buy something, [kabar kukuri] (https://www.amazon.com/Ka-Bar-2-1249-9-Kukri/dp/B001H53Q8A) would be about the only "knife" I'd try to kill a snake with. I'm really not a fan of getting that close to snakes on purpose though.

I second this, but I'd recommend paying a little more for a Kabar. I take this camping and it's very solid, should last forever. http://www.amazon.com/Ka-Bar-2-1249-9-Kukri/dp/B001H53Q8A/ref=pd_sbs_sg_1

Kabar Kukri

Great cheap beater kukri.

u/ARKnife · 4 pointsr/knives

I'd get him one he can use and beat as well.

KaBar or Cold Steel are great options there.

u/eltonnovs · 3 pointsr/knives

Kukris don't have to be that expensive if don't mind a 'modern' take on them.

Besides the Ontario and Condor /u/lowlife9 mentioned maybe consider Cold steel Royal Kukri or Ka-bar Kukri and compliment it with a Ontario Rat 7 or Rat 5, that's a pretty can-do-all combination..

I use one as my catch-all machete/hatchet-type thing for clearing. I'm building roads through some woodland that my family owns. Mine is the Ka-Bar and I had a bit of a time getting the edge on it that I wanted, but now it's easy to keep sharp and I really enjoy using it. I don't bring an axe any more, just that, a weed-whip and a chainsaw.

Now I just need to get around to making a belt sheath for a lefty...

I bought this one from Amazon. I've already used and abused it several times, and after a cleaning, it looks brand spanking new.

Mine came with a leather sheath that is nothing fancy, but gets the job done. Also, mine came sharpened out of the box.

YMMV - My use for kukris is brush busting and as such, after owning several have settled on a 1085 Kabar Kukri as a standard hard use tool.

Sure! Here

The thing with bug out bags is first figuring out where you're going to bug out to and how you're going to get there. Do you have relatives that live 100 miles away? If so can you walk there if your car is unusable? I'm still struggling with this as my family is in the exact opposite direction of where I'd want to bug out to in a disaster/ SHTF situation.

Unfortunately, BOB's can get pretty expensive quickly - I picked my bag and contents for an indefinite bug out so naturally I ended up spending a good amount of $ on it - BUT spaced out purchases throughout many months as I also didn't have the money to be spending all at once.

Anyway, if you want to keep it under $50, I'd suggest looking for second hand bags....even for a halfway decent one, this can bring your budget to at least half that. Ideally, you'll want one with an internal frame and a belt strap. This will keep the weight off your shoulders and distributed evenly throughout - this is especially important if you plan on walking a bunch of miles. If you're not planning on walking far, then this isn't much of an issue but to me, bugging out assumes some walking involved.

Following the survival rule of 3's, the first item you'll need to address is some sort of shelter. Get some 550 paracord and a decent tarp. This shouldn't cost too much and you can make a quick & easy A frame type shelter. Even a few heavy duty trash bags could go a long way (ie solar shower, solar still).

I'd def get at least a light summer sleeping bag unless you feel ok sleeping on a bundle of pine sprigs. Do you have decent hiking boots and wool socks ready to go? I see a lot of bug out bags skimping on this but to me is one of the most important things to have.

Can you start a fire with the fire striker you have? How about if the ground is wet? Not saying you need to get one of these but also not sure if you would be able to process wood with a leatherman.

Next is water. Do you have a cup/ canteen to hold/ boil water in? If you're on the run, get something like this. But if you have time to boil any stagnant water, the canteen with cup linked above is a good idea to have.

For food, yeah protein bars, cans of tuna are cheap and good to have. I got a few of these. But they actually get kinda heavy quick (3 days worth of food in one block). For longer term, I'm currently looking into a decent fishing rod and setting snares.

Hope this helps! If you want to spend a bit more $ I can share with you some of the other contents I have..

ka-bar machete is pretty good.

u/joeslide · 2 pointsr/knives

I have a Ka Bar kurkri. I like it much better than a machete...

u/FuZhongwen · 2 pointsr/knives

I have the black K-Bar kukri

There's a lot I like about it after 2 years of regular use. It's a really functional blade design, really durable, undeniable cool factor.

BUT mine has some flaws that I would like to avoid if I ever buy another one.
It is heavy. I mean it feels like you're swinging a mallet, not a machete. Good for tackling thick wood, terrible for light brush.

The inside curve is really tough to get sharp without a round stone. Makes it difficult to maintain when you use it like I do. It's the most frustrating knife I've ever sharpened. High grit Wet/dry paper on a telephone book works OK, but it takes a long time to repair nicks.

There is something about the top of the handle that makes it kind of uncomfortable when using it for long stretches. I think its the sharp corners of where the handle flanges out at the top. I may try to grind these round with a dremel and see what happens.

So I'd be interested to hear if this one avoids those problems. The handle does look more comfortable than mine.

Nice, I never really got into non-PC gaming but I've heard really good things from the Halo series! As for finding a khukri, you should definitely check your local knife store for one made in 1085 or 1095 steel but if you don't mind getting one online, I'd definitely give this a try!

My favorite tool for cracking coconuts is a khukri. Ka-Bar Khukri is a great starter khukri, well balanced and holds a great edge.

Kabar Kukri

buckyballs If you are playing to buy, buy soon. They may be shut down.

Hey if you can go $54.36, the KABAR kukri is a great machete. I’ve used it a lot backpacking trips.

Edit: Just re-read about budget - the first comment is a great idea!

u/TheIcelander · 1 pointr/gifs

I've got one of these for landscaping and dispatching the odd snake.

u/Nomadlord · 1 pointr/collapse

OK cool. In that case I would suggest
Getting rid of Gator combo axe, "E-Z" Saw, Sportsman wood saw. Replace with( http://www.amazon.com/Ka-Bar-2-1249-9-Black-Kukri-Machete/dp/B001H53Q8A/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1332419493&sr=8-1 )

And ( http://www.amazon.com/Chainmate-CM-24SSP-24-Inch-Survival-Pocket/dp/B0026OOS60/ref=sr_1_1?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1332419528&sr=1-1 )

That saw will do more and weighs a lot less than those axes, and the Kabar Kukri Machete will do anything you need it to in the wilderness. Also can chop into doors or other objects for urban situations. Keep ur other smaller knifes tho. If planning on being in urban mostly I would invest in a small pry bar or maybe a small hooligan bar.

Is your 20' rope 7 strand paracord? if Not throw it out and get paracord. Be careful to make sure its military grade and has 7 inner strands and get more than 20' of paracord. If the rope you have is good climbing rope, then keep it.

Keep only 2 flint strikers, get some bic lighters and put them in a ziplock bag. Then get some cotton balls smoother them in Vaseline, then put them in a ziplock bag. That will be your fire kit.

Take the duct tape rolls and re roll them on a thick piece of cardboard, that way you have more space.

Some extra batteries for ur flash lights. Also I suggest getting a headlamp as while ur in urban survival or combat you will want both ur hands free.

Make sure ur misc clothes u have several several extra pairs of socks. Most important clothing you can have. Make sure to have them in ziplock bags.

Also a rain poncho and a tarp. Make sure the tarp is pretty durable and has gusseted corners.

There are a few more things but I am doing this at 5am my time and very tired. message me back about any questions you have. Good luck out there bro.

Sucks about your leg, hope it gets better.

That is a beautiful knife. Mine's a Ka-bar.

u/Morphenomenal · 1 pointr/knifeclub

I like my Ka-Bar kukri

High carbon, not too pricey, Ka-Bar name. I've chopped down small trees with it.

u/Robdigity · 0 pointsr/knifeclub

I have been looking at them for a while now and cant find a ton of info on them that are in the under $100 range. I haven't had the money to spend on one willy-nilly but I think I have it narrowed down to two that I'm interested in the Ka-bar and the Ontario.

u/1_small_step · 0 pointsr/BuyItForLife

I have a Ka-Bar kukri that I love, and I bet will be Bifl. I have a couple other machetes and the kukri is my go to.

The blade is pretty thick so it would be hard to break, but the length is just right to make it easy to handle. The coating will help prevent rusting. The handle is solid and I don't see it ever breaking (I've broken the handle on a different machete).

Most recent task I used it for was to strip all the branches off our 7 ft Christmas tree after Christmas. Only took like 5 minutes using the Ka-Bar.
