[Cable clampers for a counter weight. I ended up using 9 total. 8 at the far end to pull back the cable. One at the front which is stopped at the pulley to give me a "relax" area. So its only pulling when I step out. This size clamper rubbed off some rubber from the "skinnier" rubber connector that's plugged in to the headset. I actually had a really complicated set up initially with extension wires running through the ceiling with a moving arm. It worked mediocre for the all work it took, and was too painful to untangle. The golden rule of keep it simple was hard learned.

Some notes:

1 - I set up my cable with one of these kits, in my experience unless you train yourself, because you're still going to primarily turn in one direction, the wire will still get twisted, you need to take off the headset and untwist it occasionally (if you feel it pulling)

2 - This screw needs to be in a drywall anchor, or a bigger screw into a stud. It might feel snug now and work fine enough for you to ignore everyone's advice thus far, but it will eventually tear out. Best case scenario, you're left with a small hole.

Anywho...

I love them too...had to fiddle a bit with keeping the clips from bunching up with spacing and such. Also had to to bend the hooks to vigorous pulling wouldn't unclip the retractors from the ceiling clips that came in my kit. Not wireless by any means, but I no longer have a chunk of brain devoted to cable-on-floor-management.

Why don't you use a cable management system? If done right, it can be more effective than wireless without having to worry about battery life, latency, heat, and additional battery weight and sensors on your head.

Honestly you can just save yourself the $300 and buy These off of amazon and hang them up. Ever since I got them no more tangled cables and I have almost all the freedom from having it wireless. There retractable so the cable is always above you.

It came with pretty much everything I needed. The seller has fast and good communication as well when I requested additional hardware anchors. Highly recommend. I’ll never go back to playing VR with cables dragging on the floor and until wireless VR is bug free, this will be my solution. The only issue I have witnessed is with taller people. My buddy is about 6’3” and while he had no issues demoing my Rift, I was nervous about him getting too immersed and tangling himself in the cables.

Start with games rated as Comfort or Comfortable. I'd avoid SkyrimVR for a bit until you get more used to VR. SkyrimVR is a bit janky and is more likely to induce nausea, especially if it has a hard time maintaining 80fps, which is likely (and even moreso with mods.) The game isn't a very good showcase or introduction to VR, as it was shoehorned in and not fully optimized for VR.

Highly recommended games to start out with are Superhot VR, Space Pirate Trainer, Rec Room, I Expect You To Die, Beat Saber, Robo Recall, Dead & Buried, Job/Vacation Simulator.

For movement controls, stick with teleportations until you get your VR legs.

Take breaks often the first week or two.

Don't be alarmed when you experience what's called virtual reality disassociation (where you briefly wonder if your hands or objects you pick up are real or VR.) This sensation usually goes away after a few days.

If you experience motion sickness or nausea, don't force it and take a break. Not everyone experiences this, but those that do will find the feeling goes away with more use. Ginger tablets or gums can help alleviate this.

Don't use a liquid cleanser on the lenses, just use a soft microfiber cloth to wipe it in a circular motion. Also don't leave the lenses exposed to direct sunlight, as the magnified rays would burn the display screen.

This is exactly how my setup is. I run 2 sequences of 3 in my apartment with a huge vaulted ceiling.

It works great.

I've had it for about a week now and I've only actually tangled the cables themselves once, and honestly, it was on me.

Just be careful about giving yourself enough/too much slack. I've had to make adjustments on mine to keep me from smacking the headset cable during big downward swipes in BeatSaber, for example.

I may eventually add a third set of these, the 2 tend to create a little too much hanging slack.

I would recommend /u/BHPhreak go with these cables, and just go overboard on them. They're super cheap, just order more than you think you'd ever need, that way even if one breaks or something, you can quickly replace it. (though, they seem super sturdy)

I bought one of the under-$20 cable management kits (retractable keychains and rubber bands, really). It changed my experience to the point that I decided I didn't really need wireless.

I'm using two of them in series and this makes the resistance you get from those things barely noticeable - except on the very edge of my play area.

Regarding the "future of VR" I'd assume there will be 2 device categories (analog to PC / Notebooks).
One is designed for high-end performance / low weight the other one for mobility / ease of use - You just can't do both aspects without compromising ....

I have a ceiling fan overhead. So I bought a lighting boom and extend my cable overhead with that.

I attached this boom to this mount, to the top of my entertainment center. And then used the same cable management everyone sells... I grabbed this one.

I put another loop on the strap just above the wheel, and ran the cable through it. That ring is a little loose, but not too loose, and it is held to the strap by a thick elastic, so it has a bit of a give to it. That helped. In general I do try to limit my spinning around. It sucks, but the cable on Rift S is just too thick and rigid for it.

How big is your play space? Distance from PC to far end of opposite wall, link to overhead system you bought?

My office is 11’ wide. With 6’ hdmi/usb extension I am able to run up the wall, across ceiling to within 12” of opposite wall then loop back towards center of playspace about and put my last pulley there. Only using 5 of the six pulleys. Have no issue getting the HMD anywhere in the playspace.

Using this Kiwi System. The key is looping back towards center of playspace but about 18” short of center so cable is still directed a bit behind my head in neutral position. Also creating a very small loop in cable on HMD and zip tie it that to top headstrap so there can absolutely never be any strain in the headset port.

A hook on the wall about 5' and the HMD lays perfectly.

A lot of people, including myself have done this. I had mixed results with the original Rift personally, but it seems to work a lot better with the S possibly because the cable is heavier.

You can get retractable cable hooks on amazon. Having a retractable system will allow you to crouch without pulling on the cable/hook

I use these . They were like 15 bucks and they work great.

Set it up so that the cable is over your head and you won’t hit it when you rotate around, the reels allow you to move a few feet in every direction without issue.

This combined with turn signal completely changed my Pavlov and In Death experiences; no more tripping over/keeping track of cables or having to use the joystick to turn around all the time!

Lots of mixed reviews about cable management systems. I have essentially unlimited ceiling height, and am eying a swivel. I’m imaginging running a ratchet strap up across the play space (tight) and then attaching the swivel to the strap at midpoint and adding a block to the cable so it doesn’t slide through the swivel too far.

You can get HDMI and USB 3.0 cable extensions that review well to work with WMR headsets, unless it's the overall weight you're worried about, in which case some hang it from the ceiling in retractable pulley system.

You can buy VR cable management/hangers which attach to the ceiling, so you'll not have to worry about it getting in the way

You start to develop a sort of sixth sense for where the cable is and how it's wrapped around your feet. It's much less intrusive than you might think. Reaching the edge of your play area is considerably more annoying.

There are also ways to suspend the cable. With a WMR headset, all you'd have to worry about is a single cable that's plugged directly into your PC. For added comfort, there are now front panels with the required USB 3.0 and HDMI ports.
