I'd recommend a 2mm lead holder. You can get dynamic shading just like a normal wooden pencil, but the pencil itself is always a consistent weight and length, and you can use whatever hardness leads you like. I am very fond of my Koh-i-noor Versatil 5201CL. It is all-metal and has an excellent lead pointer in the tip.
No experience with vintage Koh-i-Noors, but the newer ones I've tried I would recommend. For something sturdy but cheap, you might want to look at the all-metal 5201C (I hope you like mustard yellow): http://www.amazon.com/Koh-i-noor-5201CL-Versatil-Holder-Sharpener/dp/B0056AAFEU/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1414551927&sr=8-6
My only complaint with the Koh-i-Noor lead holders in my drawer is that they tend to come loose a bit more often than I'd like. But my sample's all drawn from a low-price range, no more than $12 or so.
For something that has a little more heft to it, have you looked at the Staedtler 925-25 series (priced at $20 in this link)? http://www.jetpens.com/Staedtler-Silver-Series-2-mm-Lead-Holder/pd/4704 Lead advances by a clutch-knock mechanism, so as long as that's not a deal-breaker I'd heartily recommend it.
Can I ask what specifically was underwhelming about the Kitaboshi? I was looking at one of theirs because I like the idea of a wood body, but suspected it might have a "cheap" feel to it. Bummer if that's the case.
My inspiration ?
There's a Guy I like a Lot, We both just got out of serious relationships and are just taking it slowly. So I drew this Flirty Picture to tell him how I felt :]
Good luck to everyone! Also, the item i'd love to get is this Super Fancy Pencil! So I may draw more of the inspiring things! :]
