Can't say I have any kanji books, sorry. If you're looking for a hirigana/katakana book this workbook is awesome. There's technically a decent amount of vocab in there to help you start using the writing systems but I mainly just focused on memorizing the kana. I suppose I should make an attempt at doing vocabulary more though.
As for spoken/grammar stuff, I used the "total" package Michael Thomas method. I /could/ go on to the next ones, but I only got it because it was $20 at half-price books. If you buy that package at a regular store it's like $120, which is wayyy overpriced imo. If you are just starting out and can find it cheap though I definitely recommend.
