I just picked up this refurbished laptop when I started and its been great for me. Its true a desktop would be best, but space is an issue in my studio. Also I dont have to miss camming if I have to travel. If you have any extra in the budget, I also grabbed a Logitech c920s Pro. The laptop was $280 and the cam was $70

If you're interested in light graphics design and light gaming I would personally recommend the Lenovo IdeaPad 320. Uses a quad core AMD A12 chip, with Radeon R7 graphics which will help greatly with gaming compared to integrated graphics. Only issue I see is a reasonable low res screen and a slow(ish) hard drive at only 5400rpm
