I would probably take a chance on this $69 Amazon 9 cell.

Definitely get an ssd and take the ram up to 16 gb ram and you will have a really nice upgrade. I recently got a new 9 cell that's working really well for me. Why not fix the hinge (ebay) and replace the battery? Total should come out to less than $100.
It wouldn't surprise me if they did go down in quality, I don't have anything to add there. I bought a T420 last year and hoping to keep it for as long as possible.
Lenovo has removed some of these from the website (boo!). But the key is that 55++ batteries will do fine. Did you mean to pull the amazon.ca website?
Read the comments though - it sounds like it may NOT be the Lenovo battery. The picture is confusing, as it shows a 25++ battery.

Once you get your battery, go through the Power Manager settings as well - you can tweak your battery settings quite extensively.
