Definitely agree the processor could be better, but overall for these specs this is a pretty good price.
Here's a similar laptop with a slightly better processor (quad-core) with a 950M for pretty much the same price : https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01I7WYHJ2/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A3LV9CG5SB4L8T
My best suggestion would be the the Lenovo Ideapad 700 for $540. It is probably your most powerful option with a i5-6300HQ processor, 8gb of ram and a 1TB HDD. It has a GTX 950M dedicated graphics card which is around the best you'll find in the price range, and should work just fine for games like GTA V, Overwatch, and Dark Souls with good FPS - more demanding games will have to be played at lower settings though. It also has a full 1080p IPS display, and a decent battery.

Probably the best in the price range. Listing is wishy washy with the specs, but if you look up the model number 80RU00FRUS, you'll find it has a NVIDIA 950M DDR3 and a 1920x1080 IPS display.

This would be my choice.
If you can push your budget a little then I would recommend this Lenovo Ideapad 700 because it comes with quad core i5-6300HQ which is one of the best in the market, 8 GB of ram for smooth multitasking, good quality 15.6 full HD IPS screen(better than the Acer mentioned twice before), with 1 Year Warranty, 1TB of HDD for storage, 950M GPU which is more than powerful enough your games (also slightly better than the 940MX on the acer) and it is within your budget.
You can take a look at the Lenovo IdeaPad 700 15:
i5 quad core enough + dedicated GPU. Will run the games you listed without any issues. Comes also with an IPS panel, though it's certainly not the most colour accurate one (would be also hard to find with your budget).
Acer Aspire E 15 E5-575G-57D4 7th gen i5 config $599
Specs
The Acer Aspire E 15 E5-575G-57D4 has a decent cpu and good amount of ram. It also includes an SSD as well as a dedicated graphics card that will increase performance.
If you increase your budget to $650, you could get the Lenovo Ideapad 700-15ISK laptop $624
Specs
No backlit keyboard on this one, and no SSD (using a 1TB HDD instead). It does however, include a better quad core cpu and faster gpu for running necessary programs as well as a better screen (IPS), for larger viewing angles.
Or you could get the HP Pavilion 15 Laptop $649
Specs
Which includes the best cpu and gpu of the three. NB: Please be aware that this is the minimum configuration for this laptop; you can customize before buying eg. adding an SSD, more RAM, etc.
I lost focus for a while... I actually wanted to recommend this to you. It has the same powerful quad core processor, 8 GB RAM and the GTX 950 graphics card, but doesn't have an SSD ( this is something you can add later on though)... It is withing your budget range and is much more powerful than the Acer 15.

get this if you can. It is $566 with better processor and graphic card than all these.
So how does the i5 Dell stack up to the Lenovo IdeaPad 700-15isk? They seem to have similar specs, are the advantages of the Dell worth the extra ~150?
Here's a link to the IdeaPad: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01I7WYHJ2/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1478370627&sr=8-1&pi=SY200_QL40&keywords=lenovo+ideapad+700-15isk&dpPl=1&dpID=4133Wl4%2BoGL&ref=plSrch
For the price you aren't going to find anything with better performance. It's basically the cheapest gaming laptop you can really get so I understand the concern.
There's this for a little more but if you're on a strict budget you aren't going to do any better than that acer. Not really a whole lot of options at that price.
Hi! I have a question, out of these two laptops which would you recommend: Lenovo Ideapad 700-15ISK Intel Core i5-6300HQ 2.3GHz 8GB RAM 1TB HDD Win 10 Home ( https://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-Ideapad-700-15ISK-i5-6300HQ-2-3GHz/dp/B01I7WYHJ2/ ) or Acer Aspire E 15 E5-575G-53VG Laptop, 15.6 Full HD (Intel Core i5, NVIDIA 940MX, 8GB DDR4, 256GB SSD, Windows 10) ( https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01DT4A2R4/ref=ask_ql_qh_dp_hza ) Thank you!
Well, i think there are a few routes you can take. I have the build i was talking about that would be a capable gaming machine and decent streaming one, and at the very least a decent laptop for its pricing. Nothing super special, but capable.
Here is the PC part list: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/DJyGhq
Here is the laptop: https://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-Ideapad-700-15ISK-i5-6300HQ-2-3GHz/dp/B01I7WYHJ2?th=1
The price may not quite be what you wanted. But honestly it isnt the worst deal, if you want good without overkill and the best of both worlds for your a bit over your budget... here you go! Do keep in mind that the build is including mouse and keyboard and monitor. That being said, if you dont need that stuff just remove that stuff from the build in your own edit of it. It may be a bit over budget, but for the price youre really getting some good bang for your buck.
So with all that in mind, there is always the gaming laptop. There is the full on mid tower gaming machine, or there is the in between of a decently priced for the specs laptop and a pretty decent desktop for the price. Anyway, good luck! (for the third time :P)
Dont be afraid of maintaining this discussion with me, as long as this horrible Mexico wifi allows me to. Id love to keep chatting about this whole computer budgeting.
She doesn't work from home and doesn't need to edit and use ArcGIS. She rarely uses it at home since she does the work at her office location. She uses her laptop 95% for browsing and gaming (she is on her laptop at least 2 hours a day). Is there another suggestion or would this still be your suggestion after saying these details?
This seems a bit pricey (found the link below, which i think is the one you recommended)
