1. A thin and portable laptop is more expensive than a chunky one. And the thinner it is, the more inconsistent the fps. That is because they lack proper cooling/ventilation so both the cpu and gpu are more prone to overheating and throttling down. You can't get anything lighter than around 5lbs and expect it to play games well.

For under $1000, this Acer Aspire VX15 would be a good option at $900. It's a good value options with good build quality, 15.6" 1080p IPS display, and a GTX 1050Ti dGPU. Inside, it has an Intel quad core i5-7500HQ processor, 16gb of ram, a 256gb SSD, and that GTX 1050 TI dGPU which will be more than enough to play the games you described. It weighs 5.5 lbs and gets an advertised 6 hour battery life.

Another very similar laptop you could look into would be the Lenovo Legion Y520 going for $850 with similar specs.

Looking at your budget you will have no trouble finding a very good laptop on the market. I would advise you to pick these laptops up online on either their respecive retail websites, amazon.com, or newegg.com if you want to get the better deal. It has a great battery, relatively light, can be configured with a gtx 1050, and doesn't look like a gaming laptop with the loud colors.

The build quality is better than the dell's and its quite slightly lighter too.
The specs are pretty much the same, it has a 256 GB PCIe SSD so you would have to add the HDD
There are versions with a HDD such as this and a certified refurbished one, which could be overkill since its 2 TB and also has an i7 instead of an i5
Also as a little bonus, it comes with Dolby Atmos speakers.

Though I would recommend waiting a little bit because Intel is releasing their new Coffee Lake Gen 8 CPUs and these machines will be discontinued soon and replaced with the more powerful machines with the Gen 8 CPUs.

I recommend to check Dell Inspiron 15-7567. It's a budget gaming system that runs current games smoothly, it has efficient cooling system and good battery life. The standard TN display is known to be lackluster, but fi you get the IPS version you will be fine.
The Lenovo Legion Y520 might be also a good option, it offers strong performance for its price, stylish design and a nice IPS display, but the battery life is mediocre.

Also, the Acer Aspire VX 15 recommended by shopineer is a good option.

In your opinion, how does this one Lenovo Legion Y520 fare agaisnt those two you pointed out?

Seems that the tradeoff is between the I7 CPU and the extra slimness/portability. GPU on the lenovo is 4Gb instead of 2Gb tho. Not sure about battery life

The Dell Inspiron 7560 might also be good. I know they're gaming laptops and you might not play games but a quad core CPU and dedicated GPU are definitely helpful if you need to run any intensive programs. You should also check out r/hardwareswap if you don't mind buying used, r/buildapcsales and r/laptopdeals for sales, and r/suggestalaptop for more ideas. The Thinkpad option isn't bad neither, and there's r/thinkpad for that.

Dell Inspiron 7567 has a much better GTX 1050 Ti GPU (if you don't mind touch) but I'd only choose it if you can go the extra $30+tax to get the IPS screen.

Here and here. For reference, I have a 2016 Razer Blade w/ a GTX 980M, i7-6700HQ, and 16 GB of RAM. I can barely scratch anywhere past 50 FPS with medium-high settings. Or, if you think you could do it, find a briefcase-sized computer case and cram some better components in it, find a small screen that supports HDMI, and carry that around with you. It's obviously gonna be kind of chunky, but you'd be carrying around a desktop-grade PC with you. I saw that in this video at around the 15:55 mark, there's a tiny desktop PC shown that's supposedly around $800 new and can "blow consoles out of the water."

idk, 600$ and gaming and portability is a bit difficult. The best I can do is this MSI. I have personally had a bad experience with MSI before. Their build quality is usually lacking. And this model seems to be chunky and seems hefty. But it has the specs. It will do what you want it to do. I just don't think it would be able to handle constantly being carried around.

If you can somehow scrape some more money, this Lenovo is a good option. Fast storage, capable in gaming, and not too big. Heard good things about it.
