I would recommend this Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E560 because ThinkPads are known for their great battery life, amazing build quality and very good keyboards, and it comes with the specs you need, a dual core i7 like you asked for, a 16GB of ram for smooth multi tasking, good SSD storage for faster booting and and overall performance, and it is just within budget.

I would get the Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E560 or if you don't want to spend so close to the $1000, the Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E560 would be a brilliant option as well. The both have a great performance level, outstanding build quality, solid mechanical feel keyboards and of course- very good battery lives.

When I think of build quality, Lenovo Thinkpads are the best in your price range. Something like this Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E560, would do a very decent job in handling your statistical analysis and it's i7 processor, 16 GB RAM and AMD Radeon R7 M370 Graphics will do a good enough job in running Overwatch and other light games. What really stands out about this laptop is it's wonderful build quality -- from it's tough case to it's , solid crunchy keyboard. It also has a great battery life and its simple appearance makes it perfect for an office.

Thanks for your recommendation. The Lenovo looks perfect! I'll send him the link and see what he says. Do you think this one:

https://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-ThinkPad-1920x1080-i7-6500U-Computer/dp/B019HU8DSE/ref=sr_1_7?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1467333264&sr=1-7&keywords=thinkpad+16+gb+ram+i7

would be worth the extra money for the i7 and the 1080p screen?
