Ahhhhhh... I know exactly the sort of brick that laptop is.

Something cheap and old like a: Link.

Or I could kill my back yet boost my internal ego by miles with a T530 or something.

I'll probably upgrade the fuck out of it like I do with every other electronic i get my hand on.

Thank you very much for your advice.

Edit: Seems like i'm gonna buy a used T530 (since they stopped making these). Drop another 250 dollars on it with upgrades, and probably cry from both back pain and joy. For only 550 in total.

Here’s a thinkpad t440 for $248.

Get this:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B073WVRDJT

And this:

There. Now you have a 1080p within budget.

Also I forgot to mention, I am okay with ebay/refurbished

this is what I am looking at currently

I think your best option would be a used Thinkpad, there are no good devices in this range that are 14" or less.

Something like the Lenovo Thinkpad T440 would be extremely durable.

I would get the following ThinkPad T440 for $200. It has an i5-4300u, Intel HD 4400 graphics core, 8GB of RAM, 500GB hard drive and 1366x768 screen.

I have an old Dell Latitude 3540 with the i5-4200u and Intel HD 4400 that I still use from time to time. I even use it to play Fallout 3 (2008) and Fallout New Vegas (2010) at 1080p with medium settings. It can handle Skyrim as well when I set that game up on a friend's laptop with an i5-4210u and Intel HD 4400... but the resolution had to be lowered to 1600x900 and some minor graphic tweaks to get pretty decent performance.

I really would not look at anything prior to the 4th generation Intel Core i3-4xxx or Core i5-4xxx series with the Intel HD 4400 graphics core. I have an even older Lenovo Ideapad Y470 with a 2nd gen Intel Core i5-2410m, Intel HD 3000 graphics core, dedicated nVidia GT 550m and a 1366x768 screen. I decided to test the Intel HD 3000 and Fallout 3 did not run well without a lot of graphic tweaks to the game, Mass Effect 1 (2007) was playable but did not run very well. Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines (2004) did run pretty well. I recall seeing someone play the Sims 3 (2009) using the Intel HD 3000 and looked playable to me.

If they are readily available then sure. I have little patience for scouring e-bay for second hand computers though.

Edit: it looks like amazon has refurbed thinkpads for super cheap. does the thinkpad below look like a good contender to play around with Pop!_OS and other distros?
