IMO, I don't think it's a very good deal because:

  • It doesn't look it has any HDMI ports.
  • It looks like it's big, heavy and will take up space
  • They haven't made any of these in around six years and the bulb/lamp is $240 and I'm assuming we don't know many hours are left on the projector out of 3,000 hours projector central rates it at.
  • The Projector won't show HD quality video and the contrast ratio is only 1000:1

If you're not familiar with projectors, 90% of projectors are bulb based. So you buy the projector and run it until you have to replace the bulb, this can be roughly anywhere from 3,500 to 7,000 hours before you need to replace the bulb. Some bulbs cost more than others depending on the projector ($79-$350 from what I've seen personally).

There are LED projectors out there that don't need bulbs and usually have a lifespan of 20k to 30k hours. They're not as bright as bulb based projectors and the majority of them are 480p or 720p with the exception (that I know of) being the 1080p LG PF1500 which is $900.

At $300, you're probably going to go used or have to save up more. If I had to suggest anything then I would probably suggest a refurbished LED projector, the LG PH300 (Amazon)or eBay. They're $350-$400 new.

The LG PH300 is IMO, pretty fantastic for what you get:

  • 720p HD
  • A screen size of up to 100" depending on how far it is from the screen, check out this tool.
  • you don't have to worry about replacing bulbs or have the bulbs 'dim' the picture. The projector is rated for 30,000 hours (which is like 8 hours a day for 10 years).
  • Small and light enough to take anywhere and has a battery that lasts 2.5 hours.
  • 100,000:1 contrast ratio.
  • The only downsides IMO, are that the sound on it isn't very good (surprised it has any at all) and that it doesn't push out that much light and is best used in lower light or no light conditions.

Hope I helped, feel free to ask questions. I've only owned a cheap $100 chinese LED projector to get a taste of projectors and while it was awful, like 480p, hardly any contrast, washed out colors, had to be completely dark to see anything kind of bad, it still put up a 85" screen on the wall and the sheer size of it definitely had that 'Wow!' factor even though the projector was shit. I ended up returning it because I wanted to both save up and do more research. I'm relatively new to the projector world but I do research and read here in /r/projectors every day. :)

i got a LG LED projector a few years back, and i'm super pleased with it.

i would recommend against a short throw projector. they seem to always be fairly distorted, no matter what.

be aware that your projector will put out some noise. i keep mine on low / medium brightness and it has an audible fan noise.

your projector will dictate the mounting location. you need to pick where your screen will be and then after you get your projector you'll find out that it wants to be a foot or three further or closer than you were originally thinking. at least for the one i got, there was only a few feet worth of size adjustment available by the zoom dial.

you can easily mount LED projectors to the ceiling. i think mine weighs like 2lbs? i got a nice tripod head for good tilt adjustment, and bolted it to the ceiling with a fat toggle bolt. cable management to get the HDMI over to the projector was more of a PITA than getting the projector up there.
