We've been using these

since our little guy was 1.5. He seems to understand that he'll only hear his movie with the headphones on, but we let him decide if he wants to wear them or not (if he doesn't, he just wanted the movie without audio).

We started using them before the trip so it wasn't completely foreign to him.

Edited to add that we also have a bunch of little games and animated books on the ipad, and he did great. He was not really able to watch movies on the seatback tv - they don't angle down far enough, so from his vantage point they were just black.

I really like these.

The features include:

Noise limiting, they won't go loud enough to damage hearing.

The cord is inserted into the headphones and the radio, so if they're pulled the cord will just pop out and not break or yank your kid.

There is a jack in each "ear" so that you can hook a SECOND pair of headphones to the set and the kids can share the same audio.

I bought 2 for a road trip to Branson. My (then) 5 year old and (then) 2 year old loved them, we also purchased a portable DVD player for like $50 from Walmart and they were able to watch and we didn't have to hear the cartoons for 4 hours. :)

I have these and they work great as far as having a maximum volume.

We fly with our two year old across the country about twice a year , so we purchased these for her so that she's able to watch movies during the flight.

they're available in different colors and they're pretty affordable. They fit her head great and you can fold them in half and they even come with their own travel bag

Should also note that they come with a fabric cord so the wire doesn't tangle easily, And more importantly they're padded on the sides and top of the head so discomfort will not be an issue during wear! 5/5 would recommend

We have these ones, I think they came recommended from Lucie’s List. They limit volume and have an extra port so you could plug your headphones into them.

I’ll be totally honest though, at 20 months and 24 months my son didn’t care for them. We just had two 9 hour flights and he just watched the Kindle without sound. Occasionally he wanted to listen to music and I just held my phone next to his ear in the car seat with the speaker level low and it worked out. I don’t regret having the headphones on hand, but we definitely could’ve traveled without them and nothing would’ve changed, haha.

We bought some of the weekly pill organizers. Filled each little box with a different snack (raisins, banana chips, peanuts etc.) you'll need snacks and this kept them entertained a bit.

We got headphones for ours at 1yr old. They kept them on surprisingly well. Get some with sharing ports if you plan on more kids later. https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B00Q3I690I/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_Pw9CDbNC9QGQB

Couple of bleach wipes in a baggy so you can wipe down the saet before they lock the tray table.

Also be sure you have extra clothes for you, not just him.
