You wont see your rating climb much til you hit that 500 ratings mark which can take 1,000 to 1,500 rides. You need loads of 5 stars to drown out the 4-3-2-1s and yes the 1s hurt A LOT specially when you only have 100-200 total ratings.
Like others said just greet and say your farewells, only engage in convo if the PAX leads. BIG NO to water and snacks, I do have water on hand for pukers to wash their mouths out after (I catch most pukers with my vomit bags and get them outside to finish after stopping the car).
Pick up some chargers, these help a lot . https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0719JWVHT Its long enough to tie around your passenger headrest and dangle to cord at their knee level or lay inside the pocket behind passenger seat if you have that, they will find it and plug in always. i say pick up "some" as they tend to break or wear out for me every 3-4 months.
You will most always know a 1 star is coming so hit them with one as well even if they dont. They touch your radio or AC without asking = instant smack and 1 star (I've only had to do this twice out of 3k rides).
