You should be using micron wheel filters, especially since you sound like you could easily afford and acquire them.

Here's one of the better ones out there, and in particular are individually packaged and sterilized, which does matter to an extent. If you have disposable income, I'd go with these bad boys. Make sure they're compatible with the needles you use (higher gauge number the better...use 27 gauge or higher, like ~29-31 gauge is arguable the best for your health and still thick "enough" not to clog often, especially when using micron filters).

If you're somewhat on a budget, using something like the one linked below (also 0.22ug micron filter, but not sterilized and individually package) can bring the cost down from ~$1-1.50 per filter to more like ~$0.50-0.70 per filter. IMO, don't bother buying sterilized microns IF they're not individually packaged, unless the price isn't that much more.

Personally, I wouldn't use a 0.22ug micron filter that's cheaper than ~$0.70 each, unless it's for non-injection purposes, or unless it has loads of positive reviews. I don't IV, but if I did I'd recognize that just ~$0.50-1 per dose/shot (or possibly even cheaper, as you can filter a bit more than just one "dose" depending on the total quantity and how impure it is, as long as you filter it all at once).

If someone is on a bare minimum budget, use at least a 0.45ug micron filter, or at worst a sterifilt (cheaper than microns, filters out ~99% of all particles >5ug, and 90% of all particles <5ug). That's not a fine enough filter to filter out the vast majority of bacteria, but it's WAY better than using cotton.

Cotton only filters out particles as "small" as ~40-80ug in size, and even when it does, it's not a "filter" with a universal pore size. That means that particles larger than ~100ug still get through, even if it's "only" ~1-20% of all particles that size.
