Liquid Swords is my favorite Wu-Tang solo album, despite the fact that GZA, as talented as an emcee as he is, is not my favorite Wu-Tang member. From the Shogun Assassin intro to Killah Priest's superb closer, B.I.B.L.E., this album is brilliantly conceived and executed. RZA crafts an ominous atmosphere throughout - Liquid Swords is claustrophobic and relentless in its darkness (it's definitely one of the most cohesive albums in rap music history). GZA himself gives a once in a lifetime performance: his dense lyrics and unique concepts are deservedly legendary in the history of rap music. He isn't committing acts of lyrical gymnastics for their own sake, however. GZA paints beautiful and ugly pictures of street life in the "Cold World"; his performance is a unique hybrid of style and substance.
RZA, GZA, and Killah Priest aren't the only ones who turned in masterpieces on this album. Method Man ("Shadowboxin'" in particular), Inspectah Deck, Ghostface Killah, and other Wu-Tang members all demonstrate incredible skill on Liquid Swords. This may be the best album the Wu-Tang ever created. Anyone who hasn't heard this album owes it to themselves to PURCHASE a copy, put it on, and let it play all the way through. There really are too many classic tracks on this album for me to list. Liquid Swords also makes a wonderful companion piece to Raekwon's Only Built 4 Cuban Linx (with its The Killer theme).

Don't get Liquid Swords on vinyl. Wu-Tang vinyl has traditionally sounded awful and Liquid Swords has a snazzy chess set.
Get Sir Lucious Left Foot if you can, the sleeve is amazing.
