I had that thought. I bought this before I got the Marantz. Really handy, any iOS or Android device can become your remote. https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Harmony-Companion-Control-Entertainment/dp/B00N3RFC4G/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1484776299&sr=8-2&keywords=logitech+harmony+hub

I got the Home Companion/Home Control used like new for around $90 or so through this Amazon 3rd party seller. Came like it was brand new and unopened and I had it all set up with the hub, mobile app and IR sensor in less than 45 minutes. It controls up to 8 devices and has some limited home control options that I don't use. The hub is the biggest part and allows IP control and integrated use of their mobile app. I linked to Outlet Digital directly as they were my seller but I have no connection to them whatsoever. Just had a good experience ordering from them is all. I don't like paying retail if I can help it.😉

The one I ordered came in black( they also offer white but fingerprints and food😱) and it's very slim as it uses a watch battery for power ( replace every year or 2) and there's no backlight but I memorized the button positions in a few days and it became second nature after a week or 2 in the dark. It's the only remote I use now so I picked up the whole button layout through sheer repetition.

Harmony Companion. Best universal I've owned. I've been using it for 4 years now with no issues.

Don't get another 650; those button issues are known and will reoccur. It happened to two 650s I had before getting the harmony companion set.

I’m a big fan of the Logitech Harmony Companion. Beyond being able to integrate with tons of other smart devices, the remote just feels great.

You have 3 options.

First is just the hub with no physical remote. There’s a smartphone app that has to be used to control everything.

Harmony Home Hub https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00N3RFC4Q.

Second is the hub with what they call a “simple remote”. The simple remote is a physical remote that can control up to 8 devices and 6 activities. This is the version I use and highly recommend. The remote actually has a very good build quality and I like it better than the fancy remote because it’s battery lasts forever and it’s much more durable so not a big deal if my kid drops it.

Harmony Companion Remote https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00N3RFC4G.

This last one comes with the hub and the high end elite remote. The elite remote can control more devices and activities than the simple remote but most people won’t need it. It also has a customizable touch screen that you can program to do whatever you want.

Logitech Harmony Elite Remote Control, Hub & App https://www.amazon.com/dp/B014PDFP9S

No matter which of those 3 options you get it’s the exact same hub and the smart phone app works for all of them. The physical remote is the only difference.

I think you could if you used IFTTT integration with Google Assistant and a Harmony Companion.

I think mainly you need Product with Harmony Hub included. I have Harmony home control which includes Remote and Hub.

I have one of the cheap remotes and it came with the hub unless we're talking about two different things. This is what I have:

I bought this and use it to control my UN65H7100, Denon AVR, Comcast X1, Wii U, Xbox One and my philips hue lights. It's a very simple remote and I hardly ever use the phone to do anything except set up all my activities.

u/electric_paint · 2 pointsr/homeautomation

The only difference between this version and the newer one is the added buttons on the remote to control lights/switches. The hubs themselves are completely identical once you update it via the app. I own gen1 and it works with Alexa and Smart Home stuff.

This would be the gen2 combo:

I'm very happy with the Harmony Hub and Companion Remote on my Sony XBR-55x700D. I'm not sure if it's using BT or WiFi since I've got a BT dongle plugged into one of the USB ports for a keyboard. I'm not using IR. The companion remote talks to the Hub by BT and the Hub sends all the commands over BT or WiFi (it also has an optional IR emitter that I'm not using).

It's much better than the Sony Remote and I can control my TiVo, Roku, Sony BluRay, and Vizio soundbar. Finally just one remote to rule them all!

u/memebuster · 2 pointsr/amazonecho

Yes, you would. I recommend you get the hub + remote anyhow, it's just so useful.

you want the hub primarily for the wifi capabilities so it works with Smartthings or your other wifi devices that you may use. The hub also lets you connect it with alexa so you can turn on activities, change channels, volume, etc. As you mentioned, it does also allow control for stuff in cabinets

/u/glennbarosen get this if you want home control buttons on the remote

or get this if you dont care for home control on your remote. you can still have the activities communicate with your smart home devices (smart bulbs, smart plugs, etc). I use this one and it works great with my smart home stuff

Either choice will let you control your TV, sound system, apple tv, ps4 (ps4 only after it was powered on by controller)

u/MrGriffin12 · 2 pointsr/amazonecho

I'm doing what you described with the Harmony Home Control (Amazon link) and IFTTT.

What you do is setup the Harmony device with "Activities." So for example I have one Activity called "Watch AppleTV" that turns on the ATV, turns on the receiver and switches it to HDMI3 out, then turns on the TV and switches it to input1.

Then you login to IFTTT and add your Harmony and Amazon Echo accounts to IFTTT. Then you make a two IFTTT recipes for each activity. So I made an activity that turns on Watch AppleTV and another that turns off Watch AppleTV. You run these from the echo by saying "Alexa trigger run on the AppleTV." You need to say trigger to the Echo knows to send it to IFTTT. After about two seconds the command runs from the Harmony and you are all set.

The key is you need to make a Harmony activity on the Harmony for everything you want. Then those activities show in the dropdown list for Hamony on IFTTT.

The only one I'm not sure about is your up/down volume idea. I think you could make a Harmony activity for recover volume up then an IFTTT trigger to match. Then another activity and trigger for receiver volume down. I just use the Harmony remote for volume.

u/Sidekicknicholas · 2 pointsr/hometheater

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Comcast DOES in fact offer RF remotes ... call to see if you can get one, that solves your problem and is probably the cheapest option.

Otherwise .....
Harmony Hub + remote. You put all your gear in another room / out of sight (like you have). The hub is placed near the devices in another room and runs off your WIFI... there is a very easy to use software package to setup the remote. From there its just like using a normal remote but all your stuff is out of sight.

I currently use it to control my basement bar / theater setup. I have my receiver, direct tv box, fire tv, ps3 all in another room and the remote controls everything flawlessly. I highly recommend it. You can also control from a tablet / phone, but I prefer the remote. https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Harmony-Companion-Control-Entertainment/dp/B00N3RFC4G

u/svideo · 2 pointsr/Roku

You probably have a Harmony Hub based remote which has been available down to around $100 if you dig for it. That line has been discontinued and replaced with a nearly-identical line of Harmony Home Control devices. The new Harmony Home Control line hasn't been discounted anywhere that I am aware of, outside of a trade-in deal from Best Buy.

The Home Control series adds the ability to interface with some HA devices like Nest and SmartThings. They have promised that an upgrade for existing Harmony Hub users will give them these capabilities sometime "early [this] year" (it was "late [last] year" at one point, so don't hold your breath). It has also been noted that this will not be a free upgrade.

u/guyHalestorm · 2 pointsr/htpc

The ultimate remote. Literally.

I bought one of these when I moved in with my now wife a few years ago. She didn't like my collection of remotes and remote keyboard, she just wanted to be able to turn on Bravo. Best thing I ever did. Automating activities makes turning things on/off correctly a snap. For a keyboard you can get one of these. Whatever you turn on that accepts a bluetooth keyboard - PC, PS4, Fire TV, whatever - the keyboard is automatically connected to it. I wouldn't try playing Quake on it, but it works great for web browsing. Battery in the remote dies? No problem, open up the Harmony app on a phone or tablet and work it that way while the remote charges.

I've since set up cheaper Harmony Companions to control the bedroom TVs, since I use Xbox 360s as media center extenders for live TV. My daughter has some Philips smart bulbs and it controls them as well. Overall I've come to love Harmony Hub based products, they just work.

u/thatstheways · 2 pointsr/logitechharmony

OK, I get that - there are a lot of options that, frankly, I don’t really understand what they do. I think I have a relatively older iteration of the remote. Essentially, what you need is the Hub and a remote. The Hub accepts all of the inputs from your harmony remote (or the app on your smart phone) and then sends that signal out to the corresponding device whether that be via an IR signal or a signal over Wi-Fi. They seem to have a number of kinda crazy remotes now with touch screens etc. but I think that’s kind of ridiculous and overkill. I’ve had the simplest version of the remote for years and never felt limited.

I’d just get this:

https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Harmony-Companion-Control-Entertainment/dp/B00N3RFC4G?keywords=Harmony&qid=1540667752&sr=8-2&ref=sr_1_2

If you’ve got a basic level of technical proficiency, the app makes it very easy to add all of your devices and then set up an activity. The main one I use right now is my “Watch Apple TV” activity which , with one click on the remote, turns on my Apple TV, turns on my TV, sets it to HDMI 4, turns on my receiver, sets the receiver to the right input, and then controls Apple TV for most things and volume on the receiver. You can then go in and customize the remote buttons to do things that aren’t the “default” setting, like the colored buttons on the remote I use to switch between stereo and surround inputs.

If you have Alexa, you can just tell Alexa, “Watch Apple TV,” which is also ridiculous but pretty cool.

u/WeissIchWeiss · 2 pointsr/organization

I bought one of these and it might be the best investment ever. Totally worth it. It swallowed up all of my remotes, now controls my lights and it works with my Echo/Alexa. Thank me later.

I think the one you are seeing on sale is the older one. Take a closer look at the controls on the remote and you'll notice the newer one seems to be more smart home oriented. Also check out Logitech's website and you'll notice that they no longer sell the one you're looking at.

Older one

Newer one

As /u/akellar said below, I think the hub is the same. From what I've heard the more premium versions of harmony can control up to 15 devices instead of 8. I don't know if this is true and if it is, not sure how it's restricted.

If you can hold out for a while, you should be able to pick it up for around $100CAD. A little steep still, but better than $180. I got mine for $99.99 CAD at BestBuy during their Boxing Week sale at the end of last year.

It's been down under $100 CAD on Amazon too, although it looks like $130 CAD is the more typical sale price: https://ca.camelcamelcamel.com/Logitech-Harmony-Companion-Entertainment-915-000239/product/B00N3RFC4G

The Harmony home...

My local costco had a really good deal on a nicer harmony remote (like $169), but I needed to be able to control it in a "closed cabinet" environment...

u/geekofweek · 1 pointr/homeautomation

I had this debate last week between just the Harmony Hub or the Harmony Elite + hub, ended up getting the Harmony Companion that comes with the hub and a non touch screen remote. I really didn't want to use my phone to control everything, but also didn't really need a touch screen remote. It wasn't much more to get the companion and the remote is fairly decent. I still have to keep my AppleTV 4th gen remote around since it doesn't do voice control or video scrubbing. For the most part I only use the Harmony remote.

Works great

u/aridiz · 1 pointr/kodi

It depends on the size of your house, but if you're talking about a rack, it sounds kind of big...

When you say you want to stream to 2-3 tv's at the same time, do you mean the exact same content, sync'd up at the same time? That's what I wanted to do... When I'm doing spring cleaning, or laundry, going from room to room to room or throwing a party, I want to hear the same pandora song, or have the same show on all the same time, and not feel a shift when I change rooms.

The same time was penultimate... so Personally, I went low tech...

When I moved in, I ran 3 cat5 wires to every room... one for network, the other 2, I ran passive HDMI over cat5 (adapters at less than $20 each), and I put an HDMI splitter ($60) in the main distribution point of the house... That means every TV in the house has the ability to get driven by the same device, at the same time, whether it's My Chromecast, my Amazon Fire, or my cable box. Not having to pay for 4 cable boxes, one for each extra room, saves me 40 bucks a month on my cable bill alone for right now.

I control all the devices through wifi... Amazon Fire has an App, Chromecast... obviously... and cable and the switcher, I control through a WiFi harmony app, it cost me about 100 bucks:
http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Harmony-Home-Control-Devices/dp/B00N3RFC4G
I have never used the remote, and frankly, i don't even use the macros much, it has a feature for direct device control, so you switch to that, and switch to the device you want... and off you go.

u/joebobber · 1 pointr/hometheater

I have the exact same TV and Soundbar as you!

And the same problem. I ended up buying a Harmony remote with Hub: https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Harmony-Companion-Control-Entertainment/dp/B00N3RFC4G/ref=sr_1_4?s=aht&ie=UTF8&qid=1482517395&sr=1-4&keywords=harmony+hub

Everything now works great.

u/FranknStein7 · 1 pointr/hometheater

You will feel liberated after giving up on HDMI-CEC. It was great for me at first until I added an Apple TV 4K to my setup, and then it became a nightmare. My receiver would literally just jump back and forth between my Shield and Apple TV every 5 seconds. I strongly recommend one of these: https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Harmony-Companion-Control-Entertainment/dp/B00N3RFC4G/ref=sr_1_7?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1520029096&sr=1-7&keywords=logitech+hub+harmony. The initial setup is occasionally tricky, but once setup it's a dream.

u/CaptinStabN · 1 pointr/smarthome

Here's the one I have (I opted to get the remote so I could idiot proof things for my family): https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00N3RFC4G

u/grudolf · 1 pointr/AndroidTV

Harmony Companion (US / [EU] (https://www.amazon.de/Logitech-2015-Harmony-Companion-Fernbedienung-Schwarz/dp/B014GXQ3S4/)) should be fine, check the Shield setup guide. You can program 6 most used activities to remote buttons (3 + 3 with longpress) with others available in mobile app which is also used for setup and configuration. The hub supports max. 8 devices which should be enough for most use cases.

Minuses:

  • smart home (=orange) buttons can't be remapped to regular activities/devices
  • buttons aren't backlit
u/ron2016 · 1 pointr/nvidiashield

Thank you. I was considering this setup https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Harmony-Companion-Control-Entertainment/dp/B00N3RFC4G/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=harmony&qid=1574600307&sr=8-2 (minus alexa) but, given how expensive the Shield is, don't want to fork out the extra bucks. Not even 100% sure this will work with the setup: TV (LG non smart), receiver (for when not using the Shield), and Shield that I'll end up with.

u/hoopsdavis · 1 pointr/AndroidTV

I couldn't deal with the Shield TV remote, too sensitive and not enough options. I went with the (Logitech Harmony Companion All in One Remote Control)

The Harmony Companion has been a life changer. It's reliably responsive and is remarkably comfortable to hold. It's a significant price jump from the remotes in the review, but I wholeheartedly recommend it if you have other boxes and smart lights.

  1. Get a Harmony Hub + remote like this
  2. In the Harmony app, add your devices (TV, Roku, etc).
  3. In the Harmony app, create activities for "watch plex", "watch youtube". Basically they turn on the tv, set the input to roku (hdmi2 or whatever), then tell the roku to start a specific roku channel.
  4. In the Smartthings app, add your Harmony hub. It will find the "watch plex" and "watch youtube" activities.
  5. In the Google Home app, add your Smartthings controller. Now Google Home knows about those activities also.

So I'll say "hey google start plex" and it will reply "ok starting the watch plex" (yeah, bad grammar) and then do the right thing. I still use the roku (or harmony) remote for choosing shows, pausing/forwading, etc. But it's handy to be able to use Google Home voice commands to start/stop things.
u/IXI_Fans · 1 pointr/ShieldAndroidTV

I have the Harmony Hub/Smart Home. It is the boring looking remote, but don't let it's loks fool you, it is one of the most powerful. You can also use your smart-phone too, which is nice if the remote is JUUUUUUSSST out of reach. :)

Check out this one if you have smart lights/plugs.

And this one if you want the same one with no home control buttons.

Once you get it set up (it could take an hour+ if you arent familiar with the software) it is amazing!

A DIY option would be an IR receiver on the remote paired up to an RF module of some kind, then another RF module at the TV with an IR transmitter

Yes but Harmony Home Control comes with a IR receiver. It also includes a PC/Mac app for you to setup all your controls. You set them up through the computer app and it sends all the commands to the receiver.

Does your TV have optical or coaxial output, and your sound bar have the same input? Take a look and your TV may be able to control the sound bar as it's primary sound.

I also agree with u/kberson I use the Harmony Hub because it allows me to use my voice to control all my media devices. Here's the sub reddit r/logitechharmony

u/SirEDCaLot · 1 pointr/homeautomation

Quick followup question- why not just get something like a Logitech Harmony? Why does physically turning off the power to the TV need to be a thing? With that device you could control everything from your phone and also from the remote. Why turn off the power at all?

u/iamalwaysfreezing · 1 pointr/breakingmom

Here you go!. My favorite thing is that I've set up a favorite to the local sports channel, so all I have to say is "Alexa, turn on the Astros", and boom, Baseball!!

u/paurac · 1 pointr/SmartThings

Lights: I prefer switches over smart bulbs. I have a lot of the GE toggle and dimmer switches.

Entertainment: Logitech Harmony remote with the hub integrates well. If their setup is simple, the Companion is decent. If it is more complicated you might want something with a screen like the Elite

Security: I think Ring is more open, Google seems to be locking nest down so it doesn't integrate with other things as well.

Additional things: Look into getting a fire tablet and running Action Tiles. I like it to see the status of everything and know what is on/off at a glance. Thermostat, Smart locks, garage door opener, sensors on other doors/windows are other things that can be added in the future.

u/thecolbra · 1 pointr/DIY

[The hubs come with a remote though?] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00N3RFC4G/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_.HNmDb0MJT3DE) and I can control my roku and smart lights with it as well

Gotcha, well you can still get the basic hub+remote for $135 it looks. I have this, but never use the remote really, cause everything is exposed as switches to my other systems.

There's plenty you can do if you know how to code, but if you aren't writing plugins for HASS you can get away with just learning some basic YAML pretty much, and there's tons of useful resources on the website.

I use this sensor for a lot of things, including temp/humidity. It's also got a light sensor, if that would be in any way helpful there as well. It shows up in HASS with the assortment of sensors that can then be tied to whatever automations and such.
