Replace your other remote with one that will sync with your Harmony hub.
yes, but its a full keyboard.

also, the keyboard doesnt send the IR signals, the included smart hub ($99 independently) does. it has an RF link to the smart hub.
the smart hub also allows you to use a tablet/phone or one of their accessory remotes

the new harmony line relies on the smart hub to do all the IR signals, and the accessory keyboard/remotes/ or tablet/phone only control the smart hub.
I was using a Logitech Harmony Hub and Companion Remote on my old 700D. It uses all three (as needed). IR, BT, and WiFi.
When I got my A9G, I didn't even have to reprogram anything. I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work on the A8F.
Here's the remote. It's for their new harmony hub devices but they've accidentally gotten this one right. You pair the hub with bluetooth and use a program called ps3blumote to map button presses to keyboard commands. A little hands on for the setup but mine is working great.
What about getting an RF remote for your receiver. It is pretty low tech but it would easily let her lower the volume to a level she can sleep with from her room.
The harmony expansion remote may go through walls.

Another option could be Tasker. Like during a certain time of day you get her volume buttons on her phone to be able to control the volume in the Harmony App. Not sure if this is supported but I hear Tasker can do some crazy things.
Yes it does. I have two hubs and two remotes. They were bundles with the hub and IR blasters. I upgraded to the Ultimate a few months ago. I have the Harmony Ultimate One for the TV/DVR/Soundbar/Roku in the living room. It's got a few home automation things on there too. Then I have this remote for the media room with a projector/Xbox/receiver. Both work with the app.
I think you are confusing the phone app with a remote control.
I have this remote mapping through my Harmony Hub. It uses WiFi to communicate. However, it only needs access to the Harmony App for reprogramming. If Logitech cuts off Support for it, I will no longer be able to reprogram it, but it would continue to function in its current config.

$30, easy to find volume buttons, RF, no hacking required. The Harmony/SmartThings integration doesn't give you volume control as others have mentioned.

I don't own one of these, (just ordered the OP deal) but is that what you're looking for?
There's this https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00LTKGFDQ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I just picked up one of these and once setup right its pretty awesome combined with the harmony hub and shield. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00LTKGFDQ
that's about what I paid for my touch hub combo... that stupid harmony touch remote...
my advise for you living with the harmony touch remote: make sure you have it lock the screen quickly or you will randomly be setting off commands when trying to reach to pause.
Keep an eye out they usually lower prices when a new model is coming out... and while very simple they do have the standard harmony layout (and include a numeric keypad):
https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Harmony-Smart-Remote-Ultimate/dp/B00LTKGFDQ
and you can always use a smart phone running the harmony app as well.
You can get this ADD-ON Remote for any HUB.
