I thought it was annoying at first too, but like everything, unless its horribly broken, you can get used to it after a little while. That, and I can see where its handy, especially on a laptop. Its much easier to just use the side (or top, or bottom, or other side -- whichever way you swing) of the touchpad to scroll a page rather then move the cursor to the scroll bar, click on the little arrows or hold and drag the bar.

Better still, get yourself a decent notebook mouse. Best investment I made for my laptop yet. This is the one I got and it works wonders. Plus fits just about anywhere and its dongle is tiny, so it wont break off.
