This right here! I started off with it, and to this day I'm still using the compressor, just upgraded the airbrush. The set will last you a long time while you get the hang of things and improve your skill. Once you feel you're ready to move onto a better airbrush, do your research, find what you want, and then all you'll need is the airbrush and a new moisture trap that fits the new airbrush hose. Different brands have different size connectors.

But yeah, I can't recommend that set enough.

The compressor seems a little nicer than the one above, but its the same brush. I can second everything said above about the brush, its definitely not as good as a higher end one. The thing is, it is a great starter set.

My advice on buying tools is: Buy a cheap one first. If you end up using it enough/wearing it out, then its a good time to upgrade to the higher end one. The nice thing about that kit is you can switch out the brush for a more expensive one, and keep the compressor.

I cannot recommend an airbrush enough. Save up a bit and grab something basic like this I've got a similar compressor for my iwata, and have heard those air brushes are pretty good for the cost. Even if you just base coat or prime your minis with it, it is totally worth it for super clean base coats.

The better Chinese stuff is pretty inexpensive, and works well for a noob.

This is a great starter kit. Take a look at the other Master Airbrush sets - they have multi airbrushes, compressors with holding tanks, etc.

That's how I got started on the air brushing fronteir. You'll also need to buy some air brush cleaner brushes that are like 60 cents or something on amazon and buy a bottle of green stuff house cleaner. That's pretty much the simplest cleaning set up that I've been using . Now if you paint single 28 mm minis, you really don't need an airbrush. Buuut if you get one, you'll probably crap yourself in joy and start getting larger sized models because they'll be so quick to paint! A decent starting kit goes between 80 and 90 bucks. One more thing. You might want to invest in airbrush paints. But if that isn't in your budget remember to thin whatever paints you use into a SKIM MILK consistency. That piece of advice no one told me for awhile. It's a bit crucial. Otherwise there's gonna be alooot of gunk in your gun.

The airbrush is decent and the compressor is very good.

As for paints, that's really up to your preference and availability of ventilation. Lacquer (Mr Color line) and Enamel (Testors Model Master) paints require ventilation and a respirator or you'll do permanent damage to your health. Water based acrylics (Vallejo, Badger, Tamiya) are much safer and can use with a good particulate filter mask. Water based acrylics are not as durable as lacquer paints though so that's the trade off.

addendum: As /u/7x13 mentions there are water soluble, solvent based acrylics such as Tamiya and Model Master Acrylics, Mr Color Aqueous and Mr Color Acrysion which uses solvents that are less toxic but nevertheless, you should probably exercise caution.

It’s definitely incredibly worth it. With just a brush, from base coat to detail work, it’d take me probably about 3-4 hours for a tactical marine/intercessor. But with an airbrush, the work on it went from 3-4 hours to about 20 minutes just from the time I’ve saved base coating. Just go for a cheapy one on Amazon, mine is this Master one that comes with a compressor too. The compressor is great, and you won’t be doing any detail work with the brush but just the time being saved on base coats is crazy. I finished a whole Rhino in about 45 minutes just by doing the first coat with the airbrush. Definitely one of the best hobby investments you can make

Fair warning: the airbrush is Master brand, which is made in China, and is most probably a knockoff of an older Iwata. It is not an amazing airbrush, but it is decent. You will not likely be able to find a compressor and airbrush for a similar price elsewhere (at least not that I've been aware of).

I think it isn't a bad starter airbrush, but it is quite the pain to clean. I found it to be satisfactory for my needs (I used it on that Warhound WIP I posted the other day) and was a good way to get a decent compressor and airbrush to figure out how to use one and what they're good for. I'm starting to look into upgrading to a better brush myself, but if you're likely to be on a budget for a while, this could work out pretty well for a while, it just won't be amazing.

If you're just doing base coating, this kit is more than capable of giving you good results.

I have no experience with that airbrush, so I cannot speak of its quality. My recommendation is to buy the Iwata Neo from Hobby Lobby or Michaels. 50% off coupons are pretty easy to come by, so you could get it for $50-$60.

Does your son already have a minipainting setup and you're looking to give them something to add to that, or are they new and getting into the hobby?

Re-read your post and realized I spaced out and missed the part that you have given them a mini to paint in the past.

Do they have an airbrush? An airbrush set would be a very nice gift to a painter that doesn't have one and has probably been considering it but put off because of the cost of getting one.

This one is quite cheap and portable. which could be good since they're going off to college. It's a very basic set good for beginners. The compressor has no tank, so some people people turn their nose up at it because it's not perfect but I think it works fine for a portable option. I have this exact same one and I'm very happy with it because I don't paint vehicles or big warhammer armies - I paint 3-5 minis a month and use this to base, layer, and varnish with and you don't need fine-tuning air regulators to throw down some primer.

Alternatively, here's a less portable set with a full size air compressor, tank & regulator combo. Very good price and if your son gets more into airbrushing and later upgrades to a nicer high-end airbrush, they won't have to upgrade from the mini compressor as this tank and compressor as this one should do just fine with any brush.

If your son already has an airbrush set up, they might appreciate a spray booth.

I don't know what your budget is, but's here something any minipainter would love to have orbital shaker paint mixer for agitating paints without wearing out your elbow. Its definitely a luxury item lots of minipainters wish they could have (I know I wish I could afford one!)

I'm not OP, but if you want a good airbrush, get the Master Airbrush set. It's like 80 bucks for a compressor and air brush that work VERY well.

I used it to achieve this finish on my GM Ground Type with Tamiya paints.

I buy blank lures off amazon (15 bucks for 20 or so) and I have a cheap compressor and airbrush that I use. I get my paint from craft stores so nothing special there. I connected my pump to a 5 gallon air tank so my pump isnt running all the time and I used a plastic bin with a cheap bathroom vent fan to exhaust fumes for my spray booth. All in all in equipment I have $200 bucks into it. Lures, hooks, and split rings are found on amazon and I have about 50-60 bucks into that.

I could buy a lot of lure for that price but I find it fun to mess with designs and make lure for my brother.

If you plan on playing with the minis do game air not model air. My understanding is that model air is not made to be handled.

Save your money. You need $20 more for a decent starter brush here, I wouldn’t buy one of these, I had one, made one model and sold it. In honesty I’d save up, double your money and buy either a kit like this compressor with tank with brush, or preferably just the compressor for $70 and a decent airbrush like the Iwata neo for $60.

A compressor with a tank means the compressor doesn’t run all the time so prolongs the compressor life itself. It has a decent water trap and regulator to adjust pressure.

A Neo is a superb brush for the money, cheap Chinese airbrushes have less accuracy, require deeper cleaner and can give a frustrating experience.

It’s often worth spending once and spending right in this field. Hence I suggest saving your money.

As for paints, I highly recommend learning with acrylics first. They are non-toxic, water-soluble and can be sprayed indoors with minimal ventilation. I'd stay away from lacquers until you have the confidence and gear to properly use them.

For paint I'd recommend two types, Mr. Hobby Acrysion and Vallejo Mecha acrylics. Both need to be thinned down before spraying, so you will need the solvents too.

If you like Aurbrushing, you can upgrade to more branded Airbrushes like Iwata and Badger while keeping the Compressor... Then use the budget airbrush for Priming and such.

I personally have the AS186 for a year and painted assortment of 15+ HGs and MGs with it. Used included China airbrush for a few kits before deciding to get a Sparmax Airbrush since I'm convinced I'll enjoy airbrushing

Branded Airbrush gives better control over the thickness of the line, better for pre-shading.

I first just painted a cheap high grade kit to get the handle on things, doesnt take long to get a feel for it.

Picked up this airbrush kit to take care of my needs and it works really well for a cheap kit. Does exactly what you need it to do and is great for doing a lot of big pieces. The only downside is the airbrush itself it comes with is mediocre quality, so upgrading in the future is something to look into.

• Relatively easy to disassemble and clean.

• Cleaning can be difficult initially but it's good to do a stripdown between sessions. I actually enjoy it now.
  
• Although you can mix paints in the brush, I have great results with a small mixing pot and an eyedropper.
  
• Unmatched thinner/paint brands resulted in paint turning into.... micro-strings that clogged the device.
  
• Too much thinner is just as detrimental. It turns into a watery mess that gets pushed by the air.
  
• The pressure can blow lightweight models down or away without securing them with clips/tweezers.
  
• Once you figure the whole thing out, the results are uncanny: Nice, smooth gradients, paint volume efficiency, predictable ease and consistency, quick drying times, the ability to use spray templates for camouflage, and most-importantly - controllably thin layers of primer and color to maintain the best amount of detail on the models.
  
  All in all, I spent less than $120. It took a month or so to get comfortable with the device and figure out the mixing or cleaning chemical proportions. Cleaning the airbrush properly is a big part of the process and I spend maybe 20 minutes doing a rinse, flush, stripdown, ultrasonic bath, and re-assemble after each session. I'm not sure if this is normal but this is working for me so far. Thinner to paint ratio for me is about a 1:3. A few drops of cleaner is used per session. I hope this write-up serves to either scare you/others out of a purchase or solidify the expectations before you take the plunge. Post some results when you get a chance!

Take some time to take it apart after the first use. You'll learn how it works and have a better ideas of how to run and maintain it. Also an appreciation for how everything works. Also you can use windex as a reducer. When I mix I go about half windex half paint. It really helps keep the flow going and gives a nice even coat.

When I was going to take the airbrush plunge I found a cheap kit on Amazon with a brush and tank compressor.

Came out to around $140. The only reason I stopped using the brush is because I'm an idiot and lost a tiny part, so I stepped up to a Badger. I still use the compressor and it works really well as far as I can tell. Gets hot after a long session, but it holds up!

The comments here are good, definitely don't break the bank right off the bat. Getting good with a cheaper brush will make a well made one really shine.

edit: another reason to start cheap is due to everything else you'll need to get. Thinner, cleaner, mask, maybe even some paints!

I'm about 90% certain this is the one that I have. I haven't had much luck with affecting the flow of the brush. I know some people have been able to get airbrushes to spray over a relatively small area. This one seems to be either on, or off; I'm not sure if that's my fault or the brush's. But overall I'm very happy with this for a beginner's airbrush.

If you suddenly have trouble with it spraying properly and your paint is thinned pretty well, consider unscrewing the nozzle piece and checking it from the inside I've noticed that I'll get a buildup there that will allow airflow but not paint. Clearing it seems to get things back on track. And make sure to clean the brush after every time you take it out. Don't let it sit out.

Its a little cheaper than the one you linked ( maybe not after shipping). Its a gravity fed brush which is what you want. The one you link to looks to be siphon fed. The compressors look the same except your link has an additional tank which in my opinion is unnecessary.

I still use the compressor but I've since upgraded to an Iwata Airbrush that I got for pretty cheap on sale last year. The compressor is on its last legs though.

I can tell you that I did not like the airbrush that it came with. It was cheap and got clogged a lot. But for what its worth it's still an airbrush and will give you a good start.

If you're going to use gw paints they have an airbrush line that I've had great success with, and they came out with their own thinner for air brushes called the air caste thinner.

If you were serious about it not being a toy however, there are some cheap alternative systems that wouldn't be good for an adult trying to get serious but for a kid should be more than enough.

Depends on your budget, I'd recommend getting quality tools from the get go, if you can afford them.

Decent starting setup would be TC-20T compressor (or equivalent, there's a bunch of similar compressors coming from the same chinese factory) and either Neo for Iwata, Badger Patriot 105 or H&S Ultra. All of them offer good performance and will last you quite a while. Personally, I'd go for Ultra simply for the ease of maintenance.

If you're on a really tight budget, you can look for some cheap chinese kit. Not the highest quality, but it'll do well enough as a learning tool.

As far as the white goes, I'd recommend getting an airbrush. Then you can lay down a nice and smooth white basecoat on a squad in minutes. Then you just have to pick out the details. I used this basic airbrush setup -

I haven't personally tried Solarez, but I've heard from other cuemakers who have tried it that it was "just ok".

I have tried several epoxy finish techniques in the past and I've struggled to get it to really bond well with bare woods. I had better luck basecoating the bare wood with superglue, then finishing with epoxy over it.

The most annoying thing with epoxy finishes is they seem to bubble and separate from the underlying wood a lot easier than auto clear. I've had the best luck with automotive clear which I spray on with an airbrush. I found a good kit on amazon that comes with a compressor and a decent airbrush. I've used this kit for about three years now and it's been great:

Master Airbrush

I buy my auto clear in the smallest cans possible. The clear I use is two part. Four parts of clear mixed with one part activator. I use cheap plastic drinking cups as mixing containers and I bought a bulk pack of pipettes to mix up the small amounts of clear you use for cue finishing.

Disposable Pipettes

Make sure your plastic mixing cups are recycle code 1 or 2 (polyethelene) which is resistant to solvents. Recycle code 5 and 6 (polyprop or polystyrene) melt immediately when exposed to solvents. I buy the cheap clear party cups at the store and they work fine.

I thin the clearcoat quite a lot with lacquer thinner, especially for the first coat so the clear soaks deep into the surface and gets a good grip to build subsequent coats onto.

If you do try the Solarez, let me know how you like it. I've been paying attention to other makers impressions of it but most go back to their prior method after trying it on a few cues.

Thats the one there. Get some acetone to clean out the airbrush between paints. You can get some really fine minute details with the right tip and some practice.

My wife and kids got me THIS KIT for my birthday. It works great!

If you don’t have a compressor already go with this kit as a starting point. There are other options of similar kits with more stuff, but this is as basic as I would go.

If you already have a compressor I got this one. There are other kits with different needle sizes for not much more if you want to go to that. For me, I figure if I want a different needle size I’ll be to the point of getting a better airbrush so I went with the single needle.

For paints I like Vallejo game air. The badger air paints are good on paper but on minies they are a bit thin on coverage.

So here's why I switched to an Airbrush:

1. Primer: I live in the PNW and our winters are cold and wet. Standing outside in my garage with a rattle can for primer sucks but then waiting 30 min + sometimes (because of the cold and humidity) is worse. Airbrushing primer on takes seconds and you have more options for colors.
   
   
2. Base Colors: With an airbrush the process of getting a smooth and even base coat is fantastic. For the first time I'm doing Imperial Fists! Doing a yellow basecoat is one of the most difficult things you'll come up against but an AB makes it simple and way less frustrating.
   
   
3. Stencils: I just ordered some Ork check stencils and I'm excited to add them to some looted wagons soon.

what about this set to start with like a different actual airbrush?

I own this kit. I've been futzing with it for months, but I'm still afraid to use it on an actual kit. lol The compressor is really quiet, and while it's not name branded, it really does the job well. the brush also works well.

I'm struggling to airbrush Tamiya X-2 Gloss White. I continue to get an orange peel look or it comes out way too thick. I'm always running into dry tip when trying to paint Tamiya X-2 Gloss White.

I am thinning it with Tamiya X-20A. I always thin it to a milky consistency. I tried spraying it between 10-20 PSI. I'm using an Iwata NEO CN airbrush and a cheap compressor. I am at a loss for what I'm doing wrong.

Currently having some airbrush troubles. My first session with my airbrush went perfectly well. The paint looked smooth and nice. During my second session (1 week later) the paint started to have these micro bump look. My airbrush wasn't sputtering either.

These are some of the problem solving I tried.

• Thinned and de-thinned my paint.
  
• Checked for clogging.
  
• Took a part my airbrush and cleaned all the parts.

That's the one I got about two weeks ago. Bought it and airbrush cleaner fluid (a mask is also recommended, I had one laying around) and have had a lot of fun with it. For years I had been intimidated by airbrushes because of the cost and seeming complexity, but after finally deciding to take the plunge and make the investment in one, they're not as intimidating as they seem to use and maintain. It's a whole new world of painting to explore. And it saves me so much fucking time when it comes to painting and shading my models well with an easy to learn but hard to master technique called "zenithal highlighting". I stripped some old rats and got 40 of the above rats done in 1 six hour sitting. Sure, I need to go do some detail work eventually, but the rats in the pics above would have taken at least twice as long for me to have gotten to the same point the old way, with a far worse result. The reason I am mentioning it now is I think there's a lot of potential to create glowing and flame effects with it. I did a trial run there on my rats using Vallejo livery green air to create the illusion of light shining on them from their warpstone spears. Maybe you could create similar glowing and/or shining light type effect with the fireborn?

I just bought this, and it's great for me. It has a .5mm tip which would probably be considered large - they're usually .3mm. That big honkin' tip means I can blow any paint through it with little or no thinning.

I also bought the Master starter kit for like $70 that comes with a working compressor and crappy airbrush. Honestly, if it could blow the glittery createx crap that I use it would have been perfectly OK for gunpla. It depends on how invested you want to get. If you want a very good airbrush, get an Iwata, Paasche, or a Badger. I have a Badger, but I end up using my son's Master Airbrush most of the time because I don't need superfine detail for Gunpla. He has this kit and it has served both of us very well.

TCP Global also has great customer service. Or at least, their customer service to me has always been fantastic. It's a great starter kit that can be expanded later on with an external tank or a better airbrush. But for the price, it's a great value if it's in your budget.

I'm working on my first air brushed kit. I'm not a patient person and as a result of that I got this It'll air brush, alright but the psi is about 18 when going full and when it's spraying it drops to about 10. It does okay and I feel like my purchase is justified, just barely. So yeah, live and learn.

Well if you get an airbrush then it can be used to replace the base coat without the need for a primer coat...they can put down a really beautiful powder coat in a short time that is difficult to replicate with a brush, especially on large flat areas (imo)

I wouldn't get one until you're buried in models honestly...I was about 60-70 models deep before I decided to get one cause I really like the hobby, its an investment if you find you actually like painting or want to build an army to play with.

That warning aside there is a cheap set available on Amazon for $80 if you have prime that I bought, since it comes with a compressor, that I have had no problems with. You have to give it a break after 15-20 min or so to cool off bc the compressor gets hot but I havent had any serious issues with it at all. The brush is not very detailed but its a great practice brush for beginners and dosent cost $400 or more like a real pro brush will. You need practice with a cheap one before getting one of those or you wont be able to use it to matter, like months of practice I'm still learning the intricacies and I paint a lot.

The other difficulty an airbrush introduces is paint. Out of pot paints will not work in an airbrush. They need to be thinned SUBSTANTIALLY or the brush will clog up and need to be thoroughly cleaned before it will work again. It's incredibly frustrating and happens a lot when you're learning how to thin paints to keep them thick enough to make a not watery coat but thin enough to not clog... best bet is thinner is safer, it takes less time to apply 10 coats than clean your brush (maybe a small exaggeration but it really is a 0 production time waster) Vallejo makes a Model Air brand that is prethinned, I would recommend using those whenever possible, or at least for black/white since you will use those colors a lot (also the GW white primer is often watery and can't be used as a white layer like the black primer can...that stuff makes your models BLACK...) unfortunately they don't make their entire product line in Air so you're going to have to thin your own paints somewhat often. I would highly recommend buying a pre-made model paint thinner from a hobby store/website instead of trying to use the cheaper option of 50% Isopropyl Alcohol, the pre-mades also have some chemical that acts as a 'flow optimizer' which just works better than IPA.

TL;DR: 1. Buy Models

4. Repeat 1-3 until Buried in Unpainted Plastic Krak

This one. Master airbrush, it's my first airbrush set up, but I've painted a few kits already. I like the compressor, the airbrush gets the job done, pain in the ass to clean though.

You don't need one with a tank for them to be quiet though.

I use one like the one in this kit and it's quiet enough where I can watch TV while painting without issue. It's quieter than my washing machine, in another room, on the other end of my apartment behind a couple of closed doors.

They also have a very small "tank" that charges up quickly then the thing shuts off. The tank is only good for like 3 seconds however. They do have some issues with extended, constant use and heat however. Over 2 minutes or so of constant use the tank will generate too much heat.

Not that model specifically, it just looks like it.

This is the package I bought, though I eventually ended up replacing the airbrush with a badger.

A couple things of note: Most of the master airbrushes are just cheap Iwata knockoffs, and they're frustrating to take apart if you have any problems with them. Also, I have a hard time spraying if it's humid, because the moisture capture in this compressor isn't very good and it will eventually start spitting water up through the line.

B. Instamorph Moldable Plastic

Here's another fun item we can both try and explore :D It's called the Instamorph Moldable Plastic :D Basically, it's a bunch of plastic pellets that you can soften in hot water. When it's soft enough, you can then shape it into anything as if it's clay :D It will solidify again after a few minutes and it's very durable :D It's also reusable, so for example if you didn't like what you made, you can just put it back into the hot water and it will soften up again :D SO AWESOME! :D It's pretty affordable as well because it's less than $20 :D

You can use it to create little toys, accessories, or you can even use it to repair broken things at home! One reviewer on Amazon even said they used it to create a false tooth and it was functional and fitted him/her well lol :D

C. Smooth On Silicone Mold Making Rubber Oomoo 30

Oh YES :D Since we're gonna create lots of fun stuff, we also need a way to create a mold so we can easily recreate our shapes without having to redo them from the very beginning :D Here's Smooth On Silicone Mold Making Rubber Oomoo 30 to help us with that :D Fortunately for such a useful item, it's normally around $25 to $30 and we can use this many many many times :)

This is possibly the most well loved mold making item that every fun loving creative person has :D Just mix the two parts, pour it on the item you want to make a mold out of, wait a couple hours and that's it :D

Here's a video of Smooth On in action making a mold out of an action figure :D So cool! :D Imagine all the items we can create with Instamorph, we can use Smooth On to make molds out of them and recreate them easily :D We can just push the soft Instamorph into the mold and we'll have the items we made once more :D

Of course, we can also make an item out of silicone so we can have some kind of soft stretchy item :D Look, some people make props using them... like horror gore hands lol :D

D. Bubble Head Nurse from Silent Hill 2

Let me welcome you to my beloved world of toys :D Here is something I like that you might also enjoy :D It's the Bubble Head Nurse from the horror game Silent Hill 2 :D

In the world of Silent Hill, the main character gets transported into an alternate world where scary creatures and the undead wander freely. One of them is the iconic sexy Bubble Head nurse. At first glance, you would notice her very attractive body from a distance as the shadows hide her face. As she gets nearer, you'll notice that she's holding a knife or a metal pipe, ready to lay the smackdown on you... and then you see her horrific face! OH MY LORD :O It's a zombie disfigured nurse!!! All the excitement that you might have had from your little nurse fantasy gets ruined and you remember that in a world made up of nightmares, there is only despair and dread :D

E. Kenshin Himura from Rurouni Kenshin

This one's something very personal to me, but you might also like him once you learn who he is :D His name is Kenshin Himura from a show called Rurouni Kenshin aka Samurai X here in the USA :)

I really loved his show back during my teenage years. He has a very interesting story and he's just so awesome!

Kenshin Himura was a samurai used as an assassin by the Japanese government during the Meiji era. Anybody who opposed the Japanese government back then, Kenshin heartlessly killed. He really was the best and most skilled killer of the time.

One day, he was tasked to kill a person that the government wanted to get rid of. That person was supposed to get married to someone, so the two of them fought. All throughout Kenshin's career as an assassin, he was practically untouchable, until this moment when the opponent somehow managed to slash at his face to give him a scar in a last ditch attempt to survive so that he'll be able to marry the girl he loved. Kenshin finished him off, but suddenly, knowing that the person he killed was about to get married somehow affected him and he felt some guilt.

Later on, he met a girl whom he fell in love with named Tomoe. Her affections slowly transformed his ice cold killer's heart into a warmer human one that has become capable of giving value to people's lives. Unfortunately, it's later revealed that Tomoe's actually the fiancee of the previous person he assassinated and she was actually out for revenge with the help of an opposing group. Still, despite her original intent to avenge her first lover, she also fell in love with Kenshin as a person.

Tomoe revealed the group's plan to kill him, but the battle already started. Later on as Kenshin's being beaten up because he's unable to see clearly anymore and he was about to get killed, Tomoe stepped in the middle of the fight to grab the enemy's weapon, but Kenshin didn't know she was there and he stabbed right through her and the enemy. Tomoe sacrificed herself to save Kenshin, but in the end, she gave him another scar on his face as a symbollic message that he can repent for his past sins by never killing again and using his skills to help people instead.

From then on, Kenshin started wandering Japan, helping random people with their problems. He still uses his sword to fight, but he uses a modified sword with a blunt edge so that he'll only knock out the bad guys and not kill them. He also has become a friendlier and more cheerful person because of the positivity that Tomoe gave him and that's how Kenshin finally started making friends.

I really love the story of Kenshin because it tells us that even the worst person can change once he realizes the true value of his own life. If you learn to love yourself, then you will learn to love others. That is the core message of the Rurouni Kenshin series and it's very true.

Kenshin's story is very inspiring for many people because it tells us that there will always be hope even if you did some truly horrible things in your life, as long as you're prepared to take responsibility and contribute to society in a positive way. Even if you started out life as a very bad person who can't find happiness, once you open yourself up to others, you'll find beauty in this world and happiness as well.

Another plus is that the original opening theme song is awesome haha :)

this is a great Airbrush starter kit.

I got one a little over a year ago and it has held up really well for the price.

I would recommend using Tamiya Acrylic paints, thinned either with alcohol based thinner, or lacquer thinner.

you will also need a spray booth, a DIY booth would be the cheapest route but many folks go for this one and it seems to do the job.

there are many other supplies( respirator, pipettes, alligator clips, skewers, etc) you can pick up but those are the big items to get started.

This kit is what I started with, except that I got a Badger Patriot 105 as my starting airbrush(on sale at Amazon for about 50% off). That compressor has served me well for almost a year now, and it's fantastic for basecoating, priming, etc.


Don't forget that you'll probably also want a spray booth, and you'll need a respirator(don't breathe aerosolized acrylic paint).


I've used GW paints in the the airbrush; it works but requires thinning. "Always thin your paints" is even more key than when brush painting; how much will vary depending on brand, color, specific pot of paint, etc etc. I also use Vallejo Air paints and occasionally spray P3 paints through the brush.

I bought that one, and for a beginner I think it works well enough and gets the job done. I've only had a few issues (really just one on multiple occasions) with it but nothing major, mostly just after a good cleaning. That being said I do eventually want to get an Iwata. I think the compressor will be good , the airbrush will be enough to start. If she really likes it she will just have to upgrade the airbrush. The compressors comes with a water trap built in. Get some airbrush ink set and you are good !

All the Master airbrushes are just "okay" so having those extra 2 brushes is just bloatware. All you'll really need is the dual action gravity feed type anyway. Once you've gained enough experience and have saved up enough money you'll ditch that G25 eventually and go for the more high performance quality branded ones.

The 20 bucks you saved on that version you should put into getting those airbrush cleaning bristles and airbrush lube.

I bought this. It's great for straight painting, but, so far haven't gotten good results with the brush with line work. Still practicing. The compressor is fine though, and, some of the guys here I know use it with their nicer brush for very good results.

These kits give you a basic brush and compressor.

If you want to get a good brush, look into Grex Genesis brushes. Amazing quality and not too costly.

Stay away from the Iwata Neo, as it's not worth the money (pay the extra for a grex).

H&S brushes are my favourite, but they are very expensive.

Here ya go The airbrush is not the best but the compressors great I'm still using it. The only thing with it I recommend is to disconnect the hose for a little bit and let it run just to get the water out of it.

For anyone who's used the Master TC-20 compressor which comes in this Amazon bundle:

Mine doesn't seem to work (pressurize?) at <20 psi. Over 20 works fine. Does yours do this too? If so, is this described in the specs somewhere? I've been using it for a while but I didn't try looking into this until now.

First I disassembled the controller, then sanded it with fine grit sandpaper. I used opaque white (Createx 5212) as a base coat. Once dry, I proceeded with Fluorescent Violet (Createx 5401) in two coats. I then applied 3 layers of gloss top coat (Createx 5604) with a heat gun application in between.

For a first airbrush, definitely get a master airbrush with the compressor, unless you do have a compressor then get the cheap NEO as stated.

Found it from the Wiki, and it's WAAAAAY cheaper than sourcing locally. There are two versions of the product from that page. The Standard and the Deluxe. From what I can see, it's the Deluxe where the compressor comes with a tank so I want that. Questions:

1. On the right side of the page for the Standard version, it says This item ships to Philippines. Want it Thursday, Nov. 8? Personally, I'd recommend getting a dedicated compressor or running a line to your hobby area. I will say I'm against CO2 Cartridge/Canisters. Environmental impact aside, one of the key basic Airbrush skills is controlling the pressure output. A Cartridge or Smaller tank may have dips or fluctuations in pressure which could prove to be less than ideal when airbrushing. If you do buy a large refillable tank, I'd still suggest a moisture trap/regulator combination so you can keep an eye on the pressure and prevent moisture buildup.

You're not going to get a good setup for under $100, but you can get a functional setup to get started and upgrade later if you want.


What did you get from masters? Was it something like this kit because that's probably the best sort of thing to get at the cheap end to get started, and once you learn what you're doing/how to clean & maintain tings/what you want from an airbrush you can upgrade.

In what way was the airbrush not working? And for paint lures are you using acrylic paints or something more involved to work with?

I myself started with the Iwata Neo CN Gravity Feed and I loved every bit of it (Though here when I bought mine it was around $45 USD with a Coupon at a Local Hobby Store)

This Compressor is what I use and it is great, plus if you get it it'll come with an Airbrush :P

(And if anything you can just buy the Compressor/Airbrush set and yoou are good to go)

I've only Airbrushed twice and both I've been pretty happy with the results. You don't necessarily need to start with something pricey.

For starters you're going to need an airbrush system

Then you'll need paints obviously, your standard painting supplies: self-etching primer, cleaning pads, gloves etc.

I bought a masters brush as my first and it was actually amazing for 25$ that i paid. obvious buying a cheap airbrush you could have issues so always something to keep in mind.

IF you or your family already has a cheap air compressor (pancake compressor) then you could use that and just get the brush, fitting, and moister trap. I'm currently using a pancake compressor. It's really loud... but it keeps the job done.


Also, do not go with enamel. Acrylic will be the paint you want to use. It will be the easier and safest. Tamiya is a good one if you can get your hands on it. Tamiya is a hybrid paint, but its relatively safe. If you use lacquer or enamel you will have to have good ventilation and use a respirator. With acrylics you can use 90% alcohol to clean your brush or look up cheap mixes that people have come up with themselves.

I've got a question regarding my starting airbrush. I'm comparing the Badger 105 to a Master.

I don't have a compressor and I do plan on using an airbrush for multiple kits over the year, but I don't think I'll be able to upgrade for a while. If I buy the Master, I'd assume the airbrush would have problems before the compressor, but hopefully it would last long enough for the upgrade. Can I use the compressor from the Master kit for the Badger 105 (upgrading to the Badger later)? Also, does anyone know how long their compressor has lasted?

I do not like to use spray cans form bad passed experience when i was five or six. However, a lot of people use spray cans, however you can also get good results justusing hand painting.

if you do go with mixing your own colors, I find that using a small digital scale, to measure the paint's weight is the easiest way to reproduce the colors you make.

Ether way I recamend that you to get some primer ether way as it allows the paint to adhere better to a gunpla. I like to use Vallejo Grey Primer which you can also paint on with a brush.

This is the one I use, it's a good starter set with a decent brush and compressor.

It can get a bit pricey to start up though, you'll want to get airbrush thinner (I use Vallejos), and I cannot reccomend dropper bottles enough over the pots citadel paints come in. Not just for airbrushing but just day to day painting is made so much easier.

You can get really great quality ones for like 38 cents each shipping is a little expensive though.

Another great thing is you can run vallejo primer straight through an airbrush too and never have to deal with rattle cans or accidental shitty prime jobs again.

I agree with HeyUOK. I got the master airbrush kit because it was affordable and had everything to get started. I quickly upgraded to an Iwata airbrush, but the compressor w/ regulator is still working perfectly fine.

I got this and then the iwata hp-cs for $120. So about $200 for the whole airbrush setup.
