First steps: send the certified letter saying "not no but hell no" and make a copy of your lease with the "I rent the whole apartment" parts circled.

I would suggest taking a few days off work around Oct1, literally barricading the door and putting on netflix or something. Just chill in your apartment the whole time.

DO NOT allow your landlord to start moving someone in. If someone tries to break into your apartment (i.e. your landlord gave them a key), call the police ASAP. It'll be a lot easier to get the police involved if they have not moved in, because then it's not an eviction issue. Have copies of the information readily available to hand to the cops.

u/LinkFrost · 206 pointsr/PublicFreakout

I’m pretty sure I know something similar to the sticks you’re describing. You can get a high quality one for $20 off of Amazon: Master Lock Security Bar, Adjustable Door Security Bar. They’re telescoping/sliding metal pole thingies that you force under the doorknob (on your side of the door). You need to adjust the height of the rod to fight your doorknob snugly. This basically makes it impossible for anybody to enter from the other side unless they somehow destroy the door.

Edit: there’s also this: Doorricade Door Bar

u/t0talnonsense · 60 pointsr/legaladvice

You can't be overly cautious with your safety. Like it or not, this guy has unlimited access to your apartment, assuming he has access to the master key. I would probably look into a security bar/door jam that will provide more security (at least while you are home) until you feel safe again. I had a friend who lived in a sketch part of town for a bit, and put one of these up every night before she went to sleep. Never had any real trouble, but it was some good peace of mind.

u/Rokeon · 53 pointsr/legaladvice

I believe someone suggested this last time, but get a security door bar that you can use to keep the door from opening while you're at home. Quick, cheap, and you're not damaging or changing the property without the landlord's permission- it won't prevent unauthorized showings while you're out but it'll at least keep them from walking in on you while you're in bed again.

u/swingthatwang · 52 pointsr/LetsNotMeet

What I've learned reading through LNMs is that problems can escalate, and they usually start by surveillance and then crossing your physical boundary, such as entering your home. I think the Dr. Ramsey story noted this escalation pattern.

A few things to consider:

  • Buy a scanner or have the police scan your house for transmitting devices.
  • Buy a hidden security camera pointed at your door and bedroom. Cost is not as important as your safety. The cameras will help you legally maneuver bc that is evidence you can now use.
  • This bad boy: http://www.amazon.com/Master-Lock-265DCCSEN-Dual-Function-Security/dp/B0002YUX8I/ (And read the reviews for further improving it)
  • Youtube self defense videos, carry and know how to use pepper spray or taser, if where you are allows it. Practice defense moves with friends.

In the meantime, stay the fuck away and do not enter without someone else with you. Only go back to get things and during the day, if possible. Don't be afraid to call the police. Also, small tip -but make sure your phone is charged. You don't want to be in a bad situation and have zero battery left.

    CONSTANT VIGILANCE!

get a dog, alarm system.

you can buy cheap $20 door jam rods, they work for sliding and normal doors.

Master Lock 265D Door Security Bar, Adjustable from 27-1/2 in. to 44-1/2 in, White, Pack of 1 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0002YUX8I/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_phGFDbX79DSEG

strengthen your doors with longer lock screws and reinforced metal frame parts.

buy and train with a gun. have a family plan and drill and practice what you all should do.

get more motion sensor lights.

even if you don’t have them get those big warning stickers for gates and windows/doors that indicate you have a big ass dog and or a security system.

maybe you can find some half joking half serious sticker that has a picture of a pit bull ‘My Pitbull Will Bite and Never Let Go’

u/rusty0123 · 32 pointsr/JUSTNOMIL

You need a fox lock. I use them when I travel.

u/derpatwerp · 26 pointsr/relationships

I bought one of these at Sears when I lived with an ex who traveled a lot for work, leaving me alone in our apt for weeks at a time. It tested true when a drunk friend stayed the night.

god that’s terrifying... all of sound like dangerous and terrifying situations. possible assulters, peeping toms, maybe robbers?? it’s freaking endless. sometimes it’s terrifying just being a woman... if i were you I’d absolutely get some protection and a dog before living on your own. it’s hard to raise a puppy but beyond worth it. sometimes just having a second set of senses is worth it, the company is very comforting too.

there’s also a stick that you can get for your door - one like this
Master Lock 265D Door Security Bar, Adjustable from 27-1/2 in. to 44-1/2 in, White, Pack of 1 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0002YUX8I/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_IXNNDbKCQQYVZ

u/purplehailstorm · 22 pointsr/LetsNotMeet

Yikes! Consider getting yourself one of these for your apartment door -- that way, even if he somehow gets a key for it, he still can't get in while you're home.

u/jowilkin · 22 pointsr/AskNYC

You can get a bar like this: https://www.amazon.com/Master-Lock-Security-Adjustable-White/dp/B0002YUX8I

You don't need to install anything so a landlord can't complain about you altering the apartment and no one will be able to open the door from the outside while it's against the door even if they have keys to all the locks.

u/botheyes · 18 pointsr/whatisthisthing

my security bar. the best 16 bucks i've spent for peace of mind.

u/WPADawg · 14 pointsr/CCW

Your experience seriously sucks. I hear you loud and clear on the gun control point as well. I hope you don't mind a few questions:

  • What makes you follow a concealed carry subreddit? Are you from the US? Do you have any experience with guns? Just curious.
  • How common are home invasion robberies in the UK? I read about the insanity of stories of homeowners being victimized by robbers, then jailed for attempting to defend themselves. It just boggles my mind.
  • Is the mere possession of the replica firearm a crime, or threatening someone with it (even in self-defense), or both?

Thanks much, and glad you and your girlfriend are OK. I also suggest investing in a door barricace. Even something like this could make a difference.
u/LizzyZ943 · 13 pointsr/kansascity

I’ve no idea about the harassment but I wanted to recommend getting a door stopper stick. I too have had maintenance enter my apartment when I was asleep. Super creepy! Master Lock 265D Door Security Bar, Adjustable from 27-1/2 in. to 44-1/2 in, White, Pack of 1, https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0002YUX8I/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_v-ArDb1K1R619

u/mr1337 · 12 pointsr/homedefense

I completely understand your stance on firearms in the home for the safety of your children, but I wouldn't necessarily throw it out without looking into the options to properly secure and store it, while being accessible to you and your wife (and ONLY you and your wife). I understand a lot of people can be uncomfortable with even that. Ultimately, it's you who has to make the decision. However, it's the single best tool in a home invasion. (And just because they "never happen here" doesn't mean they can't happen.) For ideas without the use of firearms, see this search of the subreddit to get some more ideas.

Another tool I almost forgot about is a door security bar that can be used to wedge your door shut while you're home.

Another costly modification is window security film. There was a former burglar AMA on reddit a while back, and he said this stuff was his #1 deterrent while breaking into homes. It takes a lot more time and makes a lot more noise to break in. They will likely give up and seek an easier target.

u/whattothewhonow · 12 pointsr/tifu

$19.61

Does not modify "their house" in any way. Allows you to beat the sin out of your love stump in peace and privacy.

u/possiblyapigman · 11 pointsr/nosleep

>I slammed my own door shut, locked it, and put a chair in front of it for good measure.

You...!

Get a Security Bar! They are cheap as hell, work better than a chair and are an absolute must-have security accessory for anyone who lives in an apartment. These keep people who may have keys (landlord, former tenants, particularly sneaky people, etc.) from opening your door.

They are probably even more useful when you live next door to a murder with mommy issues.

u/cosmos7 · 10 pointsr/legaladvice

The water leak is an emergency worth entering for. As described all of the other times should have required proper notice, or at the least waiting for you to answer the door... landlord or proxy cannot just walk in as they please.

Sounds like they're having trouble listening. At the very least you might want to consider investing in a security stick to prevent them walking in unannounced.

u/jaxposts · 10 pointsr/EARONS

Sliding doors and windows are a very common entry point for offenders.

Before bed consider adding a door jammer on any doors that lead outside and open inwards. These can also be used on sliding glass doors but then again you can always just throw a sturdy pole/pipe in the track of these. Old broom and mop handles are great for this. Anything that slides is incredibly easy and quiet to open with a bit of force.

Close any curtains or blinds once the sun goes down and keep the porch light on every night.

u/garfnodie · 10 pointsr/Advice

You might look into a security bar like this one. I would imagine you could find then locally at a brick and mortal store if you don't want to wait for shipping.

u/99levtt · 9 pointsr/chicago

I'd recommend one of these door security bars if you have a back door/seldom used door that next to hardwood. It makes it really, really hard to be sneaky when you're breaking in as it requires a ton of force to get through.

u/PageFault · 9 pointsr/badroommates

Why not try to practice self control and talk to them like an adult first, and reserve losing your shit if it continues after the talk?

It's going to be tough to ask children to be quiet in the middle of the afternoon. It may be best just to move out.

Here are a few options to keep the kids out of your room in the meantime:

  5. New computer
u/DeeDee304 · 8 pointsr/homedefense

I would put up the 'Chunky doesn't live here' sign with a nice big red store bought 'No trespassing' sign underneath it on every window and door in the back of your apartment. I think that even illiterate crackheads would probably know what 'No trespassing' means. I would not mention anything about the police; someone might consider that a challenge.

I would also think about some inexpensive upgrades to security, especially on the back of your apartment. Use a security bar like this, or cut a piece of broomstick to block the track if it is a sliding door, and get longer screws for the doorjamb. Amazon also has some cheap, 120db door and window alarms that have excellent reviews. They are battery operated with no wiring. Could you do more with more cash? Most certainly. But for $50 or less you can upgrade your security pretty significantly. edit:formatting

u/HeyNoniNoni · 5 pointsr/LetsNotMeet

change the locks if you can, get a security system if you can. get a door jam, too. like this: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002YUX8I/ref=ox_sc_sfl_title_15?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER

I had a double dead bolt, and it made me happy. if you known maintenance is coming (they have to give you warning in the US in most states I believe) you can leave the deadbolt off, but otherwise, if you can't move, take precautions to protect yourself. something strange is for sure happening and there's no way to know who it is or what they want.

u/arcsecond · 5 pointsr/homedefense

Security bar? Nothing to screw in, no changes to door or floor. Admittedly, only works while you're IN the apartment.

u/Blurgas · 5 pointsr/legaladvice

The security bar Zodiac mentioned is probably something like this
Roughly the equivalent of jamming a chair under your door knob, which means you're either going to have to punch a hole through the door to remove it, or break the hinges out of the frame

u/BeckyDaTechie · 5 pointsr/JUSTNOMIL

Glad Squish is here and healthy! You were a rockstar.

So, I know getting around is hard right after a little one, but just in case you feel the need for some physical reinforcement to your boundaries, putting one of these in the bedroom, nursery, or wherever it is you'll go to feed Squish during "grandma's" visit will assure you she won't get the chance to just do whatever the hell she feels entitled to with Your Daughter. If she can't get into the room, she can't run roughshod over you.

The fact that you seem to be willing to allow her around you (collectively) after that performance is far more forgiving and tolerant than I would ever be. I'm already establishing with my OH that, if a child should ever happen and I cannot deliver at home, I'd better be bothered by precisely NO ONE and those who intrude at the hospital will be persona non grata after the fact. I have a well-established history of cutting out rotten people and no qualms about doing it again, but the courage it took-- desperation, really-- isn't easy to learn. But my JNGrandmother and JNMother had me so shut down and panicked that I felt backed into a corner where I had no other choice.

When you feel like you have no choices, you find the courage to do extraordinary things. Your only choice now is to protect your child. I hope that woman knows what kind of bear she could be poking with her foolishness.

Good luck!

u/LipstickSingularity · 5 pointsr/LetsNotMeet

You can get a more heavy duty safety bar thing. We have something like this one. It seems pretty snug when adjusted correctly.

u/k955301 · 5 pointsr/autism

Check with r/legal for a procedure to file a report without pressing charges. IANAL, but in your shoes I would do the following:

  • have your father take photos of the bruises

  • explain to your father

  • report the incident to the police

It does not sound like you are prepared to press charges yet.

Then, and I am not sure how best to go about this one, ask your father for help taking your brother to a police station to explain to him what happens to him when he hurts someone. Ie, you are booked, you go to jail, you appear before a judge and someone decides if you are taken to prison.

If he understands the consequences clearly it could serve you well.

In the mean time this will stop anyone from coming through a door:

There are products like this, but the reviews show people having a good amount of success as well as people who say it doesn't work.

Also, there are things like this, where it will merely alert you to your door opening.

u/bugdog · 3 pointsr/legaladvice

Stay safe, OP, please.

Can you put an interior lock on that door so that you can secure it when you're home? The advice I want to give you is probably highly inappropriate for this forum, so an interior lock is all I have to offer.

I don't mean a crappy chain lock, either. Hell, come to think of it, you don't even need to put a lock on the door, you can get something like this -Dual-Function Security Bar https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0002YUX8I/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_GJ4xyb536G5GY

It doesn't require any modifications to the door and will keep anyone out that you don't want in while you're home.

u/cybin · 3 pointsr/legaladvice

Don't get a chain lock as that needs to be installed (screws thru the door frame). Get something like this.

u/sexandtacos · 3 pointsr/AskWomen

LOVELY. I can keep the place as clean or as dirty as I want, I do what I want with my time, and I get to decide who can and can't come over and when.

I had one of these in my last apartment, as it was in a high-crime neighborhood. I now live in a place with a sliding door out onto a patio, and even though I'm on the second floor I have a steel dowel (just a length of cut pipe, really) that goes down in the well where the door slides in order to keep it shut, even if it's unlocked.

Then there's the basics for being in the parking lot alone/at night: keep your head up, look extremely aware of your surroundings, walk with a purpose, don't be distracted. Don't advertise that you're a single woman living alone, and you should be OK.

u/Cato_Keto_Cigars · 3 pointsr/RBI

If you're worried about the door locks, but cant change it due to the lease - one option is to lock it at night when you're home (sleep soundly) using a portable door jam.

They made me feel a little safer because a burglar just can't push open the door. But most burglaries happen in broad day light so get to know your neighbors. :)

Well, you can get either a door wedge (cheaper), or some sort of security bar like this one (more effective).

Get a security bar! Seriously, no one will be able to get inside with one of these bad boys stuck under there. I had my dad test it with my front door and he could only open it about an inch and a half with brute force.

You may want to look at DIY alarm systems, or a wireless camera you can control with something like ZONEMINDER.

Also, if you are on a budget you may not be able to aquire a $2000 1911 race-gun, but I betcha that for around $200 you can buy a brand new, ugly yet 100% reliable Hi-Point pistol in 9mm.

u/Scurrin · 3 pointsr/guns

Something anyway.

I have a gun in 3 rooms of my apartment. I have a camping bacpack with a machete stapped to the outside in another. I have a master lock door bar on my front door which is easily swingable at someone if needed. My fireplace has a number of wrought iron tools in front of it. Any number of kitchen knives in a block in the kitchen. My car has a collapsable baton in the pocket on the door (mainly to break the window if needed) and a collapsable entrenching tool in the trunk. I can't think of anywhere there isn't something to grab if needed.

Honestly this was not planned, I just happen to have stuff around and am aware of what everyday opjects could be used for in an emergency. My wife and I also have a set of EDC items that include some defensive tools (knives/spray/baton) though I've got no reason to fear any of my neighbors or had any issues in my area.

You can get something like a security bar to very cheaply upgrade your security. Only works when you're there (obv) but it will make it very very hard for anyone to enter your house. I highly recommend this option or something like Master Lock 265DCCSEN Dual-Function Security Bar https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0002YUX8I/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_DEbTzb0ZJWCG5

u/Brian_dc · 2 pointsr/homedefense

As stated elsewhere, I'm sure counseling would help but there are things that you can do to make you feel safer.

  1. Look for a security bar (http://www.amazon.com/Master-Lock-265DCCSEN-Dual-Function-Security/dp/B0002YUX8I) or door chain. This will prevent entry for times when you are inside the room.

  2. Camera (in case someone does come in) such as DropCam so if there is an intruder, there is evidence. (May also make you feel better knowing that the person can be identified)

  3. Upgrades / further discussion with the landlord. You may be able to pay for an upgraded door / deadbolt / security locks with their consent.

The last option is to move to a new location / distance yourself from a real (or even imaginary) situation that is causing you stress. If the sounds / sights / smells are triggering these memories then find someplace that isn't making you so afraid.

Hope some of these suggestions help!

My parents had one and I managed to open the door partially coming home drunk one night back in high school. It does stop the door from opening very much, and honestly if someone is strong enough to force it then they likely can't fit through the small gap created.

I highly recommend one.

My suggestion is actually more of a safety thing than something fun - hope that's okay! When I first moved out, I was kind of terrified of being on my own. Just because - what if something DID happen? I'm not very strong, self-defense is not something I'm known for >.< So I got one of these. Just to make me comfortable when I was at home.

I've also got mace for when I'm walking the dog at night, and a baseball bat under my bed. Because being overprepared is better than being caught off guard, right? :)

Congrats on the apartment! That's awesome :) You're a big girl now!

And even hang a cheap, thick rug to the back of the door using those sticky hooks. Also, get a security bar for your door if he’s barging in. And maybe try to break the vacuum somehow, lol!

Lots of good advice here.
Don't ignore your instincts, we have them for a reason.

You have every right to feel like you're in danger, everything about what you describe is strange and part of a pattern.

Go to the police, if no other reason than to add legitimacy to any complaints you make in the future.

Tell your ex to sack up.

Buy a security bar for any entrance to your home: https://www.amazon.com/Master-Lock-265DCCSEN-Dual-Function-Security/dp/B0002YUX8I

In the future, maybe get a "door lock" like this? It seems like a good way to keep the uninvited from entering your space module.

u/likebuttermilk · 2 pointsr/fffffffuuuuuuuuuuuu

Get one of these. Not very expensive, easy to use and remove.

u/mrjd · 2 pointsr/TwoXChromosomes

Hardware stores also sell door braces that fit under the doorknob and make the door harder to swing open. It's a tough to describe but this Amazon link has an example photo. You could potentially buy them, use them until you move out and return them to the store.

How old is the building? Modern doors are basically thin sheets of wood built like corrugated cardboard (Think Ikea desktops). I'm a male, 130lb and broke thru one pretty easily (It's ok, I work in construction). Older door are more solid.

u/gholam13 · 2 pointsr/AskReddit

disgruntledcop is very right... I have have had my home burgled and they returned a year later only to find it wasn't as easy.

The easiest steps are have a home alarm system installed (motion sensor is a good idea), get a safe and put away items that you really don't need laying around (jewelery/valuables that you don't actually use day to day) and generally make you house a pain in the ass to snatch and grab items.

Mounted and locked TVs are good (who needs to remove of move a TV usually). Privacy tinting on your windows will help in a few way like making it hard for someone to look into your windows to scope you out and also on the last attempt at breaking into my home it took them about 10-20 hits just to make a hand sized hole in the window. This was because the film keeps the window together rather then just shattering into pieces.

Another great thing to have is a camera system that you can access via a smart phone or web browser. Get one with a DVR so if something happens you can see events through out the day.

Also, remember that anything you have in the house are just items... your family are more valuable then anything you own. Make sure your family is more away of there surroundings as they come home to your entry. Cut back bushes to make it impossible for people to hide.

Other then that, do not over do it... you can't live in a bunker, all you can really do is make your home less of a target then others.

good luck

Wow! This is infuriating. I am already paranoid and I haven't even had a bad apartment experience yet (fingers crossed!).

There are these locks on Amazon that are an addition to the regular locks, something like this:

https://www.amazon.com/Rishon-Enterprises-Inc-RE1001-Scratched/dp/B00186URTY/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1510271344&sr=8-4&keywords=locks+apartment

My landlords also use something like this on the backdoor:

https://www.amazon.com/Master-Lock-265DCCSEN-Dual-Function-Security/dp/B0002YUX8I/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1510271454&sr=8-2&keywords=locks+apartment

Stay safe everyone!

u/Mayor_of_Dunkin · 2 pointsr/homedefense

These are simple but effective as deterrents, so long as she holds herself to install it each time they are in for the day/night. Depending on how much “modification” you can do to the apt, these are even better.

u/stacer12 · 2 pointsr/LetsNotMeet

You need to notify your building manager so they can reissue your (and possibly everyone else's) key card. And insist that he install a deadbolt on your door. You can also buy an actual security bar that will brace your door from inside, so it can't even be opened. Much safer than the stool. Here's what I'm talking about: https://www.amazon.com/Master-Lock-265DCCSEN-Dual-Function-Security/dp/B0002YUX8I

Edit: missed the part that you called the building manager. Good! But seriously, insist on a deadbolt.

u/vff · 1 pointr/lockpicking

In that case, just buy one of these (or a similar, competing product) and don’t worry about it.

u/carhop79 · 1 pointr/vancouver

Get a security bar for inside your room when you're in there. It's not permanent and won't do any damage but no one will be able to open the door from the outside.

Get a security bar and use it every night. If you have windows that are easily accessible via bad guys, get something like this.

u/girlofthewoods · 1 pointr/Anxiety

I have always had similar problems when living alone, but it really spiked a few months ago. I was used to having my boyfriend around, but he moved to our new city about 5 months before I could, so I was alone every night. It didn't help that I was living in a really old, creepy house in a bad part of town. Break ins were common, and I lived in a first floor apartment. I would lie awake at night listening to every sound, convinced someone was about to break in. I'd stay up until 2, 3, 4 in the morning, all panicked, planning how I would escape the house if someone came in. I started getting sleep paralysis all the time when I did fall asleep because I was so stressed out.

What helped me was to not feed those scary thoughts. I stopped reading creepy shit on Reddit, watching scary movies and tv shows, basically anything that I felt was triggering. I started running my fan at bedtime, or turning on a talk radio station at a low volume to drown out outside noises (this helped immensely). I allowed myself to double check one time that the doors and windows were locked (this took a little more discipline). Then, for my own peace of mind, I got a couple of things for extra security--a door brace and some pepper spray that I kept in the nightstand. The key was really telling myself that I had done everything in my power to make the apartment safe, and anything else that happened was now out of my control. It's not easy, but it worked. I can actually go to bed without checking every closet now.

u/clear831 · 1 pointr/HomeImprovement

https://www.amazon.com/Master-Lock-265DCCSEN-Dual-Function-Security/dp/B0002YUX8I Maybe use that and then find a peg that can go through all 4 holes and lock it that way?

u/rmeas002 · 1 pointr/Anxiety

It might be a bit much to give into anxiety this much, but this is a door brace that could give you peace of mind. I've actually got one for my place because I'm on the ground floor.

u/iammandalore · 1 pointr/homesecurity

Replacing the screws goes a decent way to making the door harder to break in. Most screws used be default are only enough to hang the weight of the door for the hinges, and enough to simply surface-mount hardware like the strike plate. Replacing screws in the hinges and strike plates with longer ones that can reach the door frame significantly increase the force needed to break the door in.

For while you're home, something like this can go even farther to securing the door, but it obviously can't be used while you're away.

u/rountrey · 1 pointr/PostCollapse

Guns, yes, be sure to follow the laws of your state, and practice, practice, practice.

I don't think barb wire is going to work out well, that brings attention to yourself. But you can add reinforcement to your door like a door security bar, I've seen them at Lowe's, too.

There are also bullet resistant windows out there but you said you didn't have a lot of buying power. Next best thing would be some heavy curtains, if you cant make the windows stronger at least make it so someone can't see inside. The thicker curtains or multiple layers prevent shadows from coming through so someone can't see where you are in the house. Iron bars on the windows might be possible, but you might not want to make your house look like a crack den, although, I have heard of windows that have the iron bars between the glass panes and painted white where if someone does break the window they can only get their head in.

Next, if you dont already have one, is an alarm system. Even if it's just one from Radio Shack that doesn't have monitoring with it, at least you will know if someone is trying to come in. Make sure that all the sensors have a battery back up.

u/villdyr · 1 pointr/LetsNotMeet

Just a note for anyone who might be able to use it: You can get a locking (exterior) doorknob from home depot for under $20, and all you need to install it is a screwdriver. It takes less than five minutes even if you aren't mechanically inclined. We had a nightmare 3-story townhouse with like fifty potential entrances so I replaced every doorknob in the place to make it harder to get in from the garage or main-floor sliding door. It was really fast. Also hd (or Lowe's) will rekey them for you if they're compatible with your other locks, so you can choose which keys to use with which locks.

Also there are more temporary things on Amazon like travel/hotel locks and door bars, if you don't want to risk getting in trouble w landlord. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0002YUX8I/ They are just less robust, I think, and take more vigilance.

u/CountessMearcair · 1 pointr/raisedbynarcissists

It sounds like your NMom expected this to happen or it's happened before which is worrying. Please remember that none of this is your fault! And while you did mention you want to protect your brothers, you might have to make a very difficult decision to include the police, especially if this escalates (there is also a chance he might try to molest your brothers).

For now, I would highly suggest talking to a school counselor (not sure how old you are) or calling child/adult sexual abuse services hotline. It's better to find out your options so that instead of simply being quiet because you are afraid, you can plan. Confide in a friend so that if you need a place to quickly escape too, you can already have that backup. Start planning your escape when you feel comfortable doing so and make sure to get all of your papers (social, ID's, medical etc.)

As for the very right now, improvise a lock using heavy furniture. If you can buy a security bar (https://www.amazon.com/Master-Lock-Security-Adjustable-265DCCSEN/dp/B0002YUX8I/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1521393211&sr=8-6&keywords=door+stopper) or buy a door knob with a lock and install it (I did mine just by learning from Youtube).

u/radioactive_muffin · 1 pointr/homesecurity

Reinforcement lock or the ol' fashioned bar stop are prob best bets for an apartment. The screw holes will be hidden in the door frame so probably won't be noticed on inspection if/when you remove it. The bar is a classic...both only work if you remember to set them though.

u/youcantseeme0_0 · 1 pointr/TheGirlSurvivalGuide

In addition to the other suggestions about changing the locks, consider getting a door brace security bar too. It should give you the time you need for police to arrive, if someone ever tries to force entry while you're home.

u/WeepingSomnabulist · 1 pointr/JUSTNOFAMILY

:( sorry. I meant to add that if you did get into a serious confrontation, it would be best to run screaming from the house since sometimes dudes can get really angry and double up on their efforts.

Taking doors off the hinges is /r/raisedbynarcissists territory, it's very common for parents with personality disorders like narcissism to refuse privacy to their kids.

in the worst situation there is this door blocker:
https://www.amazon.com/Master-Lock-Security-Adjustable-White/dp/B0002YUX8I/ref=asc_df_B0002YUX8I/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=198057875972&hvpos=1o5&hvnetw=g&hvrand=3498565974050103574&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9060261&hvtargid=pla-404125275287&psc=1

there are several variations and some are pretty cheap but work surprisingly well. if your room is on a 2nd floor you may want to fix up a rope ladder so you can get out quick.

I am so sorry! We had a break in right after we closed on our house. Thankfully we hadn’t moved much in, but I totally understand that feeling of being violated.

We got ADT and Ring doorbell and flood lights. We’ve been very happy with ADT, we installed Ring ourselves.

We also got window and door bullies that I highly recommend. Links below:

Did you borrow your neighbors lawnmower and forget to give it back lol?

Get a metal door.

Also remove the existing screws from the hinges attached to the door jam and use 3 inch screws. Otherwise, it doesn't matter how great a door or lock you have. If they kick hard enough, either the hinges will rip out of the door jam or the entire door jam itself will come out. Same thing for the striker plate.

I would google "how to secure a door" and make sure there are no weak points.

There are better devises out there though.

Another very simple way to improve security would be to install a motion sensor spotlight for nighttime.

This is how apt managers scam you. Also there is the fact that there are many renters who do DIY and ruin things.

This would be helpful.

Also dont worry about deadbolt. The real issue is the door frame. No matter how strong is your dead bolt, if the door frame gives up, you are soup.

u/tabaholic · 1 pointr/indianapolis

A friend had her back door kicked in during the day. Robbers took all her electronics. The responding police officer told her to get a door jam bar. He said the door wouldn't budge then. Since I rarely go in and out of my back garage door, that is what I did. I have a camera on my front doors and motion lights surrounding the house.

I just came across this in another post: http://www.amazon.com/Master-Lock-265DCCSEN-Dual-Function-Security/dp/B0002YUX8I

I wonder how effective this is? Looks cheap and not very masculine (lol), but if it works good it might be worth a shot.

I like the idea of Door Jamb Armor. Has anyone had experience with that Armor Concepts one?

u/chalk46 · 1 pointr/Damnthatsinteresting

Here's a link to the actual product. Personally, if you're really worried, you're probably better off with something like this (although it's not super portable).

u/talentzero · 1 pointr/homedefense

Hopefully it was just some drunk neighborhood kid accidentally wandering into the wrong yard, but trying a doorknob to see if it's unlocked is a really common way thieves get into homes. We recently installed Door Armor (it's on Amazon) that basically makes your door very difficult to kick down. If you don't want to commit to that (because it does drill into your doorjamb) you could look into a security bar which just jams itself under your doorknob to secure the door. It won't stop someone forever, but it will slow them down enough (and cause them to make enough noise) that they will likely abandon.

Also, it's a good idea alert all your neighbors so everyone is paying attention (which is probably what your neighbor was thinking, so good for her).

u/InactiveBlacksmith · 1 pointr/HomeImprovement

I recommend consulting with your landlord to see what modifications you can make. You may find more help on r/homedefense. Off of the top of my head, you could trying using a door security bar like this. But read the reviews and see if there are better security bars out there.

u/midnightblade · 1 pointr/homeautomation

Maybe you could get security film on your windows? A camera isn't really going to stop someone from breaking it. It'll help alert you when someone does and provide evidence to help catch them but that doesn't mean you'll be able to keep your things safe. They could easily run away and pawn it before police are able to catch them.

I think if you're worried about safety in your home and concerned about people getting in you'll want to go low tech. Maybe a door security bar for when you're at home? Link

u/bigfangirl · 1 pointr/raisedbynarcissists

This isn't a perfect solution but there are temporary ways to lock your door. Products like this door security bar can help you lock yourself into your room without leaving a permanent locking mechanism.
Master Lock 265DCCSEN Dual-Function Security Bar https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0002YUX8I/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_uioFybQT1JHDF
You would have to hide the bar when it's not in use, but perhaps if you do what someone else suggested and get a closet that locks, you could keep the bar in there?
I hope this helps! Good luck.

u/roraima_is_very_tall · 1 pointr/tifu

boy, isn't it creepy to know someone has been in your place? I've had one break-in which I discovered after coming home from a party and yeah, you gotta wonder are they still here?

And then a maintenance man in the building I live in was coming in to my place in an apparent attempt to scare me in to moving out. Too cowardly to attack me personally but had zero issues with coming in to my apartment and leaving evidence behind that he was here. Bizarre and very scary.

edit, now I use a buddy bar - essentially this thing - when I'm at home, usually even during the day. It's prevented maintenance from coming into my place at least once when I was in the other room and didn't hear the guy knocking.
