There's the Metal Gear Solid Legacy Collection. Includes MG, MG2, MGS1, MGS1:VR, MGS2, MGS3, MGS:PW, and MGS4.
> Edit: $75 on Amazon

Metal Gear Solid has six mainline canon installments (technically eight but I'm disregarding the NES games since I don't think they're worth playing and they're both covered in Metal Gear Solid) that spans fifty years and covers the arcs of many characters.

Most the games have some sort of deep narrative that run throughout the entire game but the stories for the most part are very good, albeit a bit convoluted on your first play through. The games sort of flop between very serious story telling and self parody, meaning they never taken themselves too seriously and they're full of little quirks and complete fiction.

The gameplay is fantastic too, the only one I'd say that has aged noticeably is the first one but the second Solid game made massive improvements to gameplay that stayed with the series and was added onto.

It's one of my favorite franchises and Sons of Liberty and Snake Eater are two of my all time favorite games, definitely worth a shot if you haven't already played them. If you have a PS3 then you can get the Legacy Collection which contains all the canon entries except for Phantom Pain but it's on PS3 as well.

u/social_gamer · 27 pointsr/GameDeals

I was about to purchase this as "The Definitive Experience" sounded more like the PS3 version of Metal Gear Solid: Legacy Collection with Ground Zeroes + MGS:V and then was let down with it only being 2 games an their dlc.

u/[deleted] · 25 pointsr/truegaming

The Legacy Collection comes out next month (July 9th). I'd wait and get that if I was you.

It includes Metal Gear, Metal Gear 2, Metal Gear Solid 2: HD Edition, Metal Gear Solid 3: HD Edition, Metal Gear Solid 4 Trophy Edition and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker HD Edition.

And you should play all of them in order. Maybe skip the first 2 if you're not big on retro games.

Edit: Just noticed it doesn't come with the first MGS. You can pick that up on PSN like you planned and play it while you're waiting for the Legacy Collection to come out.

Edit 2: Actually, it comes with a voucher for MGS1. So it's up to you if you want to wait or not.

u/OscarExplosion · 17 pointsr/patientgamers

Get the Metal Gear Solid Legacy Collection

it has every major Metal Gear Solid (1-4) game you would need to play besides Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain. Otherwise if you can't find the Legacy Collection get the HD Collection. Keep in mind though if you do get the HD collection instead you will have to seperatly get the original Metal Gear Solid (It's on PSN for PS3) and Metal Gear Solid 4.

Play them in order:

  • Metal Gear Solid

  • Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty

  • Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater

  • Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots

  • Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker

  • Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes

  • Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

Some of the best games ever made

u/cocobandicoot · 10 pointsr/PS3

A bit of a novel, but I hope you find this helpful, OP.

First, to comment on what happened on your call with Microsoft: maybe it's possible you just got one of the really bad reps? But then again, they got a supervisor involved and they still wouldn't just fix the situation for you? Especially seeing as you hadn't even used your subscription... that is pretty ridiculous. Well, I'm confident that you'll find the PlayStation experience an enjoyable one.

-----

Honestly, this is probably the best time to try out a PS3. We're closing out on this generation of consoles and some of the best games of the last few years have been PlayStation exclusives. Especially if you've been using an Xbox 360 this whole time, you're about ready to meet a whole new world of incredible titles.

Quick edit: Just wanted to clarify... I'm including links to Amazon just as an easy way for you to learn more about individual titles. But just as /u/undeadwolfy mentioned:

>You can buy most of these pre-owned at a decent price. Some are digital so they're not much cheaper but still great.

So first and foremost, I highly recommend anything by Naughty Dog -- they are arguably the best developer in the entire industry right now. They released four titles on the PS3: Uncharted 1, 2 & 3 (each game is a must-play), and the absolute masterpiece that is The Last of Us. You've probably heard plenty of praise for The Last of Us (and it is well deserved), but I would recommend saving the best for last. It's such an awesome game that, after completing it, nothing else I played interested me anymore. It took like a month to get back into the gaming groove, so I'd save that 'til after you beat the Uncharted trilogy. It's that good.

Aside from that, there are some other great titles I'd highly recommend. I don't know what kind of games you're into, so I'll just list all those that I've liked, personally:

  • Metal Gear Solid saga (MGS 1-3 were released on PS1 & PS2, but they've since been rereleased in HD for PS3, alongside MGS 4).

  • Heavy Rain (A very story driven game, where the choices you make can drastically affect the storyline. Plus... boobs.)

  • Beyond Two Souls (Brand new, just came out. Similar to Heavy Rain in its execution -- story driven.)

  • God of War trilogy (Awesome, mature platformer. The first two games were for PS2, but were released in HD alongside GOW3 on PS3. Also has boobs.)

  • Little Big Planet 1 or 2 (A great couch multiplayer side scroller. Lots of fun, more of a kids game... or a game to play with drunk adults.)

  • Infamous 1 & 2 (An interactive comic book. An "open world" platformer that lets you shoot lightning from your hands. Has a cool element where you can choose to be good or evil.)

Not to mention plenty of other great exclusives (Rachet & Clank series, Resistance trilogy, Valkyria Chronicles and more) and the tons of PS1 and PS2 games on the PlayStation Store for cheap, playable on your PS3 if you want to go old school. (Not to mention the many PS2 games being rereleased for PS3 in HD glory... I'd recommend Shadow of the Colossus, which happens to be free for PlayStation Plus members this month... hint hint.) Of course, all the multiplatform games are also here (Battlefield, Bioshock, Call of Duty, Grand Theft Auto, etc.).

  • Oh, did I mention the PS3's online multiplayer is free?
  • And if you've got Netflix, you don't need to pay Sony a cent to watch it (unlike a certain other console's "Gold" requirement).

That said, however, if you really want to jump in the game, PlayStation Plus is worth every penny -- a ton of free games each month (and we're talking major titles, in addition to a handful of indies), plus a large variety of other system-enhancing features and discounts. And if you're looking at getting a PS4, getting PS+ is a no-brainer. For one, it is required for online multiplayer on the PS4 (no such requirement on the PS3, but hey, they've got to make their money somehow). But what's awesome is that one PS+ account will work across both the PS3 & PS4, and enable you to get free games for each console for as long as you are a subscriber, with free games on the PS4 appearing on day one.

Welcome to the new age. Now cue up some Imagine Dragons and get ready for a freaking awesome experience. We're glad to have you.
u/villanx1 · 10 pointsr/ShouldIbuythisgame

I'm not going to recommend multiplatform games as I'm unsure of whether or not you have a 360/Wii/etc.

  1. Valkyria Chronicles - (Mostly) Turn-based strategy game, with RPG elements. Gets pretty hard (at least for me) decently long.

  2. Metal Gear Solid: The Legacy Collection - Pretty much every canon Metal Gear game. Stealth-Action at it's finest with an insane story and cast of characters. Includes the HD remasters of MGS2 and 3.

  3. Yakuza 4 - RPG/Brawler set in a fictionalized Kabukichō (a well known Red light district in Tokyo). You can spend your time cracking skulls, doing random favors for people, playing mahjong, or chatting it up with a hostess.
u/erikb42 · 10 pointsr/Games

No, because there is more to it than story. Over the series Kojima has done a ton of 4th wall breaking and the games are quite self-aware. Honestly, you should pick up the Legacy Pack and give them all a quick run through. The games aren't terribly long, but do have a decent amount of replay ability.

u/nohpex · 9 pointsr/patientgamers

I was going to say Final Fantasy 10 or 12, but it's hilarious how much MGS takes the cake.

Hey, OP. Get the Legacy Collection for
PS3
so you can play most of the series for cheap!

u/FreshPaprikazzz · 8 pointsr/metalgearsolid

I've said to this every newbie and I will say it to you as well: just play the games. Reading wikis or other peoples' plot summaries just doesn't work with Metal Gear games -- it really doesn't. You just have to experience it by yourself.

If you want the easy but not as effective way to learn what's going on - sure - you can watch the Digital Graphic Novels or cutscenes from YouTube, but I'd personally just lock you in a bunker with the Legacy Collection and let you out once you've finished the whole series.

u/Nikazio · 7 pointsr/metalgearsolid

I don't know if i understood correctly but if you don't know wich games are for each console

On the PS1 you can only play MSG1

On the PS2 you can play MGS2 and 3, and if you have the "Subsistence" version of 3 it also includes the original Metal Gear 1 and 2.

Or you can sell everything and get a PS3 with the Legacy collection wich includes Metal Gear, Metal Gear 2, Metal Gear Solid 2: HD Edition, Metal Gear Solid 3: HD Edition, Metal Gear Solid 4 Trophy Edition and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker HD Edition. It also includes Metal Gear Solid 1 and VR Missions voucher codes.

u/liquidhot · 7 pointsr/PS3

From the Amazon page: The Legacy Collection includes Metal Gear, Metal Gear 2, Metal Gear Solid 2: HD Edition, Metal Gear Solid 3: HD Edition, Metal Gear Solid 4 Trophy Edition and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker HD Edition

I don't think so, in July the Metal Gear Solid Legacy collection is going to be released that includes MGS 1,2,3,4, Peace Walker, VR missions, and the original Metal Gear 1 and 2 for $50. You'll get a lot more bang for your buck and can experience the entire story.

Metal Gear Solid: The Legacy Collection

Includes:

-Metal Gear (1995)
-Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake (1999)
-Metal Gear Solid (2005)
-Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (Substance Edition / HD) (2007 - 2009)
-Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (Subsistence Edition / HD) (1964)
-Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (PS3 Exclusive) (2014)
-Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker (1974)

Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes / The Phantom Pain are sold separately but aren't PS3 exclusive.

The games here range from 1987 to 2010, sorted by release order. Guns of the Patriots is the finale to the franchise even though Revengeance takes place in 2018 but that title isn't canon.

It took me roughly ~2 weeks to get through all of them. On average, a Metal Gear Solid game takes ~8-12 hours to beat on your first ever run. The first 2 are a bit shorter.

---

The franchise is a must play. These games started, revolutionized, and essentially built the stealth franchise, with Ground Zeroes being the closest thing we have to a stealth simulator. Also Kojima wrote one of the greatest stories in gaming history.

u/Theinternationalist · 6 pointsr/GameDeals

That said, 4 is no great shakes (I found it...aggravating after playing 2 and 3; I've never played 1 but I know the plot) and, if the Legacy Collection has VOUCHERS for MGS1 and Virtual Missions. If you don't care much for Metal Gear, get the HD collection; if you want the full experience, pick up the Legacy one.

u/TGMais · 5 pointsr/PS4

> MGS 4 if you've played the series before. If not, consider giving it a try.

FYI, Metal Gear Solid: The Legacy Collection comes out tomorrow.

It includes:

  • Metal Gear
  • Metal Gear 2
  • Metal Gear Solid + MGS VR Missions (Voucher for download)
  • Metal Gear Solid 2: HD Edition
  • Metal Gear Solid 3: HD Edition
  • Metal Gear Solid 4: Trophy Edition
  • Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker HD Edition
  • 2 Upscaled "HD" Graphic Novels
  • 100 page Artbook recounting the series history

    Price: 50 fucking dollars

Fortunately for you, they're releasing the MGS Legacy collection soon, which includes every major game in the series. You could probably pick it up and finish it by the time MGSV hits. Check it out.

u/azrael6947 · 5 pointsr/gaming

Okay, I'll keep this brief.

You started out good. MGS 3 is the earliest game in the series story wise. On console Ground Zeroes is it's sequel, there is a few handheld titles in between MGS 3 and Ground Zeroes.

In short the story is and SPOILERS-SOMEWHAT in short, about two key groups who endevour to fulfil The Boss' final wish, to have a untied world. The Patriots seek to create this world through control, their enemies seek to create it through freedom.

The Patriots are an example of a shadow government, as they run the USA and control pretty much everything, add WMDs, nanomachines, AI and supersolders as plot points to the entire story, and it makes for one very enjoyable ride.

In their attempts to create the perfect world they embark on a complex cloning program to create the perfect soldier to fullfiil this goal. This is where Solid Snake comes from. Very few characters work directly for The Patriots, many are unknowing agents and the rest are usually unwilling, and are held hostage by some means.

The Metal Gear are a series of bipedial tanks, caipable of launching WMDs from any terrain or fullfilling some over goal such as recon or targeted strikes. In most games the Metal Gear serves as the final boss or close to being the final boss.

In buying Ground Zeroes now you wont miss a hell of a lot, Ocelot appears in it along with Snake. Most of the other characters are from the two handheld games in between MGS3 and MGS5:GZ, those two games are Peace Walker and Portable Ops. You can get every MGS game to date (aside from Portable Ops) in the Legacy Collection: http://www.amazon.com/Metal-Gear-Solid-Collection-Playstation-3/dp/B00CTKHXFO

u/runtheplacered · 4 pointsr/Games

$43 on Amazon. Even cheaper on the marketplace. $50 at Gamestop. Not doubting you, but I don't think I've ever seen it go for $100. Maybe they started producing more copies after they noticed a demand, kind like like Xenoblade Chronicles? I don't know.

I believe OP only has the MGS HD collection so he only has MGS 2, 3 and Peace Walker. OP if you're reading this and have a PS3 i highly recommend the MGS legacy Collection.

It has all the games you could possibly need, including the MSX games but they're not required for a playthrough, but just as UsoInSpace said, best play it in release order: 1->2->3->4 and then peace walker since it's the latest one.

u/kautau · 4 pointsr/Bossfight

There’s also a large remaster set for ps3 that has a ton of the games (and a voucher for digital versions of some others)

u/ArmyDude956 · 4 pointsr/smashbros

There are actually PC ports of both MGS1 and MGS2, but they are pretty dang old.

MGS1

MGS2

However, here's how I recommend doing it.

Get The Twin Snakes for Gamecube. It's a remake of the first one with totally redone cutscenes, redone voice acting, and different music. The music is nowhere near the level of the first one, it just doesn't sound right. But other than the music, I think it's the best version.

Then get the HD collection, if you have a 360 or PS3. This includes HD remakes of MGS2, MGS3, and MGS Peace Walker. Peace Walker was a PSP exclusive before and it's 100x better on console.

I also recommend getting MGS3 on 3DS. It's the best version in my opinion. Use the Circle Pad Pro, though.

You can get MGS4 on PS3 or on PS4 with Sony's PSNow thing, but that's only a rental.

MGS5 Ground Zeroes and Phantom Pain are both coming out on PC.

Or you can just get the Legacy collection which has literally every Metal Gear game to 2012, and it includes the HD editions. It doesn't have The Twin Snakes though.

u/gotta_ban_them_all · 3 pointsr/GameDeals

basically a PS3 and MSG Legacy Collection get you everything pre-MSGV.

If you want to play Portable Ops (technically canon but not really necessary) you can emulate it on PC with PPSSPP.

u/Bopsybops · 3 pointsr/metalgearsolid

Lots of nanomachines and badass battle tanks. Philosophy and shit. Buy a PS3 and the Legacy Collection + Metal Gear Rising, and that's everything.

Edit: I forgot to mention Ground Zeroes. You'll need that, too.

u/KyuubiReddit · 3 pointsr/gamingsuggestions

for Metal Gear Solid, you can start with Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes on GameCube (will also play on a Wii), then get the Metal Gear Solid: The Legacy Collection on PS3 to play MGS 2, 3 and 4.

EDIT: Oh I just noticed you only have the PS3 and PS2. You'll have to get the PS1 version of MGS on the PSN.

u/xxdofxx · 3 pointsr/patientgamers

Just to clear up any confusion (because when I went to buy these games 6 months ago I got it messed and up wasted $10.) The Legacy Collection includes The HD Collection, MGS IV, and a PSN code for MGS1 (note this ISN'T the Twin Snakes version, which is Gamecube exclusive and is much better in almost every way. So much so, that IMO you should just watch a long play on youtube instead of playing the original PS1 version.)

So if you DON'T have MGSIV and want to play/experience the whole series, absolutely get the more complete Legacy Collection. Only buy the stand alone HD Collection if you already have a copy of MGSIV and are going to watch Twin Snakes (MGS1)on youtube (which I recommend either way.)

u/serosis · 3 pointsr/PS3

For game collections; The God of War Saga, Infamous 1 & 2, and the Metal Gear Solid Legacy Collection.

Plus the endless amount of classics you can download from the store, like Shadows of the Colossus and Final Fantasy X HD. There are some interesting platformers too like Limbo and The Cave.

u/oiskaio · 3 pointsr/patientgamers

I'd recommend the Legacy Collection if you can find it for fairly cheap. It keeps going in and out of print it seems.

LINK

u/tremens · 3 pointsr/PS3

Hey mate. I posted this over in another thread, but it's just up your alley. Also of note right now, is that Target has a 2 for $25 sale right now - Of that list I'd recommend Ico/Colossus HD, Twisted Metal, Little Big Planet, and GT5 - I'm not going to include inFAMOUS 2, solely because you can grab the Collection for around $20 if you look for it, but that's the only reason. Also, Target was doing a Buy 2 Get 1 on many titles online (and all titles in-store) but I'm not sure that's still going on.

>In the same boat. Here's the list I've compiled so far, targeting bang-for-buck and PS3/console exclusives mostly, since I already have an extensive PC collection. In no particular order:

Last of Us (this is a no brainer, buy it immediately.)

Heavy Rain

God of War Saga Collection, God of War Ascension

Uncharted Greatest Hits Dual Pack, Uncharted 3

InFAMOUS Collection

Jax and Daxter Collection

The Sly Collection

Kingdom Hearts 1.5 HD Remix

ICO/Shadow if the Colussus HD Collection

Journey Collector's Edition

Final Fantasy X HD

Tales of Symphonia Chronicle's

Red Dead Redemption GOTY Edition

Capcom Essentials Collection

Little Big Planet 2 Special Edition

Two Worlds

>Everything listed here can be had for less than $30, most around $20, and many of them are 2-5 games per purchase and set you into a franchise.

>If you find Metal Gear Solid Legacy Collection for around $50, BUY IT. Otherwise, probably best to skip it. Tough series to jump into around 5.

>And whatever you do, get PlayStation Plus immediately. If you buy a year it works out to a few dollars per month (newegg had a year for $40 recently on eBay) and you get 2-3 PS3 games every month, AND you get Vita, PS4, and PSP games. "BUY" THESE TOO! They are free and accessible as long as you have a PS+ account once you "tag" them to your account. If you every buy a PSP, Vita, or PS4 on the cheap you will have an instant and extensive back catalog of games ready to go.

>Oh, and Uncharted 3 is currently free on PS+ but expiring soon!

EDIT: Amazon has the Metal Gear Solid Legacy Collection for $55 ($60 shipped) currently. I thought I had a deal on it for $45, but the reseller cancelled it after I posted it on here saying that had an "inventory error" (they showed they had numerous copies in three of their brick and mortar stores and were out of stock at one, so I find that hard to believe they didn't have at least the copy I ordered - more like they got flooded with 30-40+ orders at once and realized they were selling it pretty far below the going rate.)

u/StNowhere · 3 pointsr/GameDeals

If you have a PS3, grab the Legacy Collection. It has MG1 & 2 (the old MSX games), MGS2, MGS3, MGS4, and Peace Walker. Also if you buy a new copy, it should come with a download code for MGS1.

From there, all you're missing is Ground Zeroes, and Phantom Pain.

  1. Metal Gear Series: 3rd Person tatical espionage series where you go behind enemy lines to sabotage/defeat the enemy. The Legacy Collection is a steal for 49$ and includes 8 games (the later games reward no kill play throughs). Instead of killing choose to use tranq gun and tranq sniper rifle, the game even rewards you for completing it without killing anyone. Even more bonus if you do it unseen. (If you own a PS3 and have never played this you missing out)

  2. Batman Arkham Asylum/City: I downloaded the demo of Asylum before the game came out not expecting anything and being completely blown away by the engaging controls and excellent story. Batman does not kill enemies but rather disables them and stealth is key to survival. There is a reason people talk about this game and it has such high reviews. It is a Super Hero/Comic book game done RIGHT!

You can order new from Amazon for $50, re-stocking on April 12th...

http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B00CTKHXFO/ref=dp_olp_all_mbc?ie=UTF8&condition=all

Edit: as of 4/11, the listing for the next shipment has been dropped, and prices have come back up.

If I wanted to play the whole story from the beginning would I get the legendary edition on amazon? http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00CTKHXFO/ref=ox_sc_sfl_image_2

u/Rumptiddliey · 2 pointsr/metalgearsolid

You can get a used PS3 pretty cheap now and the MGS legacy collection is under $45 on Amazon

u/mxwlln · 2 pointsr/PS4

As stated before, your best bet if you don't have a PS3 is to check if the HD collection is available for PS Now, and if you're willing to pay the price and if your connection is good, you're set.

There are two collections available for the PS3, though.

  • HD Collection: Includes Metal Gear, Metal Gear 2, MGS2 HD, MGS3 HD, MGS Peace Walker HD
  • Legacy Collection: Includes all the above + MGS4 + download code for MGS1 and MGS VR Missions if you buy it new + some artwork that I don't care for but a lot of people do so you might like it.

For anyone else reading who had a similar question, my choice would be Legacy Collection since it's $43 on Amazon right now. I personally don't care for MGS4 or the Ashley Wood artbook that's included but for everything that you get, it's a good deal.

    EDIT: A word or two.
u/FaceJP24 · 2 pointsr/metalgearsolid

I just recently purchased the Legacy Collection for 44 dollars on Amazon with the digital graphic novels. Excellent deal.

u/Ptylerdactyl · 2 pointsr/metalgearsolid

>There's not a single disclaimer on the packaging or any online listing stating that MGS1 and the VR missions were a one-time only download code.

Oh

Really?

u/Leuku · 2 pointsr/UnearthedArcana

Ah, I should've provided some explanation for the Cobra doc.

1st, none of the features are in any particular order. They don't have levels yet.

2nd, I was just trying to write down as many things as I could about the Cobras' abilities and how they might translate into 5e mechanics, so there are bound to be overlaps.

I suppose actually knowing what the Cobras can do would be the critical factor, so I highly recommend you purchase yourself a copy of MGS3 (or the Metal Gear Solid Legacy Collection).

MGS3 is a great place to start, because that is game that is the earliest in the chronological order of the game history, set in time prior to all the other game settings!

u/ehgameraz · 2 pointsr/gaming

If you have a PS3, you can pretty much play the entire series with one purchase.

Legacy Collection

This has everything except Portable Ops and MGS5.

u/Blindjanitor · 2 pointsr/PS4

The Legacy Collection on PS3 comes with everything (even codes for MGS1 and VR missions on PSN) pre MGSV. Then just get GZ and TPP on PS4.

u/KingHenryVofEngland · 2 pointsr/ShouldIbuythisgame

What's the best way to play MGS 1 in 2014? I don't own an original PlayStation so it's not like I'm about to buy an old copy of that off ebay or something.

I did find this collection though it seems overpriced and isn't sold directly by amazon.

u/Crowssb · 2 pointsr/metalgearsolid

Don't worry we get this one every few hours.
Technically you can play all of them on ps3 but I'd recommend getting V (Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain) on ps4. The others (mg1, mg2, mgs, mgs2, mgs3, mgs4 and mpw) you can find bundled in metal gear solid legacy collection on ps3 (https://www.amazon.com/Metal-Gear-Solid-Collection-Playstation-3/dp/B00CTKHXFO)

And as a side note portable ops isn't necessary since it's only kinda sorta canon but you can find it in the vita store. Mg rising is an optional spinoff as well.

u/cavemancolton · 2 pointsr/patientgamers

While they are still available, you should really grab the Metal Gear Solid Legacy Collection ($23.99 USD) which includes Metal Gear 1 and 2, as well as Metal Gear Solid, MGS2 HD, MGS3 HD, MGS: Peace Walker HD, and MGS4. If you want to go digital, you could get the HD collection and you would only be losing out on MGS4, which fine since it's easily the worst Metal Gear game.

u/philbertagain · 2 pointsr/PS3

Just order off amazon...
http://www.amazon.com/Metal-Gear-Solid-Collection-Playstation-3/dp/B00CTKHXFO

Then buy revengance... maybe ground demo if you i to that and wait for 5 to be cheap.

u/TheFrag · 2 pointsr/ShouldIbuythisgame

I recommend you to start with this, if you have access to a PS3: Metal Gear Solid: The Legacy Collection

The story is a huge part of MGS and starting with 5 could be quite confusing. I suggest that you play at least MGS3 and Peacewalker first. The events from MGS Ground Zeroes and therefore MGS 5 connect directly to these two games.

If you want to play all games in the chronological order: MGS 3, MGS Peacewalker, MGS Ground Zeroes, MGS 5, Metal Gear, Metal Gear 2, MGS, MGS 2, MGS 4 (There are more games in the series, but these are the main ones. Also, I'm not saying, that this is the best way to play the games, but one possible way.)

u/pleasesendhelpto · 2 pointsr/Megaten

just like da-man said, grab the Legacy Collection and play the games in chronological order, that'll get you up to speed. Even if you don't have much time, the games themselves are relatively short so you can probably beat each of them in two days if you sit down and really play them. I highly recommend it, it's a great franchise, and the spin-off is great too.

u/VladimirZ · 2 pointsr/PS3

Or, if you want to wait a month, you can pick up the Metal Gear Solid Legacy Collection and have everything Metal Gear you need in one pack, including Metal Gear Solid.

u/believingunbeliever · 2 pointsr/Games

There's actually 2 games before Metal Gear Solid itself, titled Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2.

I assume that what you're saying is you can source for the other metal gear titles individually and haven't actually bought or played them yet.

You can still find the original PC game on amazon used here

However you're in luck that the legacy edition for PS3 has been announced and is coming in July which collects the original Metal Gear up to Peacewalker Here

There's more in the series that you can find under the metal gear wikipedia article (metal gear acid, rising and some versions that came out on handheld devices)

u/SaltTheSnail · 2 pointsr/PS3

I'm planning on getting into the MGS series but I'm just waiting for this, it will be cheaper. :)

u/pikec21 · 2 pointsr/gaming

Probably should have been clearer.
http://www.amazon.com/Metal-Gear-Solid-Collection-Playstation-3/dp/B00CTKHXFO

"The Legacy Collection includes Metal Gear, Metal Gear 2, Metal Gear Solid 2: HD Edition, Metal Gear Solid 3: HD Edition, Metal Gear Solid 4 Trophy Edition and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker HD Edition
Also includes Metal Gear Solid 1 and Metal Gear Solid: VR Missions via included voucher codes"

u/input_cords · 2 pointsr/Games

Perhaps, I'm simply pointing but that starting off in MGS5 would be like reading A Dance with Dragons without reading the first 4 Game of Thrones books.

If you own a PS3 you can get all the games (except AC!D and Portable Ops, both of which aren't really important) in a single package.

u/infestedjoker · 2 pointsr/xboxone

I wish we would get this Collection instead since the 360 never got mgs4 and was the reason why i owned a ps3 last gen cause i am a huge MGS fan.

u/Harry3799 · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

If you have a ps3 id grab the legacy collection its pretty cheap. its the way to play every game (And if your new i might just recommend playing 3 and peace walker then wait for MGS V then play the rest. Because 3 and peace walker are the complete beginning of metal gear) If you have any timeline questions i can help. But id say the legacy collection is the best http://www.amazon.com/Metal-Gear-Solid-Collection-Playstation-3/dp/B00CTKHXFO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1408065049&sr=8-1&keywords=legacy+collection+mgs

MGS HD collection is pretty much textbook on how not to make an HD collection. It comes with 2+3 and then a remaster of a handheld game. While Peacewalker is great, the reasons behind why they chose that and not MGS1 are forever a mystery. For a series with such an unorganized chronology, the MGS: HD Collection isn't exactly the most ideal way to get into the series.

The Legacy Collection coming out in July comes with all the titles. However only the ones included in the original HD collection are remade for HD. They give you a redeemable code for MGS 1 on the PSN Marketplace and it's just the game from 1998. I really don't know why they didn't remake every single game in HD. There is most definitely a demand for it, and they know there is too; otherwise they wouldn't be coming out with this collection.

Sorry if I'm ranting here, I'm just a little pissed at how Kojima did his Metal Gear collections.

u/iLuv3M3 · 1 pointr/metalgearsolid

u/Shockum · 1 pointr/gaming

The revamped graphics make things sharper and cutscenes just look great, one could say "movie-esque". Here's an old comparison video. I didn't notice that much difference in MGS, like I did in MGS2.

Gameplay was still the same from before.

Just to be clear, the collection I'm referring to is the Legacy not the HD Collection.

If anything, I'd recommend the Legacy pack. Sure, it's the HD Collection (for the most part). But, it adds in MGS4, MGS, MGS VR Missions. At $50, it's a steal.

The Legacy Collection

It's only $26 on Amazon now. It also comes with digital codes to get MGS1 and VR Missions.

And MGS V is only $16 on PS3 for the Day One version or $25 for PS4.

On that same note, Metal Gear Rising is less than $10, Ground Zeroes is less than $10 on PS3 and less than $17 on PS4.

Basically you can have the entire Metal Gear saga on PS3 for only about $60, the price of
one* brand new game.

You're probably thinking of this collection. The MGS HD collection is the same as the 360, it's got 2, 3, and peace walker.

u/pika9000 · 1 pointr/PS3
  1. Depends on which model you got but the online/store bundles are generally the same

  2. I believe that Final Fantasy 13 is considered to run better (I think). There might be other games, but I don't really know.

  3. The inFamous Collection has downloadable DLC and an extra downloadable 'game.' Metal Gear Solid Legacy Edition has the original PS1 game (MGS 1) as a downloadable code off of PSN. Those are the 2 cases I know where the DLC is downloadable, but I'm pretty sure this applies to all GOTY verssions of games.

  4. It depends on which state you live in (if you live in the US). Do a Google search for your state with 'PSN tax' or something similar.

  5. If you end up buying PS+, you'll find yourself downloading a ton of games pretty quickly. If thats the case, you would probably need to get a new hard drive (a 1TB drive off of Amazon would be most convenient). If you don't get PS+, and don't plan to store music/movies/photos on the machine, of course you won't need it.

  6. If you buy a PS2 game off of the PSN store, it will handle saves on its own. However, if you insert a PS1 disc that you may have, or if you bought a PS1 game off of the PSN store, you'll have to manually install a 'Virtual Memory Card' in the Game Menu on the XMB. Side note, every PS3 is backwards compatible with PS1 discs so if you have a PS1 disc that you want to play put it in.

  7. PS3s are mostly region free (except for a handful of Japanese games). If you want DLC, the PSN account that you use has to match the region the game is from.
For example, I live in the US. If I were to buy a game from England, and I want to buy DLC for it, I would have to create an EU or British account just for the DLC for that game despite the fact that my PS3 and the IP address for my internet is American. Since you said you live in Australia (at least thats what it seems), and the bundle is off of the US Amazon site, you would have to buy the DLC for infamous and uncharted 1+2 off of the US PSN.

  8. If you want to get good deals, go to /r/GameDeals for good discounts. Generally, that subreddit focuses on PC games, but occasionally they'll have some good deals on console games as well.
u/Rc2124 · 1 pointr/starcraft

They released a collection of a bunch of MGS games on the PS3. Not sure if they've done the same for newer consoles. Could be worth looking into. Emulators will always be there if you'd like, of course.

It's MGS2, 3, 4, and Peace Walker bundled on the disc. It is the same HD remakes as the ones on the MGS HD Collection that they released a while back, but this includes MGS4 (which is the same as the normal version of MGS4). They also give you a PSN download code for MGS1 (and the MGS VR Missions), which is not an HD remake or anything. It also has Metal Gear 1 and Metal Gear 2 that you may access from MGS3's menu. I think it comes with some bonus material like an art book and stuff like that.

Note: this is available for PS3-only though, since MGS4 has not been re-made for any other platforms.

I picked up MGS:V at a pawn shop for 20 bucks recently and instead of playing it I shelved it for now because I have never completed a MGS game before (had a brief experience with MGS3 when someone sold it to me with my first PS2 many many years ago) So I picked up the MGS Legacy collection on amazon for 23 bucks (Link) and played the very first Metal Gear! It was extremely frustrating but surprisingly addicting and fun! I never want to hear the soundtrack again but now I'm on to Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake and excited to start Metal Gear Solid finally and be able to play the first one on the Vita!

MGS has always come out on PlayStation platforms first. I know the first one is on PC, and there is a remake made specifically for the GameCube but it started first on PlayStation. Xbox didn't get a version of MGS2 until the Substance releases a year or so later. Until the HD collection 3 was also exclusive to PlayStation I believe.

Back when MGS4 was announced, there were technical reasons why the game was exclusive to the PS3, and I think that still holds true today considering there is an "ultimate" HD collection for PS3 that includes MGS4 and just the normal HD collection for 360 and Vita.

Edit: For those of you curious about what collection I'm talking about, it's this one:
