There are a couple ways of doing it. Either keep your stock radio and use an adapter for apple or if you go aftermarket use an interface.

Mine auto detected the buttons and the head unit and worked right away

u/awwfauxsho · 4 pointsr/CarAV

In order to retain the factory USB you will need this. With most head units, in order for the steering wheel controls to function you will need an adapter. The aux in is a bit more difficult, best bet is to use the aux in on the head unit, otherwise splice into the factory cable, or desolder the connector and add a new cable to the board directly. (The connector subaru uses is proprietary and there isn't a plug and play alternative to my knowledge.)

I don't have a V, rather a Gen3 2013. I had a JVC KWAV61BT put in. Purchased on Amazon for $200 a year ago. Also got from Amazon: Steering Wheel Control Wire, Dash Kit, and Wiring Harness. Had a local shop install it for $100. I probably could have done it myself, but wanted it to look professional. Total cost of the stereo and parts was $275. Looks like Amazon has the DDX-372 for under $300.

I bought this adapter but didn't get it to work, right now I don't have the steering wheel controls:

A couple people have said they may want to try this in the future. Let me post some helpful info for you guys that helped me along the way:

First here is a very helpful image of the wiring for the stereo harness for my 2011 F150 XLT 4DR SuperCab (not super crew) 5.0L V8 with SYNC and with integrated factory radio (see first image in the imgur album linked at the top of this post):

http://imgur.com/0TGvfZj

As you can see, and as I've said a couple times in this post, there is no accessory wire. This is really useful to have as the stereo will know when to turn itself on/off when you insert/remove the key. This post:

http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1118879-2011-wiring-diagram.html

showed me where I could find the accessory wire in the ignition harness. This video is helpful:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S0dM2d9UEtk

in showing how gain access to the ignition harnesses, and at 1:20, he'll unplug the main ignition harness that contained the purple/green accessory cable. Note in the link i posted with the wiring diagram, it shows the accessory wire being in a harness that contains two rows of pins, but I tapped into a purple/green accessory cable that was in a harness that only contained 1 row (see video).

This is the exact trim I purchased:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BG4NNQW/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

which came with mounting brackets (OEM mounting brackets did not fit my new stereo head unit) for the stereo as well as a face plate for the stereo.

I opted to NOT retain my SYNC, as I didn't see the benefit of it. My new stereo unit had bluetooth so there was no need to use sync. This:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00B4PJC9K/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s02?ie=UTF8&psc=1

helps maintain the VOL +/- as well as the Prev/Next buttons on the steering wheel. Sync buttons no longer do anything.

You will need this:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002BEQNE?keywords=chrysler%202002%20antenna&qid=1453138917&ref_=sr_1_1&sr=8-1

which connects the stock FM/AM tuner radio antenna to your new radio. I used this backup cam:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005Q65ZIK/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

which mounts on your license plate. Quick easy and cheap. I did purchase a wireless video transmitter, but it didnt work well, and just ended up running the video cable under the truck (was pretty easy with no lift too), through the firewall, under the steering wheel, and into the center dash. Hope this proves helpful to others!

I have a 2004 Mazda 3s and i went through the same dilemma. Two years ago I bought this receiver: http://support.jvc.com/consumer/product.jsp?archive=true&pathId=133&modelId=MODL029190 and installed it. I wouldn't go back. You can still have your steering wheel controls using this adapter: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00B4PJC9K/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I also used this dash kit: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0014K5VOA/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1 it's not the best looking but it does it's job. I have great sound quality, bluetooth, aux, usb, dvd, couple of apps, and strong pre-outs, and thanks to the adapter my steering wheel controls work great. You have to use specific instructions for the controls adapter that you get from the company's website. I suggest getting a newer headunit though.

u/leroyrichjr · 2 pointsr/CarPlay

I bought one of these for my 2013 Toyota 4Runner and Pioneer AVH-4100NEX. All the buttons work perfectly (including voice/Siri), and there was no config required.

I did a Sony XAV-AX100 + Scosche kit + Metra harness + Metra antenna adapter + another adapter + Metra ASWC-1 Steering Wheel Controls + backup camera.

To be clear, it was kinda a bitch to get it all installed and working but 100% worth it now. Shoutout to /u/bon_temps for the camera link and advice, looks completely factory once installed.

u/kjongenotter · 2 pointsr/nissanfrontier

Here are a couple of pics I took this morning. I was scrambling a bit this morning and couldn't get any more pictures (ended up having to drop it off at the dealership for transmission problems).

For extra's I picked up the following:
Parking Brake Bypass

Steering Wheel Control Interface

Pioneer HDMI Interface Kit

Pyle Backup Camera

I do recall picking up a new surround for around the radio to clean it up. I also had to some minor trims on the top and bottom to make it fit. The mic has a super long wire on it, so I managed to be able to route it along the dashboard up the pillar in to the ceiling. The head unit also ships with a GPS receiver and I left that on top of the dash near the base of the windshield. You will want to track down an Pioneer-Nissan interface kit, I ended up soldering all the connections and it works great. Just far easier if you can find an adapter instead.

So I ordered the Metra Axxess ASWC-1 Universal Steering Wheel Control Interface like you said, but I also ordered this wiring harness. Does it not do the same thing as what you linked?

Metra 70-7552 Radio Wiring Harness For Nissan 2007-Up/Select Subaru 2008-Up

There is a quick install method that should automatically detect default settings. Depending on your head unit, you may need to tweak the settings to get all the buttons to work or work as expected. Read the instructions through a few times. The timing on changing the settings can be fidgety. My mode button and phone buttons did some unexpected things at first.

This is a comment I made to another user :

The amp adapter was buggy and half the time didn't turn on properly, or the left or right speakers would not work. Better sound quality bypassing the amp also.

I used this harness - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000A3THKQ/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Used this for steering wheel controls - https://www.amazon.com/Axxess-ASWC-1-Universal-Steering-Interface/dp/B00B4PJC9K/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1483295363&sr=8-1&keywords=aswc-1

Everything works great now.

One caveat is that the bypass harness does not have the illumination wire for some reason and your radio will not dim when the lights are on unless you hook it up manually. I had to buy the non-JBL harness, and pull the pin for the illumination and put it in the bypass harness.

Overall, this is a pain in the ass install. You have to run the bypass harness all the way behind the back seat. It took me much longer than expected. My truck was a 2004 Double Cab SR5 w/ JBL.

u/fuckflyingpigs · 2 pointsr/prius

I used this steering control adapter when I put a headunit in my 04. Works great, the ability to skip with my phone plugged it is so much more luxurious than I would've thought.

u/Phantom_Absolute · 2 pointsr/SubaruForester

Yes it will work.

You will need this harness:

https://www.amazon.com/20-pin-Subaru-Headunit-Harness-Steering/dp/B01D9K3L44

and this adapter box:

https://www.amazon.com/Axxess-ASWC-1-Universal-Steering-Interface/dp/B00B4PJC9K/

If you get the Metra 70-7552 wiring harness (what crutchfield.com recommends), you won't have the steering wheel control wires and you'd have to tap in to your factory wires.

u/lupohki · 2 pointsr/subaru

You can get a replacement dash piece for use with double DIN size after market head units.

https://www.amazon.com/Metra-95-8907HG-2015-Up-Crosstrek-Vehicles/dp/B018NT4UUA

Get one of these to retain your steering wheel controls.

https://www.amazon.com/Axxess-ASWC-1-Universal-Steering-Interface/dp/B00B4PJC9K

u/bopsman · 2 pointsr/saab

The steering wheel control module that you will need is an ASWC-1. Can be found here if you do not have a authorized seller near by.

https://www.amazon.ca/Metra-ASWC-1-Universal-Steering-Interface/dp/B00B4PJC9K

Also I checked the metraonline site but it seems they don't have a match for our cars. You could give them a call as they may know what fits. That goes for the wiring harness too.

Edit: there's nothing sexy about a GM radio. Sorry.

u/cjk813 · 2 pointsr/CarAV

You should just need an adapter for it. I've never dealt with phone controls but on my 2011 scion tc all I needed to use my steering wheel audio controls with my Pioneer headunit was this.

u/marlovious · 2 pointsr/370z

The370z.com diy section has a bunch of tutorials. It took me about 8 hours to do a total replacement including headunit, door speakers, adding rear speakers, an amp and sub, backup cam, and usb port in the center console. Removing the interior trim and running all the wire was what took the longest.

For just the headunit, you'll need the wire harness, antenna adapter, dash kit, metra steering wheel control adapter, and optionally depending on headunit a micro-bypass parking break switch as some head units disable some things if the parking break isn't on.

Really can you show me where? I looked at the manual and it doesn't seem to have it listed on their. Maybe they forgot?

Here is the adapter he is talking about

u/svtguy88 · 1 pointr/XTerra

So, there is a little extra work involved to wire up the factory amp, but it's pretty straightforward. Basically, what you'll end up doing is using the new head units RCA pre-outs to get the signal to the RF amp (rather than use the head unit's internal amplifier). To do this, you need to get a special adapter to convert the factory harness into an RCA connect (or, you could technically attach RCA connectors to the factory wiring, but that's kind of hard to undo should you ever want to put the stock setup back in).

Anyway, here's what you need:

u/sheetpants · 1 pointr/CarAV

So steering wheel control is a must for me. I've used the buttons on the head unit like less than 10 times. I have this unit https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00B4PJC9K/ref=oh_aui_i_sh_in_o0_img?ie=UTF8&psc=1 . Is there a different one I'll need? It had Kenwood listed at the time, but that was 4 years ago.

u/Buzzlightyr · 1 pointr/genesiscoupe

I just recently installed an aftermarket headunit in mine. Feel free to ask any questions. As for your questions...

  1. Absolutely

  2. Yes, aftermarket headunits don't use the wires from the stock harness that power that adapter. There is an adapter that is supposed to work for it, but I didn't have any luck. I ended up buying a long charging cable for my phone and a long AUX that I ran from the headunit to the armrest cubby and it just comes up through the bottom of it. I can get you pictures if you'd like.

    Here's what I bought:

u/mhuntoon · 1 pointr/CarAudioVideo

ok, I went on Amazon and found the 1400NEX you mentioned and found a backup camera that looks like it will work fairly well. There were a couple of other items recommended - one to control the radio from the steering wheel and the other I'm still not clear on - looks like it might be used to be able to play videos without the car being in park. If that's the case, I'm not interested in that as I don't want distractions for my 16yo daughter nor do I think she'd honestly want it. If that cable does something else that actually makes it useful, please let me know.

Parts I'm considering:

cable of unknown usage (lol) - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00A9AQPUU/ref=ox_sc_act_title_3?smid=A1AUFI5NHGNZ61&psc=1

All for under $365 seems very fair to me. Am I forgetting anything else?

u/feurie · 1 pointr/leaf

On an S only, yes.

I had to buy Nissan wiring harnesses and solder them, I paid for a day of the Nissan service manual to get the wiring diagram for the car, as well as a little black box that could respond to the steering wheel buttons.

All said and done it functioned perfectly, and I had Android Auto that functions better than on my 2018.

I'll try to look up my material list and put it here.

Yes, there's a hard wired remote input, you'd need a steering wheel interface like this one and you're good to go. I've tried several different wheel interfaces and the metra is fantastic. It senses what radio it is, senses what it thinks the car is, then sets everything up. You can reprogram the buttons like I have my source button set as a mute button since I rarely change sources and I'm always a polite person at stop lights by muting my rolling noise machine.

u/mitchtork · 1 pointr/MechanicAdvice

I put in a new head unit, and I had to tap into a couple wires to put one of these in.

u/NOLAFatCat · 1 pointr/CarAV

The stereo went out in my 2006 Mercury Milan, are y'all referring to this?

u/In_Dying_Arms · 1 pointr/CarAV

So here is the wiring for your car, in case you ever need to bypass the factory amp. Harness, Dash kit, and I believe you said you have the universal antenna, but if it's a small input may need this. Not sure if you have steering wheel controls either but if you do and want to keep it pick up this.

As for the radio pick up something with a name to it. Pioneer, Kenwood, JVC, etc. Listed some basic radios but invest a little bit more and you'll have bluetooth capabilities.

Also, remember to measure the visible part of the dash. There’s probably enough room for a double din, but there’s a chance the dash cover is only built to display the small “no Apple Play makes me sad” display. If that’s the case, you’ll have to replace that cover too. The dealership can probably sell you one for $3000 because fuck you, or you can find an aftermarket piece for $50-$75 online.

To keep steering controls, you’ll need this: Metra Axxess ASWC-1 Universal Steering Wheel Control Interface https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00B4PJC9K/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_CpF1Bb09WDVT1

Do yourself a favor and don’t install the new radio until you’ve got that SWC adapter or you’ll have to completely tear the radio back out of the car again to access the proper wires.

Source: I just did this with my new install about 3 months ago.

No problem. Also, good to note that if you want to retain your steering wheel controls (I'd assume yes), you also need another module for that to work with an aftermarket head unit.
