Surface mounting is a lot easier and safer with solder paste and a heat gun. Here's an example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0XENpPtisnM

Note however: "Solder Paste" is not the same thing as "Flux Paste." If you phone around Saskatoon most places will say they have solder paste but they actually have flux paste. Not even B&E carries actual solder paste in the city. I use this stuff: https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00M1RC0IU/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01__o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 the chart on Amazon is incredibly wrong though, the melting point is ~185°C as it would be absolutely pointless if it was the 24°C it says on Amazon.

On boards with nothing on the bottom you can even chuck them in a skillet and heat them from below https://www.sparkfun.com/tutorials/59#Hot%20Plate%20Reflowing
