Hey so I hate to shit in on everyone else's opinions, but they're not really recommending the best gear for your dollar. /r/audiophile has a sticky on this exact subject. Basically the lowest end system they are willing to recommend is a pair of Micca MB42s . If you can spring for the 42x's, they are more than worth the 10 extra dollars. You will need an amplifier to drive them. /r/audiophile reccomends the Muse m50, but I can tell you from personal experience, a lepai 2020a+ with a slightly beefier power supply will run them just fine for half the price. These are pretty chunky speakers, but they'll blow any "pc/gaming" speakers out of the water. If you decide you'd like to go for this, I have about 30 feet of speaker wire lying around that I'd be happy to mail to you to save you the 8 bucks or so. Hope this helps, and happy listening!

u/ImaginaryCheetah · 33 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

nobody has explained their recommendations.

you don't get good volume on dialog because of crappy channel mixing from your TV.

that's not a dig on your specific TV... all TV's suck at this. in fact, most receivers suck at mixing down from 5.1/7.1 to stereo.

for any content generated in surround, something like 95% of the dialog volume is mixed to the center channel.

if you're listening on a pair of stereo speakers, you get to hear what the TV thinks is best, in terms of balancing the volumes between the channels.

folks here are recommending receivers that would give you 5.1 channel audio, and then also suggesting three speakers.

the three speakers are your Front L+R, and the all important center speaker.

receivers do a moderately good job of mixing all the surround channels to just the Front L+Rs, and if you have the center speaker, it will still get all of that delicious dialog.

your budget is a little tight, but doable.

https://www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/item/yamrxv379bl/yamaha-rx-v379-5.1-ch-x-70-watts-bluetooth-a/v-receiver/1.html $150

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B009IUIV4A/ $60 for your front L+R pair

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HH2GINM/ $50 for your center channel

-

check out your sound settings for anything called "normalization" or "equalization".

this will cap the maximum volume difference between the audio channels. so in effect it will reduce the loud parts, and bring up the volume on the quiet parts. this may be sufficient for you to like what you hear, or be sufficient for you to just get some nicer speakers and be quite satisfied.

if the "equalization" setting fixes the quiet/loud problem, but you just want more oomph, i would recommend

eris 4.5's https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00GP56OYA/ $180

or

fluance ai40's https://www.amazon.com/Fluance-Bookshelf-Amplifier-Turntable-Bluetooth/dp/B07CLDGXX1/ $200

both are self-powered, and need nothing other than a cable to connect them to your Tv.

i have eris e3.5's and they are simply great.

i have fluance floor speakers, and they're also great, so i would expect good performance on the ai40's.

ai40's come with more features - a bluetooth input option, and a remote to control the volume, source.

Get an Audio Technica AT-LP60 + an amplifier + speakers + speaker wire. That's what I have and it cost me less than $180. Here's the Amazon links for everything I have:

Record player

Speakers

Pre-amp

Speaker wire

STAY AWAY FROM CROSLEYS OR ANYTHING WITH BUILT IN SPEAKERS. DO NOT BUY A RECORD PLAYER UNDER $80. IT'S WORTH IT TO SPEND THE EXTRA MONEY AND GET A SETUP THAT WILL SOUND NICE AND WON'T DESTROY YOUR RECORDS. Can't stress that enough.

u/Broham13 · 12 pointsr/hometheater

Here is how I got started:

Micca MB42 Bookshelf Speakers $40 refurbished
Micca MB42-C Center Channel Speaker $27 new
Denon AVR-1912 7.1 Receiver $75 used on Craigslist

The great thing about these speakers is you can order a $30 crossover upgrade from Micca and feel like you got brand new speakers.

You could also skip the center channel and get a subwoofer on Craigslist, instead.

u/polypeptide147 · 11 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

Glad to have you join! I'll make a list of everything you'll need.

If you'll be upgrading in the future, it's a better idea to go with an amp and passive speaker setup, rather than active speakers. Then, next time you want to upgrade, you just need the speakers.

Here is that list:

Speakers

Nice little amp. SMSL makes really good budget stuff, and this amp is perfect for a set of desktop speakers. 20 watts per channel is plenty for being close to the speakers.

Speaker wire. Amazon Basics makes great stuff. If you want, you can get 100 feet of it for an extra $2 I think. You don't need banana plugs. They're for quick swapping of speakers, and if you only have one pair it doesn't really matter.

Simple wire stripper. Should work just fine.

Cable to plug it in. Again, Amazon Basics stuff is excellent quality. Especially this cable. I was honestly blown away with it when I got it.

-----------------------------------------------------

That's it. Everything you need.

If some point down the road you decide you want a sub, look at Dayton. They make a 8 inch, 10 inch, and 12 inch. Dayton Sub 800, Dayton Sub 1000, and Dayton Sub 1200 respectively. They can be had for around $100 to $150 depending on which one you get. I'd recommend getting one on Ebay if you're going to, and wait until they do one of those sales where the whole store is 15 percent off or whatever they are.

Hope this helps!

u/ShinyTile · 10 pointsr/hometheater

I've sat here a minute trying to think of a nice way to say this, and I can't, so here's what I've got, and it's not meant to be impolite:

$150 cad isn't enough for anything good, new. A soundbar may or may not be marginally better than your TV speakers. If you buy one with a sub, it'll add bass. It won't be clear, it won't be 'good,' it'll just be there. If that's all you want, well okay then. Regarding surround sound and music: More of the same. Music is generally just 2.1, and none of the soundbars will be anything even remotely interesting. For surround sound.... Similar to the bass: You will physically have sound coming from speakers around you, but it won't be good sounding.

I'm not trying to be high and mighty, I'm on a very low end setup compared to most people here (Denon X series and Elacs.) Honestly, for $150, you can buy something, and it'll sound 'different' than the tv speakers, but not 'good.' You'll either be adding bass or you'll be adding speakers around you, and that's all I can say about it.

I know you said you don't have the space for surround sound: What does that mean? How much room do you have? If you can, I'd vote to buy this receiver and preferably these or these if your budget forced. Those are small speakers, only about 8 inches. For very similar money, that's better and will eventually let you get a better sub and center / surround speakers. The "4.1" soundbar isn't real 4.1, it's just reflecting sound around your room. I'm sure it'll sound different, but just... meh.

You might want to check out /r/BudgetAudiophile Broadly though, they're all going to be similarly loud and similar in sound quality. I'd vote the LG or Samsung over Sony. I would encourage you not to get a soundbar.

EDIT: By the way, the LG does have a separate sub.

u/CryHav0c · 9 pointsr/battlestations

I used to have those, but then I got a set of bookshelf speakers with an amp, and I am never ever going back. They blow even my old klipsch 4.1s away.

My current setup:

I do not miss surround sound with how incredibly clear these guys are.

u/Matt3989 · 8 pointsr/hometheater

>This will be my first home theater setup, so it doesn't have to be the most insane sound quality

Why are you looking for 5.2 then?

Also, you probably want to stay away from HTIB if you're look for something that looks and sounds good.

$160 Receiver

$290 Energy Take Classic 5.1

If you're really concerned about bass, you're probably going to need to up your budget, these guys are pretty well regarded

If you want to spend more on speakers, these are solid intro to home theater speakers too (at $112 per speaker for L/R + $350 for a center channel) and I'd skimp on the surrounds and just buy whatever's cheap

u/dlstriker · 8 pointsr/googlehome

I really like the Chomecast Audios.

. All work really well together

The MB42X has a crossover, while the MB42 doesn't (can be added on but you'd need to buy and install a separate upgrade).

u/cjrobe · 6 pointsr/delusionalcraigslist

Oh definitely, I'm surprised how good sound some CRTs have, the best definitely sound better than my $150 Panasonic Sounbar. But even $60 speakers like this with a $30-60 mini amp would sound better let alone mid-range or high-end sound systems.

u/zeagan · 6 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

There aren't a ton of options at that size that are passive, it's a small market obviously and it seems like it's either super cheap and bad and/or outrageously expensive.

Cambridge Audio SX50 sound great and are smaller than average bookshelves, might still be too big.

They also make the Minx Min 22, this one I haven't heard though but it's definitely the right size and under budget.

Monitor Audio makes little cube speakers but they're somehow almost $400, and more for satellite surround use.

Super budget and also a little bigger would be the Micca MB42's for $60

If you feel like hunting around audiogon/craigslist/usaudiomart you might be able to find something better. The PSB Alpha LR1 was great. Realistic Minimus 7's are legendary and with a little tweak to the crossover are surprisingly great.

Buy a U-Turn Basic, Micca MB42 speakers, Lepai amp, Pyle pre amp and some cheap speaker wire

It's over your budget but this is about as cheap as you can get while still getting new high quality gear.

That's about as good of a low budget system as possible, while still being a foray into hobby/enthusiast audio equipment. Unless you want to look into used stuff. Going use can get you a really good set up for price but take more work to find but is hard to recommend.

u/Blueki21 · 5 pointsr/buildapc

I highly recommend that you get a pair of decent bookshelf speakers and a amp. It will blow away any cheap pair of basic computer speakers or expensive Logitech ones.

This is propably the best you are gonna get. In that pricerange, if you stick to needing a sub, you will not have anything that anyone here would recommend. If you don't care about that your best bet is to just listen to some systems at your local electronics dealer

I cannot stress enough how absolutely terrible those speakers are. In my opinion they will ruin all your investment and effort. At the very least get the Micca MB42's instead. If you can go up a little more, the Pioneer SP-BS22-LR are great for the price.

u/ShiftyAsylum · 3 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

$125 CAD? So ~$97 USD? Are you looking for powered speakers, or passive speakers with an amplifier? Here’s an option within your price range.

u/mexicantennisdude · 3 pointsr/audiophile

Hey all,

Considering buying desktop speakers to replace my harmon kardon sound sticks for my PC.

So far i've narrowed it down to 2 sets. I already have a desktop amp and all so i'm good there...i hope...

My options are,

Pioneer SP-BS21-LR 80-Watts RMS 2-Way Speakers http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004MEWZE4/ref=s9_simh_gw_p23_d0_i1?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=18V7A25BWVMGD5B34BG6&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=1688200382&pf_rd_i=507846

or...

Micca MB42 Bookshelf Speakers with 4-Inch Carbon Fiber Woofer and Silk Dome Tweeter
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009IUIV4A/ref=s9_simh_gw_p23_d0_i6?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=18V7A25BWVMGD5B34BG6&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=1688200382&pf_rd_i=507846

I mostly listen to Electronic music with the occasional hip hop. I also play games quite a bit and watch movies. This set up would be for my computer in my bedroom.

Additional equipment i have currently is the Aune T1 with the Bravo V2...maybe V3...

Thanks in advance!

Any other suggestions welcome but i'm hoping to stay around $50 for the speakers.

u/Goldenelm · 3 pointsr/vinyl

Hey, I was going to purchase the Audio Technica LP60 this week but was told that it does not have an adjustable counter weight and is known to skip. I have a budget of about $200 for a record player and new speakers. I was directed that buying a vintage record player may be a good idea and found this one on ebay. My first question is: Is the record player I found a good idea to buy? My second question is: I want to get these speakers. Do I need to buy anything else to get them to work with the vintage record player? Thank you in advance.

Edit: So while I was waiting for a reply, I started going through the guides on this subreddit. So I have a new question: what preamp/ whatever else I need should I get that won't cost insane amounts of money?

u/zim2411 · 3 pointsr/audiophile

From the thread, the Micca MB42s. Or scout out your local Craigslist.

u/howImetyoursquirrel · 3 pointsr/buildapcsales

Yep. Direct link here. Decent deal if you want to buy now and I do recommend them. When they get enough stock I actually got a 'like new' pair for $30. They came brand new, wrapping still on them. I think it was returned because there was a dent in the box ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

u/GothamCountySheriff · 3 pointsr/vinyl

No on the Dayton speakers. While they WERE a great bargain, user reports on the new production run suggest they are using different drivers/materials and do not sound good. The new cheap hotness is the Micca MB42:
http://www.amazon.com/Micca-MB42-Bookshelf-Speakers-Tweeter/dp/B009IUIV4A/

You should also look into the Andrew Jones designed Pioneer SP-BS22-LR. The usually run $149/pr. typical sale is $99, but currently (as of this writing) are $89/pr.:
http://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-SP-BS22-LR-Designed-Bookshelf-Loudspeakers/dp/B008NCD2LG/

For a receiver, I would skip the Pyle unit (I would generally skip anything Pyle). This Sherwood receiver is a decent entry level unit, gets good reviews and includes a built in phono preamp. It regularly goes on sale -- it was $84 a couple days ago:
http://www.amazon.com/Sherwood-RX-4109-Stereo-Receiver-Black/dp/B000MBUSD6

If you decide to go another route and don't have a built-in phono preamp, the ART DJ Pre II you listed is a great way to go.

I'll let someone else field the cart question. While the M97xe is a good cart, I'm not sure if it's a match for the Dual arm.

As far as replacing the RCA's, if you're not familiar with turntable repair, I would stay out of there. I believe you mentioned that you had a local who did turntable repair. I would add that to the list of things to fix.

u/steve3236 · 3 pointsr/buildapcsales

If you are willing to spend a little more you can pick up a cheap 2.0 digital amp off amazon and get some small bookshelf speakers like you were saying.

https://www.amazon.com/Micca-MB42-Bookshelf-Speakers-Tweeter/dp/B009IUIV4A/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1480922309&sr=1-3&keywords=bookshelf+speaker

Although this cost about twice the price I would be willing to say its worth it.

u/robotdinofight · 3 pointsr/hometheater

If I were building a $1500 system for audio here's what I'd do (if DIY wasn't an option):

AVR- Denon X1400 AVR - $330 refurb

LCR- 3x KEF Q100 - $480
or Emotiva B1 pair + C1 center $550

surrounds- something cheap - $70

sub- HSU VTF-2 MK5 - $607

you'd need to stretch a bit for room treatment, wiring, stands, etc.

u/TheCakesofPatty · 3 pointsr/vinyl

I wouldn't get the Lepai amp. Get something used. Personally, I would get something old, like if you could find an old pioneer or a technics receiver at a yard sale or something, you would be set. I don't know why these are unavailable right now, but I've heard good things about these speakers http://www.amazon.com/Micca-MB42-Bookshelf-Speakers-Tweeter/dp/B009IUIV4A/ref=pd_cp_e_0 And also, I would find a used turntable for sure. Usually, it's very easy to find a nice one. You may want to replace the stylus though.

u/thewaxbandit · 3 pointsr/vinyl

I replied with recommendations to improve your setup. I'm sorry if you didn't like my answer but you would improve your sound by throwing those speakers in the garbage and starting over again.

Also, nobody said you had to spend $1000 to have a decent sounding setup. There is TONS of used gear out there that people want to unload for cheap. Most people these days are unloading their larger speakers for soundbars and bluetooth speakers so there are lots of deals to sniff out.

Also....

https://www.amazon.com/Micca-MB42-Bookshelf-Speakers-Tweeter/dp/B009IUIV4A/ref=sr_1_42?ie=UTF8&qid=1491184966&sr=8-42&keywords=powered+speakers

Would you have been able to jump into the hobby with an extra $10? 4" drivers in an mdf enclosure with actual tweeters vs. (i'm guessing) 1.5" drivers in a plastic case with no tweeters.

I was also able to find several better options for a bit more money but nothing over $350.

If you are aware that your gear is cheap then you really shouldn't be surprised when somebody suggests that you replace it. Enjoy those Micca speakers by the way.

EDIT: Sorry, you'll need this crazy expensive stereo amp too.....

I would just get a reasonably priced used surround sound receiver from Craigslist and then add a center channel speaker and left and right front speakers. Most of the voices will come from the center channel and you will be able to hear them really well.

The Micca speakers would do quite well and be cheap.

Centers are most often way more important than surrounds. They produce the dialogue in movies, which is kinda pretty important. Surrounds cover the background sounds, which is less important. My advise is to invest in a matching center, cuz it's going to make a difference for movie-watching.

I like where Destruct0 is going I would also say look at these setups.

  1. Micca: Main speakers - Micca MB42X $90; Center - MB42XC $80; Surrounds -
MB42 $60; Subwoofer - Dayton Sub 1200 $150. Total $380 still enough room for stands, speaker wire and a sub cable.

  2. Boston - CS2310 5.1 set in Cherry $300 Plenty of money left for extras like above.

  3. Boston - CS2300 5.0 set $200 almost identical to above but without the sub + Sub: get with the Dayton above or you could do a Boston CSSub 10 $200 if you wanted to match the speakers.

Ok... well... you have a very limited budget for something even "budget" audiophile grade. That being said, if you can get your hands on a used/hand me down amp... take a look at these.

Micca MB42 Bookshelf Speakers

I would ask friends/family if they have an old stereo amp or surround sound amp they would be willing to give you. From there your next purchase would be an amp.

Zeos review of Micca's

u/mahonster · 3 pointsr/hometheater

Well, it's not quality, and it's not wireless, but it's what I have currently hooked up to my TV: a pair of Micca MB42's and a Pyle PCA3 amp, right around $110 for both. It's acceptable for what I paid for it, leaps and bounds better than the built in sound on the TV or most speakers marketed for computers.

At that price point you're going to have to accept some pretty severe compromises. You could spend $100 on a Jawbone or something like it, and have wireless (but not that great) sound, or spend about $100 on a setup as above and have decent quality sound, and no wireless.

BTW, I've owned the Klipsch Promedia 2.1's and the M-Audio AV30s, both have had some built in components fail at some point. Hence the recommendation.

Till I'm ready to drop about a grand or more on HT audio equipment, my little setup will do me just fine.

[You might like these too] (https://www.amazon.com/Micca-MB42-Bookshelf-Speakers-Tweeter/dp/B009IUIV4A).

Of course, I found a pair for $5 at goodwill but if I'd knew before hand on amazon I would probably still buy these bad boys.

u/TheFlyingDharma · 2 pointsr/htpc

Probably a desktop amp and a pair of bookshelf speakers. Something like this:

http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B005VR1VQE

http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B009IUIV4A

Or find one of those "home theater in a box" setups and use the receiver from that, which would allow you to add more/better speakers later if you end up moving or something. I got mine fairly cheap on craigslist when I couldn't afford much else, then bought higher quality speakers later on.

u/fozzik · 2 pointsr/hiphopheads

u/TheRoyalGodfrey and u/diabetesdavid got me covered. Cosign those comments as entry level tables. Make sure to get some good speakers as well, I'd recommend these but if you can't afford those or something, the most important part before getting decent sound is making sure you're treating the discs themselves good so I'd focus on just getting one of those first.

u/ethtrem · 2 pointsr/vinyl

My first setup was the Audio Technica AT-LP60 turntable, Lepai LP-2020A+ Amp, and Micca MB42 Bookshelf Speakers. I was able to buy all of that, along with speaker wire, for under 200 bucks. Some people in this subreddit are kinda against that turntable because it doesn't have an adjustable counterweight, but I had absolutely no problem with any of the equipment. It's all really easy to use, it played every record with no problems at all, and it only took like, half an hour to set up. For under 200 bucks, that's probably one of the best that you can get. It's not the ideal option, but it's a good starting point, especially if you're just a casual listener. Hope this helped!

Hey Audiophiles!

Im brand new to the this world and I'm looking for my first setup. I have a broke and starving college budget, so it will need to be the best bang for my buck.

What I'm planning on purchasing as far as speakers go will be the Micca's. Buddy of mine has them and I am quite impressed.

Im also looking into getting a Lepai amp to push them. However, I am willing to change my mind.

As far as a DAC goes I am clueless. I've looked into a Schiit, but those are a tad pricey. Any and all recommendations welcome.

The actual setup I will be using revolves around my dorm room. Desktop placement pulling my music from my Mac. However, eventually, I would love to move them to my TV and be able to use them as all around media speakers (For movies, games, music streamed from airport). I realize that these speakers probably aren't designed with that plan in mind, but I gotta do with what I have.

Any help would be great! Thanks everyone.

Hey guys!
My girlfriend is a music lover and her birthday is coming up so I wanted to surprise her with a new turntable. Her old Crosley turntable crapped out recently after only one year of use.

I am a complete newbie when it comes to this kind of stuff, but after doing a bit of research these are the items I have decided on.

The main issue I am having is picking an amplifier. It seems that I would need one in order to properly connect the turntable and speakers. These are the two I am looking at now, but I'm not sure if they are compatible with my set up or will have enough power. Any recommendations on which one I should pick? My budget is pretty tight.

I would appreciate any help, thank you :)

I don't really know if I need a phono input or a seperate pre amp. I can give you what we have, maybe that would help clear some things up. You sure know more than I do.

With this info, could you give me some links in that budget on amazon? Thanks much for your help. I really do appreciate it

Well honestly I was always looking for smaller alternatives to the daytons and the micca's are still the ONLY ones in the size and price range I was looking. You gave them an initial thumbs up and I went with it. Since then they have only received glowing reviews so why on earth question them? Maybe they measure poorly but there is a big difference between measuring poorly and sounding bad. In my little world coloring the audio is what speakers are suppose to do. Every other piece of hardware HAS to be by the numbers accurate but speakers are whatever they are and unless they are offensively painful to listen to or come out of the box in pieces it is really up to the beholder to asses and enjoy.

Some people like beats.by.dre even when they are an informed and educated individual. Doesn't mean they are wrong in any way, just have bad taste.

Going to bed...

I have this amp

Lepy 2020

Set up to these speakers

Micca MB42

But the volume is super low even maxed out.

What did I do wrong? Do I need a larger amp to power the speakers?

EDIT: source is from Audio Technica LP60

so any old cd/dvd player will work? all i need to do is plug in the RCA cables into the amp?

EDIT: I put main points in bold so that people can skim through this and get the gist of what I'm saying here. Very long post, so I thought it would be merciful to do so.

Alrighty, this may be long so buckle up and get ready for a journey.

I don't consider myself a hardcore audiophile or an expert in turntables/records, so I did some research when I was first looking to purchase one. I was originally looking at a Crosley record player but was soon warned about how notoriously evil they are -- by the way, DO NOT GET A CROSLEY, THEY ARE TERRIBLE!!! They are notorious for putting too much pressure on vinyls with their needles and end up scratching, carving, and ruining perfectly good records (for reference, ideal tracking force is two grams while the Crosley applies five grams tracking force). The parts are cheap and outdated and the player itself is extremely unstable and will skip if there's any sort of vibrational disturbance nearby. It's not good at all.

That said, I want to make sure you know what exactly you're getting into right now. When you buy a turntable, there are other things you need to buy along with it to make it function correctly. I don't know whether you're planning to get a turntable just as a gift that only your SO will use or if it's something you both will use, but it's important nonetheless to know what exactly a turntable requires to work properly. See, when people buy a turntable, a lot of people don't realize that there are three things that are needed alongside it: a pre-amp; an amplifier; and speakers. Speakers is obvious, sure, and of course you'll need something to control the volume, but a lot of people I've talked to only thought about that kind of stuff after purchasing their turntable.

The reason why these things are important is because most turntables rely on an electrical current in order to transmit vinyl to audio, but the current the turntable generates on its own doesn't matter if there's nothing to turn that current into sound. Think of it like a secret code. The vinyl is the coded message, and the turntable is the tool that deciphers the code. It can't decipher the code without the correct key, though; a preamp is like the key. It takes that current the turntable generates and amplifies it so that the signal is strong enough to be decoded by the amplifier. The amplifier is what actually turns it into the sound format, and is how you control volume as well. The speakers project the deciphered sound that you get to hear and enjoy. If you only plan on buying a turntable, then you don't need to worry about these things. Otherwise, keep reading; I'm finally getting to the point so please bear with me after this terrible analogy. :P

It's a lot to take into consideration when buying a turntable; when I did my research, I found that the Audio Technica LP series was pretty reliable. It's not exactly ultra high-end, but it's a great starting point for beginning collectors. There are two ATLP record players, the 60 and the 120, and some other variants that I'm not really aware of. I personally use the 120 because I thought it was funny being able to mess with the pitch settings on it, and I like the extended options the 120 has over the 60. This is just a comparison between both the 60 and 120 below if you're interested in the Audio Technica LP series:

In Favor of the 120:

  • the LP60 is a belt-drive turntable which means that you'll be replacing a belt in the turn table if it breaks, whereas the LP120 is direct drive and there's no broken belts to worry about replacing

  • the stylus is also a better quality in the 120, but I don't know from experience whether this is true in comparison to the 60

  • the 120 is also sturdier than the 60 as well

    In Favor of the 60:

  • the LP60 is smaller and more portable than the 120, as the 120 is kind of bulky and heavy

  • the LP60 is cheaper than the 120 (Amazon says that the 60 is about $100 while the 120 is about $300. I recommend the 60 as the best way to start listening to vinyl over the 120 as it's less of a financial commitment than the 120 is, especially if you turn out not to like records. not meaning to be negative but it's something to consider, as well

  • the LP60 has less options, but the options on the 120 don't usually matter to people who are just getting into vinyl so that's more of a personal preference

Something in the favor of both players, though: they both come with built-in preamps, so you won't have to worry about buying one of those. Some people don't like the sound quality of the built-in preamp, but I think it's fine and it really isn't something to worry about as a beginner. The amp and speakers matter a bit more.

When I went to go find a good amp, I made the mistake of going to Best Buy. Never go to Best Buy. It's a nightmare. The guy I talked to about amplifiers promptly directed us to home sound systems that cost over $1,000 in price. I found one on Amazon for $39. Not only does it work with my turntable, it's also bluetooth so you can stream from your phone if you want to as well (I'll link it right here so you can see it). I only set the amplifier up to half volume and it fills the entire room. I thought it was a miracle how I was seeing all of these huge ass home systems and then I get this little tiny ant of an amplifier and it does just as well.

Now, onto speakers. You should think about the speakers the same way as I described the amp. The biggest, most ultra high-end stuff is just not worth it when you're starting out. I use Micca MB42 Bookshelf Speakers, which are amazing (the link is here). It's also $60 on Amazon, so you'll be saving money there, too. Oh, and you'll need speaker wire, which is $11 on Amazon as well.

The total amount of money I spent on my system was $400 (it's really $399 but I rounded up), including the Audio Technica LP120, the mini amp, and the bookshelf speakers. If you get the LP60, you'd only be spending $200 ($199 but again rounded up). My setup and recommendations aren't the most top-of-the-line stuff, sure, but this is all I can recommend to you as this is all I've ever really used. It sounds great and I wouldn't really change it for anything.

I'm so sorry this is such a long read, but I went through a lot figuring this out the hard way. I got my turntable as a gift along with those speakers, but then found out that I also needed to buy an amp to actually be able to make my whole setup work, and it spawned a two week-long horror show of trying to figure out what kind of amp to get. I feel like getting a turntable or really anything on such a scale as this should be a momentous and memorable occasion to cherish forever, and shouldn't be tainted by having to go through the ringer just to get one missing piece of the puzzle. I am also a music lover and feel your first foray into vinyl shouldn't be associated with high costs but rather being able to experience it for the first time and marveling in its strangely magical quality. It's a great gesture, especially towards an SO.

Now I might be over-exaggerating a bit throughout this whole thing, but I think what you're trying to do is very sweet and I thought it would be good to take it seriously. Also, reading long posts like this can be exhausting, so I thought it'd be easier to get through if I did over-exaggerate and make it a more interesting read. Thanks for reading, and I hope your SO appreciates the gift. :)

based on your budget and only that budget....

Mica Bookshelves for your L/R speakers: https://www.amazon.com/Micca-MB42-Bookshelf-Speakers-Tweeter/dp/B009IUIV4A ($50/pair)

and the Mica Center: https://www.amazon.com/Micca-MB42X-C-Channel-Speaker-Tweeter/dp/B00HHFBEK6/ ($50 for center)

This would easily fit your budget and get you new front stage speakers and allow you to reuse your Yamaha HTIAB speakers for the side and rear surrounds.

u/OsamaBeenModdin · 2 pointsr/battlestations

The speakers are passive (unpowered), so they need much more power than the aux port on your motherboard can offer. Many PC speakers are powered on their own, so they don't need a separate amp. If you go with passive speakers you need either an amp or a receiver.

For less than $300 on all of that you might want to go with powered PC speakers instead of passive+amp which would give you some money to throw at a better set of headphones. This might be controversial around here, but I would highly advise against a gaming headset. For the same amount of money as a gaming headset you can get much better audio quality with a good set of headphones and a separate mic. You have lots of mic options, some can even connect right to the headphones.

If you want to go with passive speakers plus an amp, here is a quick setup I threw together:

The only way you'll be able to control the TV's volume with a remote is if 1) you output the TV's audio to a component that has a volume control, and 2) your TV's remote can control that component.

As u/GbMaxSE said, you could use a simple DAC such as this one, which would let you use your TV's optical audio output and send it to your speakers. You would then be able to control your volume using the knob on the M-Audios. Then you run into the problem of connecting your sub and controlling it's volume.

Your next option would be to use something like the Schiit Fulla. This just happens to be a DAC that also has a volume control. In this case, you would connect the Fulla to your TV's optical audio output, then split the signal coming out of the Fulla and route one set of RCA's to your M-Audios and the other to your sub. At this point, you've spent about $99 on the Fulla, $10 on cables, and $10 on shipping, and you still can't control the volume with your TV's remote.

Next up, for $150 you can buy this Denon receiver (free shipping), and then you also buy the Micca MB42 speakers for $60 (free shipping, with Prime) or find something on Craigslist. Now you're in it for $210. But now you have a home theater receiver powering some decent entry-level bookshelf speakers, and you can connect your subwoofer to the Denon's subwoofer output. You now have total volume control and most likely can use your TV's remote to control the volume of the Denon. Once you have a basic setup like this, you can upgrade any of the components (speakers, receiver, subwoofer, add more speakers, etc.) independently of one another.

We can keep going if you'd like! I love doing this stuff!

These are just a few of the entry level options. Don't take my word for it. I don't own any of these items. I just see them pop up from time to time as good entry-level options. Both pairs of speakers I posted are powered, meaning they have amplification built in. They wont require an external amplifier. Another option is to buy a pair of passive speakers, like these, and buy a basic receiver, like this, to power them.

Again, these are just some EXAMPLES. I am not recommending any of these items specifically, as I have not heard them. I am suggesting that you do some research and figure out what works best for your needs and budget.

You'll notice I also posted a subwoofer and DAC (digital-analog-converter). The subwoofer is going to allow you to hear the lower frequencies that those small speakers wont reach, which you might find necessary if you like drums. The external DAC will allow you to bypass the shitty DAC in your current source (a laptop, I'm assuming?). You'll be able to send a digital signal out of your source (provided it has a digital output) to the DAC where it will be converted to the analog signal that will go to the amplifier. It isn't necessary, but it will improve sound quality since the shitty DAC in your laptop or computer will be bypassed.

I've got the SL-Q300. It's my first venture away from a stand-alone portable crowsley and I couldn't be happier. Paired it with a Rolls Phono-pre amp, relatively cheap amp and some of these.

All said it was under 150 for the entire setup. I'm thrilled.

u/motodoto · 2 pointsr/audiophile

I'm the thrifty kinda guy.

Refurbished Denon receiver, 2 Micca bookshelves, a Micca center channel, and a Bic America subwoofer. About 700 bucks total. Sounds good enough for me. I know much better is out there but it's hard to justify the costs.

My Sennheiser HD598SE's are great ($150), and I have a FiiO E10K ($75) that they plug into at work, and at home I just plug them in directly since the onboard soundcard isn't too bad surprisingly on my motherboard. I have a Sony SRS-X5 bluetooth speaker plugged into the back of it as well. I have those cheap-ass sony ANC headphones (20 bucks at the time I bought them) and they get the job done at a cheap price for planes and for the AC unit blasting in my office (I know... killing me, 80db of white noise all day long).

I have a friend from work that spent 50,000 bucks on his setup. It sounds great, and it's worth it, but I couldn't spend that much on it.

I'm more of a headphone kinda guy. My next upgrade would probably be going all out on headphones. A pair of Sennheiser HD800's probably. That's in the far future, I got stuff I want to do around the house first.

These are my workout earbuds

They are a great value.

Here's what I'd consider to be a balanced setup:

Yamaha RX-V381 refurbished for $180 here.

Dayton SUB-1200 subwoofer for $150 here.

Micca MB42X Center channel for $70 here, or save another $20 here.

The Micca MB42X as your left and right speakers for $90 but they are out of stock at the moment. For your surrounds I'd pick up the base MB42 used since they'd run you just $40.

Alternatively sure just go for a decent pair of left and right speakers for now, add a sub down the line and be done with it.

u/5thvoice · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

Under $70 is tough. If you can stretch your budget to $90, I can highly recommend the Micca MB42X.

If you have a steady hand and either your budget is fixed or you just want them now, you can still basically get them. Buy the MB42's now for $60, and buy the $30 crossover upgrade once you have another $20.

Bear in mind that these do need an amplifier.

u/knappj · 2 pointsr/vinyl

That's actually the turn table I picked up. Guy bought it last year and just upgraded. It's....fine. It's definitely not what really want and I totally understand why purists hate them. The whole experience feels cheap, but it operates perfectly and I can't complain.

It also came with these: http://www.amazon.com/Micca-MB42-Bookshelf-Speakers-Tweeter/dp/B009IUIV4A

They are pretty solid for budget speakers. The receiver is an uninteresting 90s Technics. Nothing flashy, but works.

I'll still keep my eyes on CL and the local thrift stores, but I can finally make noise. Now I get to dump all my money at End of an Ear.

u/Colonel_of_Wisdom · 2 pointsr/audiophile

The system gets plenty loud to feel the walls vibrate and fill up the house if I so desire, but I rarely push it. It's great for movies. Edit: forgot to mention that everything comes from my Laptop -> receiver via HDMI.

Fronts: $40

Center: $30

Sub: $80

Rears: $50

Receiver:$40

Total: $240.

My main fronts are Bose Model 31's from the mid 90's. They are front ported with 8" drivers and 3" tweeters. They were absolutely falling apart when my uncle gave em to me so I replaced the woofers with some newer rubber surround ones. They sound surprisingly good for what they are, but the crossover doesn't match the woofer exactly. I've had these things for a long time. $40 for replacement speakers.

The center is this Sony model I picked up from a cousin of mine for $30 when he upgraded. It matches the fronts better than I thought it would, much better than my old center.

I picked up a Cheap Polk Sub last year and it's the only purchase I regret, looking for a replacement. $80.

My rears are Micca MB42's I picked up from Amazon, pretty solid little bookshelf speakers. I spent about $50 on them.

The Receiver is a Denon Avr-791 I got from the same cousin for $40. He was going to just give it to me but he needed the money. One of the HDMI inputs went bad on him and he replaced it with a newer model, this one was collecting dust and now it works perfect for me (minus one input).

I do most of my serious music listening with my Philips shp9500 or Logitech UE6000 headphones.

u/Mad_Economist · 2 pointsr/CabaloftheBuildsmiths

Hmm, not a lot to spend on speakers and headphones. Shooting from the hip, around that budget, I'd probably go one of two directions:

A pair of reasonable-ish entry-level speakers - something in the vein of the Micca [MB42] (https://www.amazon.com/Micca-PB42X-Powered-Bookshelf-Speakers/dp/B009IUIV4A) (which is passive, and so requires an amplifier, which can be [pretty cheap for a very budget option] (https://www.amazon.com/Lepy-LP-2020A-Class-D-Digital-Amplifier/dp/B01FZKA28Y/ref=sr_1_7?keywords=class+t+amplifier&qid=1573193876&s=electronics&sr=1-7))/[PB42X] (https://www.amazon.com/Micca-PB42X-Powered-Bookshelf-Speakers/dp/B00NXAEPDC) (which is powered and so requires no amplifier) - which will run something a little north of $100 unless you're down to buy used, plus a reasonable lower mid end closed headphone ([NVX's branding of the Yoga CD880] (https://www.amazon.com/NVX-Over-Ear-Headphones-ComfortMax-XPT100/dp/B0093PVTPS) is a pick I like a fair bit). These speakers will be pretty alright, albeit imperfect to be sure, and there are a few decent-to-good closed-back options in the ~$100 range.

Alternatively, if speaker quality is literally of no importance, you could go for something in the budget range of those Logitechs - there really are absolutely not options that cheap that are any good at all, but if you only use speakers to occasionally listen to youtube videos, it might be acceptable. That would leave more budget to allocate to the headphone side of things, where you'd have options like [AKG's] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=svAmJheRxAg) K371, NAD'S HP50,or on the used side of the street [AKG's] (https://www.rtings.com/headphones/reviews/akg/n700nc-wireless) N700NC, which are quite robust options in the closed-back world (particularly, in my opinion, the N700NC, which sounds fantastic to my ears with its digital signal processing active, and has quite good noise cancelling as well).

It's a bit of a tight squeeze regardless - if you're down with used gear, you can get a bit more for your dollar, but at very low price points you're in a space where shipping costs may dwarf savings, so even that might not help much, outside of headphones (which don't cost much to ship, and have a quite vibrant used market).

If you'd like more information or options, just let me know - I've thrown some links in above, but I'm pretty short of time today, so I figured I'd offer what I had from the top of my head rather than leaving you waiting.

u/excel958 · 2 pointsr/buildapc

This is a decent mid-range gaming rig. You'll want to stick to 1080p--probably on medium-to-high settings--and you should be hitting that 60fps mark without any issue.

As for speakers, if sound quality is important to you, then a lot of reddit audiophiles say that the Micca MB42 are among the best for its price-point. You'll need a small amp for it though--maybe 15-20 bucks for a Lepy or a Kinter amp.

Lastly, standing here in solidarity with Hong Kong.

This Amp may be a little bit expensive but for a starter, it will last you a long time, and you wont find a much better price on anything comparable unless you go used.

These Headphones are slightly high end consumer grade, yet still low end in comparison to audiophile headphones as far as they go. If you have the money, the Audio-Technica ATH-M50x’s have basically been the standard headphones for a long time.

These aren’t exactly the best as far as speakers go, but for the price, I have heard great things about them just because of the fact that they are so cheap. If you want to get something a little bit more expensive these are on a pretty damn good deal for the holiday season.

The AudioTechnica AT-LP120 is the #1 consumer grade Turntable Imo. But if you don’t want cheap greatness, get the Get the At-Lp60. You’ll notice that the turntable links that I send include the disc washer vinyl brush. Get it, you will need it If you buy used, and even some new need a dust brush.

if you want me to send you a CD player or Tape deck I can but those are harder to get more modern/ audiophile.

u/grendelone · 2 pointsr/hometheater

A number of possible solutions. Your TV has optical sound out. So you will need something to convert the optical digital sound signal to an analog signal (DAC). Then you will need something to amplify the analog signal to drive a speaker (amp). Then of course the speaker itself.

Hey everyone,
I'm new to using a turn table and receiver and i'm having a difficult time setting it up. I was using an amplifier before this and the volume wasn't as loud as I wanted it to be, so I ordered a receiver.

This is my turntable: https://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-AT-LP120-USB-Direct-Drive-Professional-Turntable/dp/B002S1CJ2Q

This is my receiver: http://www.ebay.com/itm/111877564099?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

These are my speakers: https://www.amazon.com/Micca-MB42-Bookshelf-Speakers-Tweeter/dp/B009IUIV4A

I set up the receiver last night by plugging the RCA cables from the TT into the phono input of the receiver and changed the setting on my record player (phono/line) to the appropriate setting. The volume was there, it definitely had the potential to get loud but the volume was distorted and not coming through clearly. It's driving me nuts because I just want the sound to be perfect already.

Any feedback would be extremely helpful!!!!!

Pick up an audio receiver, so that way you can hook up multiple audio sources to it (I would pick up a used one from Goodwill from around $20-$40.

I'm useless when it comes to sound system knowledge. I have a LP120 and have been using these. It sounds good to me, but is this something that I could add this subwoofer to? Or should I wait until I upgrade my speakers?

u/o0jrock0o · 2 pointsr/audio

These are your best bet in my opinion. They will sound better than that logitech system, and probably last longer as well. With the logitech system you are tying yourself down to using their sub, which means that if you decide you want better bass in the future you will have to either scrap the whole system and start over with dedicated speakers, or try to reuse the Logitech speakers and end up with something sub-par. With the Miccas, you can just add an RCA splitter and a subwoofer and be good to go.

If you want even more flexibility, go with the unpowered Miccas and get an amp like the SMSL SA50, which will be more power than you would ever need for those speakers for near-field (close up) listening.

To save a little money now you could also go with the Micca MB42 instead of the MB42x. The MB42x come with an upgraded crossover and according to most reviewers it is very much worth it to get the upgraded version.

If you really want your system to last a long time, you are much better off separating your components. Get a pair of speakers, get an amp for the speakers, and get a sub all as separate components. That way, you can upgrade components individually in the future without needing to scrap the whole system like you would need to do with the Logitechs. This also applies if a component breaks; you can replace one thing at a time. And even without upgrading, you will still end up with a much, much better sounding system for not much more money.

u/58845 · 2 pointsr/buildapc

Just FYI, you can get very slightly better performance from 2 sticks of dual channel 4 GB ram, for probably around the same price.

Also, for the speakers, it might be better to go with two higher quality units than 5 mediocre ones. Not sure what your best bet would be for a powered unit (something along the lines of an entry level version of the Audio Engine A5s) but you could go with pretty decent passive speakers and an amp for around the same amount of money.

That will be really hard. You could get a pair of Monoprice speakers for as little as $60. Then drive it with a power amp that you can get for about $40-$60. Consider the SMSL SA50 although it is a tad more expensive, or a Tripath Class T TA2020 chip amp such as the Lepai for $27. If you don't drive it hard, these TA2020 amps sound as good as $1k amps, and I am not even exaggerating. Hook it up with a $20 CD/DVD player and/or a $35 Google Chromecast that will do high quality wireless streaming audio and even supports high res audio.

Edit: The Micca speakers are also for $60.

u/Olgaar · 1 pointr/vinyl

As everyone mentioned, buy a used TT. Typically, you can find stuff used, in good working order, and much higher quality than anything new in the price of $75-150. I personally like the Pioneer line of direct-drive turntables from the late 70s and early 80s. Something like the PL-518.

What are you planning to buy for speakers and amplification? Whereas there haven't been advances in turntable technology because there hasn't been a market for 20+ years, there actually have been some great advances in speakers and amplification during that time. So I'd recommend you buy new for these pieces. Be aware, the mass market products are generally crap these days (think HTiB stuff--the mass market just doesn't care anymore).

For ~$100, one could pickup a a pair of Micca MB42s or a pair of DA B652s and power them off something like an Indeed TA2021.

Of course you'd still need a phono pre-amp (look at the Art DJ Pre II) and bear in mind, you won't have any input switching with that setup. If want to switch in different inputs, Yamaha has an affordable line of stereo receivers. The R-S201 for $150 will still need a phono pre-amp.

What I can't figure out is what else I need. I'm seeing some things saying I need a receiver, while others say I need an amp. I also have no idea what additional cords/wire I need to connect everything.
Here is the back of the speakers and the cords from the turntable, to see what I'm working with. I'm looking for the easiest, low cost, least space taking solution.
THANK YOU in advance from a major newbie!!

If you're not looking for surround sound, you can get a small stereo amp and a pair of bookshelf speakers.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0049P6OTI/

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B009IUIV4A/

If you want nicer components in a setup like this, the sky's the limit. I'm shopping around right now, and spending a lot of time with my favorite headphones, since breaking another set of pc speakers last year.

As far as I can tell, there's no good reason to buy pc speaker sets besides minor conveniences.

u/deadcell9156 · 1 pointr/audiophile

When I built my desktop, I skimped out on a stereo amp for the two bookshelf speakers I bought. Now, I wouldn't consider myself an audiophile compared to many here, but I do enjoy sound quality, and some sound troubles really do bother me. Recently, the left channel seems to be cutting out. I think the problem is the amp because it comes on briefly when I turn the amp off and back on, but then it cuts out again after a second. I think a new one would solve my problems, and I'm not looking for anything too large like a receiver (small desk area), but I don't want to get another shitty one.

u/Schweigman · 1 pointr/audiophile

I was told to repost this here.

EDIT (due to response on initial thread): Also, I'm not looking to upgrade speakers and/or amp. Just wondering if the audio interface I'm looking at will serve as a DAC and a mic receiver.

From what I understand this setup will work for what I need. But, I have a limited knowledge of all this. Hopefully someone here can confirm this for me.

Source: PC via USB

Current setup:

  • Micca mb42's
  • Smsl SA 36A
  • Behringer UCA202

What I would like to do is add the Behringer UM2 as a replacement for the UCA202. I'll be using the UM2 for mic input, can I output audio as well? Or do the RCA outputs output only what's being received from the mic? I read through the description, but it doesn't seem to mention anything about DAC capabilities, and I've no idea what 2x2 usb means.

Also, I hope this doesn't come across as me being lazy (like my last post did), cause I will be continuing to research while I wait for a possible response.

    Thanks!

Alright, we could probably get something on amazon or the like with reasonable shipping, but for $100 your options are pretty limited. I had these for a few weeks and they were actually fairly solid for near-field listening. They could put out decent bass as long as you were sitting near them and you could get them back into a corner.

edit: there are also a few Yamaha and Sony bookshelf speakers that are regularly well-received for around $100. I don't know the models off the top of my head, but they're fairly easy to find.

TV - Panasonic VIERA TC-L47E50

Amplifier - LP-2020A+ Lepai

Analog Audio Source - Logitech Wireless Speaker Adapter

Digital A/V Source - Apple TV

Speakers - Micca MB42 Bookshelf Speakers

The TV does have an optical audio out, which leaves me in the same position as before; as well as a component audio out, which bumps me up a step in that I don't need a DAC anymore, but I'd still need a selector. Obviously that's no big deal, I could easily get one, but if I can be finicky for a moment - I'm fixated on the notion of having the scheme outlined above.

I'm starting to strongly consider the DIY route, and maybe even integrating the DAC into the amplifier, with both analog and digital inputs, and a switch for source selection. Do you have any resources you've used in the past that you think might be helpful for this?

u/e60deluxe · 1 pointr/hometheater

well you cant play a record player through tv speakers. like i said you need a phono pre amp to even use a record player at all. i was under the impression you already had a working setup in the living room.

so now its going to be tight to get it all for $450 since you need a phono pre amp to even work the record player, and $150 goes into wireless.

here's what you can do:

In the living room:

  1. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000MBUSD6/

  2. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B005K2TXMO

    in the other room:

    http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00C2P61FO/

then you'll need the wireless, 4 speakers, maybe 2 sets of these:

    http://www.amazon.com/dp/B009IUIV4A/

cables, wires, and that will take up the rest of the money. you'll also want a usb power connector since some of the devices use usb power usually you can just use a free port on the tv or cable box or something, but if not you just need a usb charger.

which tv do you have, do you know?
u/Blais_Of_Glory · 1 pointr/BudgetAudiophile

For speakers, if space is an issue, you should get the Micca MB42X then, as they're much smaller than the JBL LSR305s. Or you could even just get the Micca MB42. I have the JBL LSR305s and a fairly small desk and they fit. I have a 23-inch monitor and one speaker on each side of the monitor. You may also want to get a DAC for your speakers, like the Schiit Modi 2 / (Amazon link) or a DAC/amp combo, like the Schiit Fulla / (Amazon link) or FiiO E10K (Amazon link) or AudioQuest - DragonFly (Amazon link).

For headphones/headsets, you have many choices. If you are a gamer, you should check out Sennheiser's gaming headsets. If you don't plan on gaming and just want to listen to music, check out the Sennheiser HD series. They can be found much cheaper on Amazon, eBay, or other various retailers. I personally have the Sennheiser PC363D headset for gaming and unfortunately paid about $240 for them, not even 6 months ago. Right after I bought them, the price on Amazon dropped dramatically, to around $130. I just checked on Amazon and now they're back up to around $219, but if you watch them, they will probably drop again like they did before. Or you can check on eBay. Sennheiser does have cheaper models though (all of these are around $150 or less) like the brand new Sennheiser GSP300 / (Amazon link), Sennheiser GSP350 / (Amazon link), or the Sennheiser GAME ONE / (Amazon link). I have tried a few different brands and Sennheiser is my favorite for performance. I also have the Sennheiser HD 598 SE / (Amazon link) for listening to music and the Sennheiser RS120 II wireless headphones (Sennheiser RS 120 (older model) (Amazon link)) for my TV and got them for my parents too. If you live in a place where you can't have your TV or music too loud, the wireless headphones are very helpful. Overall, I use the Sennheiser PC 363D headset the most and it sounds awesome. If you're a gamer, get a gaming headset, or if you just listen to music, the HD series are great too.

You are welcome, you will need a preamp, amp, and speakers or a preamp and powered speakers as well. U-turn has an option to put a preamp into the turntable as well. There are plenty of good budget options or you can go the route I took and look at some vintage receivers which will have a preamp (labeled as phono). I found a solid receiver to be in the $40 - $100 range for that. Check your goodwill/savers/salvation army for some good speakers.

u/comrade_eddy · 1 pointr/vinyl

The typical turntable setup requires a turntable with a pre-amp (built in or external), two speakers, and an amp. If your speakers are powered you don’t need an amp.

At your price point you’ll get the best bang for your buck if you get lucky and find it used at thrift stores. I live in a big city and that shit goes lightening fast. I looked for months and could never find anything so I bought new.

The cheapest new turntable that isn’t a PoS is the u-turn orbit. A cheap external pre-amp that will do the job will run you [$49](ART ART DJPREII Pro Audio DJPRE II Phono Turntable Preamplifier https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000AJR482/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_kK0SAb2F9RQDB). Some budget starter speakers $79 and a little cheap amp $29.

Now this goes over your budget so if you have to buy the turntable new you can reduce cost by looking for speakers and a stereo receiver (rather than an amp) at thrift stores. This stuff is usually easier to find than the turntable. Good luck!

Edit: whatever you do, don’t buy the audio technica lp60. It’s a PoS and you will want to replace it. Better to be patient and save.

u/Thirty_Seventh · 1 pointr/buildapc

What's your budget? You can get some really nice sound with a $40 amp and $45 / $60 / $80 speakers. I'm not qualified to suggest PC speakers at lower prices than that.

u/Hunter_behindthelens · 1 pointr/AskBattlestations

Are you firm at $60? I would wait just a few weeks when you can afford something just a bit more.

My minimum requirement for Good sound would be: This Behringer DAC - $30 + This Lepy Amp - $33 + These Micca Speakers - $58 for a total around $120. And everything will be upgradable as you want, if you wanted to add a Schiit Stack with a good pair of headphones later. My headphone recommendation for under $50 is the Sennheiser HD 518's when they occassionally go on sale for less than $50, I paid $46 for mine new.

  • Edit: To save money, you can use a 3.5mm to RCA and ditch the Behringer DAC to save $30 if you want. But a separate DAC will tend to get better quality being isolated outside your computer vs. Onboard sound. This would put your total about $30 more than your budget, and be a LOT better than dedicated "computer speaker systems".

Others have mentioned it but it bears repeating. Those are low quality speakers. It is NOT worth investing in the equipment that you would need to drive them. Don't throw good money after bad. Start from scratch and get something significantly better.

  • AVR: DENON
    AVR-S510BT
    - $169. Entry level receiver from one of the best brands available. A good and very affordable starting point.
  • Front Speakers: Pioneer SP-FS52 ($129 each) & Pioneer SP-C22 ($99). Since you seem to like the look of floor standing speakers, these are good quality entry level speakers with a matching center. Total $357.
  • Surround Speakers Micca MB42 - $69. Small bookshelf speakers that will get you to 5.0. I would consider these optional at this point, since you're on a budget.

That's a good entry level 5.0 setup for around $600. If you're on a budget, consider just getting the AVR and front left and right speakers for now. Add the center, surrounds, and a subwoofer of your choice, as your budget allows in whatever order you prefer. I can guarantee you it will sound better than any possible set up with you existing Sony speakers.

Saw them on /r/zeos and thought they were affordable enough. Thanks for the reply!

I live in Canada so the prices for me fluctuate a bit than for Americans when ordering onlien, I recently picked up the Pioneer SP-BS22's, my tt is still in transit so I haven't had the chance to demo them much, but from what i hear they're pretty well received, the reviews i've read seem to point out they sound a lot better than the price would lead you to believe. They go for about $120 on U.S sites.

But if that is too much, these Micca speakers have a pretty good following, and at a mere $50, they definitely a steal!

What amp do you guys recommend I get for this speaker(s)?

u/FappyMVP · 1 pointr/audiophile

Hello, I'm looking for some new bookshelf speakers for my desktop. I have a dac/amp combo already for my headphones so I want some passive speakers that can plug into them.

I found these 3 speakers and were both regarded pretty good. Does anyone know difference in quality between these 3 speakers?

Also, what's the difference between the Micca MB42X and the non-x? Is it a big difference?

u/I3igAl · 1 pointr/ZReviews

I bought the Covo S for my wife and paired it to a SMSL Mini5, mostly so she could also have a headphone out without getting a separate unit.

If you are getting the Covo because of budget constraints, pair it with a Lepy 2020:

https://www.amazon.com/Lepy-LP-2020A-Stereo-Amplifier-Supply/dp/B00C2P61FO

If you can swing a higher budget, or dont mind buying used, get either the MB42X or the MB42 and a crossover upgrade kit:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00E7H8GG2
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B009IUIV4A
http://www.miccastore.com/crossover-upgrade-for-micca-mb42-bookshelf-speakers-mkiii-p-114.html
And pair either of those with an SMSL SA36:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B017W13OR0

Buying the covo and lepy is like buying a used beater car from the corner lot; it will get the job done but it won't be very good at it. if you can, its better to save up and reach the next tier.

u/miglas · 1 pointr/hometheater

Ok, this will require a bit of rigging up, but would sound pretty good, I think. Buy a set of decent bookshelf speakers, like these, then get this little amp to power them, then get this bluetooth adapter to make it a bluetooth system. Whole thing would be $100. You'd also need the speaker wire and banana plugs to plug into the speakers. You could buy a cheaper set of speakers to save money.

u/benest · 1 pointr/BudgetAudiophile

Looks like you have both. That's pretty standard and gives you good options.
The simplest may be to add a simple SMSL amp (SMSL SA-50
for $66.99 would do the trick) with whatever passive bookshelf speakers you can afford with the rest.

The Micca MB42 are only $60, while Micca MB42X are $90.
You might be able to find the Pioneer BS22 on sale from Amazon or Fry's for under $90

You'll hook up speaker wires from the amp to your sub (Input 1) and another set of speaker wires from your sub (Output) to your speakers. Then make sure to select High on your High cut toggle.

So, the other poster linked me some pioneer speakers that look nice, and Zeos had posted these

http://www.amazon.com/Micca-MB42-Bookshelf-Speakers-Tweeter/dp/B009IUIV4A/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1414706764&sr=1-1&keywords=MB42.

The Denon receiver he posted looks almost too inexpensive to be true, even for a refurb. But for now I'm thinking I'd buy either those miccas or the pioneers, that denon receiver, and 2 stands for the speakers. For a sub, I know you have to drop hundreds to get a real quality sub, but I'm in a top floor of a condo and don't want to shake the neighbors downstairs too bad.

u/Botoj · 1 pointr/audiophile

I'm looking to cobble together an inexpensive 2.0 setup for my desk. I've purchased an amp, a Lepy 2020a, and now I'm looking around for a set of inexpensive bookshelf speakers. My budget for speakers is $100 Canadian and preferably as far under as I can go without wasting money, and my only real sources to purchase a set from is Amazon or Best Buy Canada. My options right now are the PrimeCables 6.5" bookshelf speakers ($50, rebranded Dayton Audio B650 non-air??), the Micca COVO-S($50), and at a fair stretch, the Micca MB42 non-x($90).

Both the COVO-S and the PrimeCables sets are $50, and I can't seem to find many reviews to base my decision on. The Miccas at least have a hyper-critical review from NO Audiophile and a highly lauded review by ZeosPantera, but I can't find much on the PrimeCables speakers/ I've read that the manufacturing process of the B650s has been degraded however, and I'm worried that's been carried over to these rebrands. Would either of these options be worth the $50, or should I really just wait a bit longer and grab the MB42s? Is there something else I haven't even considered or come across? I have looked around my little city for second-hand gear, but there's really nothing interesting (some really old Paradigm V2 Titans with busted speakers...).

I will be using whichever speakers I get for games and music. I'm not upgrading any existing speakers, I'm simply finally getting around to picking a set up. I'm used to headphones, Sennheiser 449 to be exact. I don't have any experience in "audiophile"-level hardware. That's why I'm here, hopefully somebody who knows a bit more can guide me down the right path.

u/BloodSquirtle · 1 pointr/hometheater

Thanks for your reply and advice. The all in one system was inherited when I bought my house. The previous owner installed two ceiling built-in speakers for the back left/right of the 5.1 setup. If I can confirm that those speakers are 4+ ohms, I am considering doing a full replace on the rest, so getting:

[Dayton Audio SUB-1200] (https://www.parts-express.com/dayton-audio-sub-1200-12-120-watt-powered-subwoofer--300-629)

[Micca MB42 Bookshelf Speakers] (https://www.amazon.com/Micca-MB42X-Bookshelf-Speakers-Tweeter/dp/B009IUIV4A?th=1)

Assuming I can check the two built-in ceiling speakers (which are a lot newer than the philips setup) and confirm they will work does that list make sense?

You don't need a "(pro?) audio interface" or pro studio monitors to listen to music.

All you need is PC 3.5mm to RCA cable to home audio powered speakers or an amp and passive speakers.

If you want to use USB out, get a DAC. FiiO D3 or others.

Not a projector, but I have a pair of Micca MB42 speakers and cheapy SMSL Q5 amp. The put out a good amount of sound for the size, certainy enough for an apartment. The other good thing about that amp is you can plug in various different devices. Your PC (USB) , your phone, your games console (optical input). And it's smaller than a couple of DVD boxes.

Ok, posted this last night wanting to get an opinion on this receiver on CL for my first setup, or this receiver on eBay, but also want to ask another question... Am I better off for a budget setup in a small apartment doing TT/Pre-amp --> Receiver --> Passive speakers, or TT/Pre-Amp --> Powered Speakers? I'm looking at both the Micca MB42 and the Micca PB42X

u/mcaron1234 · 1 pointr/BudgetAudiophile

I do, I use my old AV receiver with passive speakers. You have options on that though.

  • Passive speakers and a small AMP: micca MB42 for $59.95 and a small amp like this Lepai 2020 for $24.38.
  • powered speakers that won't need an amp: edifiers for just over your budget at $109. There are a lot of options for powered speakers some with Bluetooth builtin, but the good ones of those start around $130.

That eats up all your budget with speakers and amp. Checking Craigslist or Facebook marketplace you might find deals, particularly on a nicer stereo amp or AV receiver to use with some passive speakers. If you are interested in running Volumio on a Pi, that's going to add a bit more. For the pi you need, the Pi ~$35, DAC $20+, case $15, SD card $15+, and power supply $10. The pi is pretty nice with Volumio though, it has a good mobile webpage plus iOS and android apps for a few bucks. Volumio has plugins that allow for it to be an airplay receiver or to use Spotify.

These two would be fine on a budget of $220:

[Yamaha R-S201BL 2-Channel Stereo Receiver] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00F0H88SY/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_It43xb6A4626W).

[ART Pro Audio DJPRE II Phono Turntable Preamplifier] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000AJR482/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_av43xbHE3X876)

That's only $160. For speakers and that budget, I'd go for the Micca MB42s (Mine were cheaper than this).

All this and you're barely above your budget at $229.43.

I could suggest the extreme budget stuff that I bought (Pyle, Lepai), but there's no point when you have the credit. You'll also need speaker wire and a pair of RCAs. You'll probably end up around $240 or $245.

Ninja edit: Or, you could go vintage, but then you wouldn't be able to use your Amazon credit.

u/FULL_METAL_HOODIE · 1 pointr/hometheater

This is what I came up with.

Either the SMSL Q5 Pro or the FX Audio D802 as your DAC/amp. SMSL has better build quality and a dedicated subwoofer line out whereas the FX Audio has slightly more power. Both have USB(from PC) and optical(from TV) inputs, a small footprint for your desk and remotes that you can use to adjust volume while watching TV not at your desk (I assumed this is what you were going for).

For speakers, I'd get the Micca MB42 or the Micca MB42Xif you can extend your budget a little more.

You can expand either of these systems with a subwoofer in the future whenever the funds become available. Just be aware that if you pick the FX Audio DAC/amp, your sub will need speaker level inputs but that isn't usually an issue. Something like the Dayton Audio SUB-1000 is a well regarded subwoofer for the price.

You could always replace the fronts I recommended with the ELAC B4 saving $100, and then use something like Miccas for your surrounds (https://www.amazon.com/Micca-MB42-Bookshelf-Speakers-Tweeter/dp/B009IUIV4A/) saving another $100. For your question about the subs, the SVS will ultimately be much better, but the Klipsch one isn't going to be a slouch. Also for the speakers, it depends on how much you really care about sound, as the Pioneer speakers will still do great.

Edit: the Klipsch sub is now on sale for 175.

u/WamSalker · 1 pointr/vinyl

I would highly recommend against buying that set of speakers. My brother bought a pair so that he could use them for a school presentation that he was giving from his laptop, and they were acceptable at best for that. I figured I would give them a shot when he was done with them, and was extremely disappointed.

The tweeters were tinny and didn't get very loud. This wouldn't have bothered me that much, except the sub would completely overpower them to the point that, at full volume, I couldn't hear the tweeters when they were 18 inches from my head. The sub is also really really muddy. Anything over a moderately fast bassline will just sound like one long note instead of a string of short ones.

To top it all off, the cables are insanely short, so there's no escaping that woofer no matter how hard you try. And with the lack of any sort of bass level adjustment you're hopeless unless you have some sort of EQ on whatever you hook them up to.

If you want cheap speakers, save another 50 bucks and buy this amp and these speakers. You'll probably get way better sound than any 2.1 computer speaker set you can find for anywhere near that price.

Or check out /r/zeos as there's a lot of good information there about budget setups (it's where my recommendations came from)

Hi, first time poster here. I'm about to pull the trigger on my first turntable setup, but I feel I need to check in with the helpful people on this sub with the equipment I'm thinking of buying and whether or not its all compatible. Other things like isolation pads for the speakers, better record sleeves, a cork matt, a record brush, gram scale, and a cleaning kit are accounted for. Are any of those things unnecessary?

The following is strictly the hardware. I've been torn between two different set-ups however.

SET-UP 1: Audio Technica AT-LP120 ($299) & the Micca PB42X Powered Bookshelf Speakers ($120). TOTAL: About $419

SET-UP 2: Audio Technica AT-LP120 ($299), Micca MB42 Passive Speakers ($60), and the Yamaha R-S201BL 2-Channel Stereo Receiver ($130) TOTAL: About $489

I'm also unsure about adding a subwoofer for I don't know if one is essential or just a nice thing to include for the complete package. My eye is on this one: Pioneer SW-8MK2 100-Watt Powered Subwoofer ($160)

Any and all advice is much appreciated.

u/Jakomako · 1 pointr/buildapc

The total price really depends on which speakers you use. This $50 pair is what I use. Should make the total price of the system around $75

At the bare minimum include the following things if you want help and/or advice choosing or setting up amplifiers, speakers, DACS, etc

  • Budget: a little more or less than 100 u$s? I'm not sure
  • Country: Argentina. If the product cost more than 50$, I have to pay 50% of the excedent as taxes
  • I can buy from: Any amazon, b&h, I think almost everywhere
  • Use: Audioslave, RHCP, Rock in general, series,
  • Where: A desk in a Room
  • Space: 3.67m x 3.88m, NOT really loud, I will be most of the time 1.5m away from the speakers and occasionally on my bed, or taking a bath or cooking in the next room.

    Optional but also helpful

  • Powered, passive, or no preference: no preference, I've heard you can get a better quality with the same budget with passive speakers.
  • Any size limitations for either speaker or amp: no
  • To upgrade later?: not really
  • Pref certain way of sounding (Bright/forward, smooth/laid back, neutral, etc): that immersive experience (everyone here would call it the commercial one?) but I'm not sure, I don't have any speaker to listen and compare.., I only have a HyperX Cloud 1 headsets and I won't be downloading FLAC at least for the moment, I only listen from Spotify (music) or Bluray (series and movies) most part of the time

I've made my search but I have no idea about this so... I need speakers for the pc on the desk in my room. Mostly for series, music, games. I will not update the system soon after this purchase and I don't have anything right now besides my current headphones.

I'm from Argentina so I have 2 disadvantages: I have absolutely no idea what I'm buying because there are no places near me to try any of these speakers. For every purchase, if I spend more than 50$ I will have to pay 50% of the excedent. That means, I can buy an amp of 30$ without paying taxes or if it exists the possibility to buy a pair of headphones by separate (1 and 1 making a pair) I will probably not pay taxes... Are there places willing to do that?

    Questions:

    - What would you recommend and why?

    - My motherboard doesn't have bluetooth. I want to connect my pc the 99% of the time and maybe my phone 4-5mts away. What is my best option?

    - I think I can buy from any amazon. I've found better prices for some of the products there. Editing..

    Active:

    Edifier R1280T 156$ - £89.99

    Edifier R980T 115$ - £59.99

Swan Speakers - D1010-IVB (unavailable? the 2nd best option?)

    Passive:

    Micca PB42 60$

    Micca PB42X 110$

Pioneer SP-BS22-LR 93$ (the best ones? 1st best option?)

    Dayton Audio B652 28$

    Dayton Audio B652-AIR 45$

    Amp:

Lepy LP-2020A Class-D 23$ (I want to connect my phone occasionally without disconnecting my pc, should I get a bluetooth or wifi amp?)

ps: sorry for the long post and thanks in advance

Totally new to this so I greatly appreciate the help.

For the holidays, I received as gifts the Audio Technica AT-LP60 turntable and a pair of Micca MB42 bookshelf speakers.

I now see I will need an amplifier and speaker wire, and I would like to spend $50 or less. I'm doing research to try to understand exactly what I need but I'm still a little unsure.

I'm seeing decent reviews about the Lepai LP2020A+. I see folks who bought the same speakers as me also recommending this. Is there any reason it might not be compatible with my turntable?

And finally is this the kind of speaker wire I would need?

Many thanks!

Looking into ordering the Micca MB42 (non X version) from Amazon (international shipping), as they are 40% off at the moment.

Any reason I should not do this? The absolute cheapest recommendation is the MB42X, but I'm not an audiophile so I'm a tad unsure (I just want a really good sound and a solid price vs performance ratio).

Also, is there a next level up contestant? I don't mind spending the money (Up to $500), as I'm all about bang for the buck.

Cheers!

OK, to sum up what I've learned today. To set up a basic 2.1 set up I need:

I actually just bought this setup.

Turntable

Speakers

Receiver

u/ldeas_man · 0 pointsr/bapcsalescanada

Edifier R1280T

never personally heard them but based on appearance and specs, as well as reviews, they'll be significantly better than those Klipsch speakers

personally, if I had $100, I'd get Micca MB42s and a Lepy amp

my current setup I purchased used and have had zero issues, so I'd say check Kijiji if you're willing to take a 'risk'

Alright. I am so sorry that I'm being annoying..

how do these

SONY SS-B1000

compare to these

Dayton B652 $42.50

Micca MB42 $59.95

Micca MB42x $79.95

What is the best bang for your buck?

Could you put the speakers in Best to Worst?

I plan on gettin the Lepai 2020A+ unless there is a better amp for the price and then adding a Power Supply Upgrade
