I like Hornloaded's guide. In this case, it would be these Micca MB42Xs with the LP-2020A+ Lepai amp. These are also recommended by a fellow redditor.

Lastly, a general guide by that same redditor.

u/gurueuey · 65 pointsr/hometheater

For the same money as the sound bar plus the HDMI cable, you could go with this setup which would be miles ahead of that, and also easily upgradeable.

Start with this $150 Pioneer receiver. I have one, it's perfect for a basic receiver.

Then add these $90 Micca L/R front speakers.

Use this $150 Dayton subwoofer, or one of the other sizes depending on your room. I have the smaller SUB-800, it's an excellent small sub, i'd've gone bigger, but my wife put the kibosh on that.

Finally, if you decide to space the bookshelves out the way you should, instead of sitting on the edges of the TV stand, add this $70 Micca center channel speaker for a full 3.1 setup. Actually, even if you don't space them out, get the center. It really helps with dialog, especially if you sit off center.

Total: $460, not including shipping. Buy some inexpensive speaker wire similar to the HDMI cable you ordered, just be sure it's solid copper.

You'll have a full 3.1 setup that would handily beat all but the absolute highest end sound bars for audio quality, and is easily upgradeable. You can move the MB42x front speakers to the rear and upgrade the fronts and center, or simply add another pair for 5.1. You can also easily upgrade the subwoofer or receiver.

In addition, if you have any gaming consoles, plus a blu-ray player, a cable box, and possibly an HTPC, or might add one, the receiver has more HDMI inputs than most tvs, making it the logical choice for the command center of your system.

Edited for clarity, additional info.

Micca MB42x + SMSL SA50 + Chromecast = about $194. You'd also need some speaker cable, and a 3.5mm to RCA cable.

Fluance SX6 if you want to bump up the speakers.

I suggest that 3 part combo. The amp lacks a sub out so run the outputs into the subwoofer, set the crossover to 80Hz, and connect the speakers to the outputs on the sub.

Nice little amp with a remote, and the Micca's are awesome speakers for the money. You could easily add a small, powered sub into this setup someday if you wanted, too.

u/polypeptide147 · 20 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

I'll make a list of stuff you need. For the best "bang for your buck" in the $200ish price range.

-----------------------------------------

Speaker wire. Amazon Basics makes great stuff. If you want, you can get 100 feet of it for an extra $2 I think. You can get those monoprice banana plugs if you want. They just help if you're going to be switching speakers around a lot.

Simple wire stripper. Should work just fine.

Cable to plug it in. That'll just plug the amp into a computer. And that cable is amazing quality. For real. I don't know what it is about it, but the moment I touched that cable I knew it was special. This isn't a joke either. You'll understand when you get one. Trust me.

50 watt per channel amp. This thing will be more than enough. I just like it because it is open box, so cheap. The same one new on amazon is $65. If you want to order from amazon, you can just get the smsl sa-36a. Same amp, just 20 watts per channel. Which, again, is plenty.

[Here's that cheaper smsl amp] https://www.amazon.com/dp/B017W13OR0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_U2NSBbTRHGFS5). I've got a few of them. They're great. This is what I'd go for if the other one is sold out.

Cheap but good little amp. I don't have one of these because I'm not a fan of the looks, but they get great reviews and a lot of people really like them.

---------------

Speakers:

Miccas. These things are nice for that price. In this price range, you really won't be getting anything better unless you go DIY.

Fluance SX6. These guys are big, but they throw a good amount of sound and some pretty deep bass for a pair of bookshelf speakers. Careful, they're pretty big.

Pioneer. These things are decent, but I think the Fluances would be better for this price. The SX6s throw more bass, which is good if you're not getting a sub. However, these are smaller.

Fluance signature series. I know, you said your budget is only $200, but you said if you need to spend more, then you will. These will sound better than all of the other speakers linked, however, that's not why they're here. I put them here for two reasons. The first is that they're front ported. Most people that are new to speakers might put them up against a wall or close to it, not understanding that the port needs some room to breathe. These have front ports so that's not a problem. The second reason, just look at them. If you really care about looks, these ones are the ones. They're beautiful. (My opinion obviously).

Oof almost forgot. Pleaae don't place the speakers directly on your desk.

--------------------------------

That's a lot. I'll sum it up with my opinion and why.

Amp: smsl sa36a. For close range, you don't need anything with more power. This thing will do whatever you need for bookshelf speakers.

Speakers: micca mb42x. Why? Here's why: for this price range, you won't notice a huge difference in any speakers, unless you get some bad ones. So, get the cheapest ones you can. Later on, if you can afford to upgrade them, you'll probably want to do that. Then you'll have a pair of $80 speakers that you don't need rather than a pair of 130 speakers that you don't need. Another reason I would pick the miccas is because they punch above their price range. Most people say they sound more like a pair of $125 speakers rather than a pair of $80 speakers. So, for real, they're good. Also, they're the smallest of the bunch.

Or, build a pair of C Notes and get something way better than any of these.

Hope this helps!

$30 DAC - Link - Please know these aren't game changers, it's only offering better quality sound than your motherboard. If your headphones or speakers aren't that great, it's not doing to do much. Weakest link type of thing. If your headphones suck, these wont help. But if you have a decent set of phones, many people have sworn by these.

$75 DAC - Link - More expensive, better sound output. Again, should be paired with even higher quality sound gear. $100+ speakers/headphones.

$115 DAC - My Dac - Link - I needed a dac with a little power. I use speakers with my setup instead of headphones. This one is 2x25. It's honestly the most anyone should need for a 2.0 system.

$80 Speakers - Link - These are mine. I love them. Best combined $200 I've spent. Instead of a CPU that will need to be replaced in two years, these will out last many builds if I take care of them. The reviews are through the roof compared to the price. And I'd have to agree.

There are a million reviews about the topping DAC + Micca speakers. Things feel more immersive. I think that's the simplest way to put it.

If I had a $1500 budget, I would recommend the following:

Epson Home Cinema 2150 - $699.00

Micca MB42X - $79.95

Micca MB42X Center - $69.95

Fluance AVBP2 - $119.99

Denon AVR S530BT - $229.00

This would give you a decent entry level setup. You'll have about 50$ left over for speaker wire. I am be no means an expert but I lurk a lot and I think this would be decent.

I've sat here a minute trying to think of a nice way to say this, and I can't, so here's what I've got, and it's not meant to be impolite:

$150 cad isn't enough for anything good, new. A soundbar may or may not be marginally better than your TV speakers. If you buy one with a sub, it'll add bass. It won't be clear, it won't be 'good,' it'll just be there. If that's all you want, well okay then. Regarding surround sound and music: More of the same. Music is generally just 2.1, and none of the soundbars will be anything even remotely interesting. For surround sound.... Similar to the bass: You will physically have sound coming from speakers around you, but it won't be good sounding.

I'm not trying to be high and mighty, I'm on a very low end setup compared to most people here (Denon X series and Elacs.) Honestly, for $150, you can buy something, and it'll sound 'different' than the tv speakers, but not 'good.' You'll either be adding bass or you'll be adding speakers around you, and that's all I can say about it.

I know you said you don't have the space for surround sound: What does that mean? How much room do you have? If you can, I'd vote to buy this receiver and preferably these or these if your budget forced. Those are small speakers, only about 8 inches. For very similar money, that's better and will eventually let you get a better sub and center / surround speakers. The "4.1" soundbar isn't real 4.1, it's just reflecting sound around your room. I'm sure it'll sound different, but just... meh.

You might want to check out /r/BudgetAudiophile Broadly though, they're all going to be similarly loud and similar in sound quality. I'd vote the LG or Samsung over Sony. I would encourage you not to get a soundbar.

EDIT: By the way, the LG does have a separate sub.

u/rabidfurby · 9 pointsr/audio

Standard issue /r/audio "I want better computer speakers" answer - stop looking at "all in one" bundles. Since you say you have 3 monitors, I'm guessing you also built your computer from parts, right? You should look at your speaker system the same way. The links you posted to 2.1 speaker systems are like going to /r/buildapc and saying "hey guys, help me decide between these Dell and HP systems I saw on sale at Best Buy".

Absolute bare minimum, you want an amplifier and bookshelf speakers:

http://www.amazon.com/Micca-MB42X-Bookshelf-Speakers-Tweeter/dp/B00E7H8GG2

http://www.amazon.com/Lepai-LP-2020A-Tripath-Class-T-Amplifier/dp/B0049P6OTI/

One step up from that, you want a powered subwoofer:

https://www.parts-express.com/dayton-audio-sub-800-8-80-watt-powered-subwoofer--300-627

Need your speakers to be far away from the amp? Trivial, because the speakers hook up to the amp using speaker wire, which you cut to fit:

http://www.monoprice.com/Product?c_id=102&cp_id=10239&cs_id=1023901&p_id=2747&seq=1&format=2

The links above are basically the absolute bare minimum I can recommend in this subreddit without getting crucified. If you can share your maximum budget, there are probably more and better recommendations.

u/Rrussell2060 · 8 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

To build a system using the minimum recommendations from this sub, let's start with this diagram: http://i.imgur.com/Z8FMJ.png
DAC is optional, so is a subwoofer but I recommend one.

Without DAC, this cable: Monoprice 105597 3-Feet Premium Stereo Male to 2RCA Male $5 Link: http://amzn.com/B0094A1F3S

This is a great starter system, I would have loved to had something like this starting out.
All of these pieces can be upgraded, do your research. Look for sales etc. Good luck and have fun.

u/sk9592 · 8 pointsr/malelivingspace

Are you talking about a $100-150 price limit?

Well, if you want a 2.1 computer speaker set and never intend on spending more money on upgrades, then the Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 is still a solid choice. Even after 15 years on the market.

If you are starting with $100-150 and plan on upgrading/expanding in the future, I would recommend starting with a pair of bookshelf speakers and a mini amp. Something like these:

https://www.amazon.com/Micca-MB42X-Bookshelf-Speakers-Tweeter/dp/B00E7H8GG2/

https://www.amazon.com/Lepy-LP-2020A-Digital-Amplifier-Stereo/dp/B00C2P61FO/

As time goes by, you can add a subwoofer or swap out the amp for a AV Receiver. You can expand into a 5.1 or Atmos surround system by add a center channel, surrounds, or height speakers.

It all comes down to whether you want to go the one-and-done route or a piece-by-piece upgrade route.

What setup: 5.1 , stereo, 2.1?

Assuming 5.1:

$180 Reciever
$110 Subwoofer (easily find $10 promo code online, or its $120)
$90 Fronts
$80 Center (matching)
$40 Rears

So that $500, but it doesn't include speaker wires (get 14 gauge oxygen free), stands/mount, cable (mono coax subwoofer cable), etc. Some of this equipment can be bought for slightly cheaper used on Amazon, so you can shave a few bucks that way.

Micca MB42X bookshelf speakers are on sale for $71. Some of them on the Warehouse Deals side are also 20% off if you're a Prime member so they end up being like $50ish. Great set of speakers.

u/Armsc · 7 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

Here are some thoughts on this.

  1. Using two Bose speakers isn't going to work well and will be expensive.

  2. You'll be better off with a soundbar...yep I know bring the hate but of the two it's the better option.

  3. $200 is going to be hard but if you have variable RCA audio outputs then you can put together a budget 2.0 setup. You'll want to check your TV.

Here are a few options to consider.

  • Soundbar - Yamaha YAS-107 $200, Yamaha ATS-1060 refurb $130 - These Yamaha's sound good on their own except for the extreme low end. However, they have the ability to add in a power subwoofer to them. I like this because the sub is not proprietary and can be used with future systems. If you're in a smaller space these will actually do alright on their own.

  • Soundbar - Sony HTCT80 $100 - Basic soundbar with a wired sub (my preference for simplicity) that will sound much better than the TV. Is this a great solution no but it will work and is very cost effective. For music it's going to be muh but for HT use in a small room it will do fine.

  • 2.0 - SMSL Q5 Pro amp $130, Micca MB42x speakers $90 and speaker wire- Slightly over budget but this will get you on the path to a much better system. This amp has an optical input so you can use it with any TV. The bookshelf speakers can be spread out to get you a better soundstage. The low end will lack but you can fix that later with a sub. You'll also need either an RCA cable to 3.5mm or an optical cable to get the signal into the amp.

  • 2.0 - SMSL SA-50, speaker wire (above) $10 and a set of BIC DV62 $120 - Larger speakers will get you better bass but you'll have to see if you have space for them. You'll also need to have those variable analog audio outputs and an RCA cable to feed the amp.

  • 2.1 - This is going to be tight and you'll need the analog outputs from the TV but this will get you good results. Lepai 168HA $30, BIC DV32 $60, Dayton Sub800 $100, and some speaker wire $10. You'll also need an RCA cable (those are cheap).
u/rpbtz · 7 pointsr/vinyl
  1. Yes, it's a good entry-level turntable and is easy to both use and set up.
  2. If you want speakers you can hook up straight to your turntable without any extra equipment you'll be looking for powered/active speakers. The Micca PB42X should be pretty decent, and the M-Audio Studiophile AV 30 should be alright as well. If you plan on getting a power amp or a receiver (so you can use passive speakers) you could look into the Pioneer SP-BS22, the Polk T15, or the Micca MB42X.
  3. Nothing if you buy powered speakers. For passive speakers you'll need either a receiver or a power amp.
  4. Radiohead - Kid A

Something along the same lines would be the Micca Covo-S, but you need an amp for them (looks like the soundphonics have a built in amp in the larger speaker?). Amps can be had for cheap, but many cheap Chinese amps have a slight buzz in them whenever they're on. I don't spend any real time with super cheap speakers, so sadly I can't give any cheap amp recommendations. I had a Dayton DTA-1 on my Micca MB42X (bigger cousin to the Covo-S) and it was a weak amp, but loud enough, and no buzz. Lepai amps seem to be very hit or miss with their quality.

If you want something nicer, but a bit over $70, there's the Micca PB42X. I mentioned the MB42X, but those need an amp, whereas the PB42X has one built in. It's not a good or powerful amp, but being built in is handy if you don't plan on going for crazy quality. They aren't huge speakers -- about nine inches tall, or six inches if you lay them on their sides. IMO the best sound you can get for this price without scouting for crazy deals on hi-fi equipment.

But of course... if you happen to be outside of the US then I think that availability is pretty poor.

u/ratbuddy · 6 pointsr/AdviceAnimals

Bose is 100% about marketing to people who buy into style over substance. The sound quality is generally among the worst you can buy, especially at the price point. Their noise cancelling headphones are OK, I'll give 'em that much.

Spend a few minutes in /r/hometheater or over on avsforum - you don't need to look far to find many, many better sounding and less expensive speaker setups. Just one example, these little guys will blow the doors off the Bose cubes.

Comes in right under your budget, and plenty of people on these forums have been happy with that setup (I have no experience personally with the amp or speakers).

u/picmandan · 6 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

I agree that we need more info, but I'll suggest a pair of the Dayton Audio SUB-1500, added to some full range speakers and a used HT receiver. A good alternative would be to DIY the sub or subs - the VBSS (Value Buster Subwoofer System) is probably a good choice.

But others are correct, if not done carefully, the bass may be irritating to others, and if the venue is too large, these may even be insufficient.

Edit - I managed to skip a good chunk of your questions:

For a home sound system that will work for your party, you'll need:

  • A 2 channel amplifier, or better yet a Home Theater receiver. Decent used receivers can be had for under $100. The advantage with a HT receiver is that it will have bass management, that is the ability to split the sound signal into upper frequencies for the main speakers, and bass frequencies for the subwoofers, which typically come with their own amplification. If you use a 2-channel amp, it can work ok, as nearly all subwoofer amps have filtering in place available to limit the signal range to only bass frequencies (for example below 80 Hz). But the other speakers will play these bass frequencies too, so there will be some overlap, and the main speakers could be more efficient if they were relieved of their bass duties as with an HT receiver.
  • 2 or more speakers. Two are usually sufficient for music. Do you want small, medium, or large bookshelf speakers, or tower speakers. Size is not always related to how loud they play, but small speakers may have difficulty filling a venue, even when subwoofers are used.
  • If you build your own subwoofer you'll also need an amplifier specifically for the subwoofer, either a plate amp to be part of the subwoofer, or another type.
  • With a subwoofer, you'll need a hearing person to help tune the system a bit. There is a gain knob on the back of most subs that helps to balance the output with the rest of the music. You may wish it to be higher than normal, which is fine, but not by too much. In particular, you may wish it increased a bit more for your party, but back at the house, have it turned down some. Bass travels through floors, windows and walls too, to an extent. You probably don't want to bother neighbors.

Edit 2: Without any knowledge of your specific room sizes (which would still be good to know!), I'll recommend the following setup:

  • 2 Dayton Audio SUB-1500s, total $380. (Two subs will help provide sufficient output and even out the bass response over the area).
  • 1 pair of the Dayton Audio B652-Air, $45
  • 1 used 5.1 Home Theater Receiver, from Denon, Yamaha, or Onkyo for about $100. I'm partial to Denon, but the others can be fine.
u/dmizzle0929 · 6 pointsr/vinyl

you should look around on /r/audiophile. Their lowest recommended setup are the Micca MB42X and the Muse M50. You can go cheaper on the amp but the speakers are the key part to a good listening experience. You're at $145 there. The LP120 has a built-in preamp so you won't need to worry about buying a separate one.

also if you haven't yet check out /r/zeos for his 2.0 and 2.1 recommendations located HERE

All those are if you want to go new. You can probably scour Craigslist or eBay and find some vintage stuff for a little cheaper, it's up to you.

I've been SO happy with my Micca MB42x's powered by a SMSL SA60

Amazing sound for $170. Here is some help in setting up your PC equalizer.

u/everlong44 · 6 pointsr/hometheater

You will have to get a receiver and with that budget, you will have to buy a refurbished receiver to get anything for your money. Amazon is selling a good yamaha 5.1 receiver below:

http://www.amazon.com/Yamaha-HTR-3066-R-5-1-Channel-Refurbished-Receiver/dp/B00IWURW6U/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1404937723&sr=8-10&keywords=yamaha+receiver

Then you can get a pair of bookshelf speakers to start:

http://www.amazon.com/Micca-MB42X-Bookshelf-Speakers-Tweeter/dp/B00E7H8GG2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1404937847&sr=8-1&keywords=micca+speakers

This would be a pretty decent 2.0 setup. Over time you can purchase a subwoofer:

http://www.amazon.com/MartinLogan-Dynamo-300-Theater-Subwoofer/dp/B004LRPXAU/ref=sr_1_16?ie=UTF8&qid=1404938019&sr=8-16&keywords=subwoofer

This whole setup can be expanded to a 3.1, 4.1, or 5.1 setup by purchasing another set (or 2 sets) of bookshelf speakers.

I personally am more open to sound bars than many people here, I have one on all of my TVs except my main HT system.

That being said, if this is your main HT system I'd see if you can swing this:

Denon AVR-S530BT Refurb Receiver for $150:
https://www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/item/denavrs530bt/denon-avr-s530bt-5.2-ch-x-70-watts-bluetooth-a/v-receiver/1.html

Pair of Micca MB42X speakers for $90:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00E7H8GG2

Total = $240

If you absolutely can't go much above $200 then get the Dayton Audio B652-AIR speakers for $67 at the link below or get the above speakers used on Amazon for a little cheaper.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NOA58RS

The nice thing about the Micca's is they have a matching center channel (on the same Amazon page) that you could add later on to upgrade your system. And with that receiver you could eventually add a center, a sub, and 2 rear speakers for a full 5.1 surround setup. Even if you don't want anything more than 2.0 anytime soon it's best to give yourself options down the road in case you change your mind.

Same, I have to stop myself from buying more entry level headphones because it's a lot easier to financially justify buying an entry level pair then a mid - hifi pair.

Although I did just listen to Zeos again when he said that an entry 2.1 speaker setup is just as good / better than a mid to hfii pair of headphones which resulted in me buying the components for a 2.1 setup:

Dayton Audio SUB-1000 10-Inch 100 Watt Powered Subwoofer

u/brianf408 · 5 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

First step: have you read noaudiophile's reviews? He does very thorough reviews on a lot of budget speakers, and has corrections for many of the popular options. His corrections for the Infinity P163s that I'm currently using made them sound like completely different speakers.

First let's start with powered options:

The Micca PB42X would be a good option. They are basically a powered version of the MB42X so you don't need to purchase a separate amp. Also in the similar realm that get recommended here a lot would be the Swans D1010 and the Edifier R1280T.

Personally I'm a bigger fan of passive speakers, as you get a lot more options to expand your system.

Pioneer BS22 bookshelf speakers are great and have gone on sale quite a bit lately for $70-80/pair.

Dayton B652 I am currently using as my surround speakers, but people rave about them as a budget desktop option

Micca MB42X also get great reviews.

You could also go used for your speakers, but sometimes it can be hard to parse through all the junk out there if you don't know what you're looking for.

Take any of those passive options and pair them up with an inexpensive amp like this SMSL or Lepai for a good budget setup.

I would also recommend checking your local Craigslist or Facebook marketplace for a used receiver, you could pick up a very decent one for just a few bucks and have a great starting setup. This will give you a lot more powerful amp, and the ability later to easily add a subwoofer or expand to surround sound. Personally I'm using an older Sony home theater receiver at my desk, it's old enough that it doesn't have HDMI or optical inputs, someone was just giving it away so I snagged it.

u/psycholis · 5 pointsr/hometheater

Here's an HDMI 2.0 with HDCP 2.2 receiver that will work for your needs. I would choose these MB42X with the upgraded crossovers compared to the original MB42s as the upgrade provides a big improvement in sound for only $20 more. This is already over your budget but I'll keep going.

From there you can add the matching center and a subwoofer. All told this comes out to $557. The speaker preference means little to me as everyone has different opinions about speakers but I would not skimp on the subwoofer and the one that I chose is IMO the value leader when it comes to subs.

u/turdfergusonpdx · 5 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

easier to just throw out a few recommendations. the OP can take them or leave them afterall.

on a tight budget it's hard to beat these Micca's.

a step up from there would be Fluance. They're nearly twice as large but also exceptional for the price.

u/Blais_Of_Glory · 5 pointsr/audio

Do NOT get any internal sound card!!! I can't say this enough. People kept telling me and I didn't listed. I bought 2 of the best sound cards and had to return them due to interference. Get a DAC like the Schiit Modi 2 (Modi 2 Amazon link) or Modi 2 Uber and save yourself the frustration and have much better sound.

For speakers, check out the JBL LSR305 (Amazon link) (Amazon link with cables) or if those are too expensive check out the Micca MB42X. They're both great speakers. I got the JBL LSR305 about 6 months ago and they sound amazing with my Schiit DAC. Check on eBay too. I got a brand new Schiit DAC for about half the regular price and they have used ones even cheaper.

u/BestintheVerse · 5 pointsr/buildapcsales

How much better are these than the Micca MB42x's? I just bought them for the same price a week ago... Though the Micca's are smaller though for my desktop application.

u/Bill_Money · 5 pointsr/hometheater

Sidebar Wisdom:
99.9% of the time Soundbars or HTiB (Home Theater in a Box) systems are not a good investment of your time and money. It is the general consensus of r/hometheater not to recommend these things and instead simply steer a user toward a 2.0 or 2.1 system made of quality, Audio-Centric name brand components easy to assemble and cheap enough for low budget or space conscious buyers. Most can be expanded to 5.1 if you buy items in the correct order.

That being said for $140 you can get a set of these: http://www.amazon.com/Micca-MB42X-Bookshelf-Speakers-Tweeter/dp/B00E7H8GG2?ie=UTF8&keywords=micca&qid=1464745129&ref_=sr_1_2&sr=8-2 & a cheap amp from this list: https://www.reddit.com/r/Zeos/comments/43mn1n/guide_desktop_20_speaker_systems/

much better then a soundbar

I dunno if its frowned on here but my #1 suggestion is craigslist. I've bought JBL northridge series, Fluance sx-6, Def Tech and klipsch bookshelves for $50 or less. I've also missed on out on quite a few deals for fantastic speakers $100 or less.

The only real suggestion I have for the price range is https://www.amazon.com/Micca-MB42X-Bookshelf-Speakers-Tweeter/dp/B00E7H8GG2

These Micca bookshelf speakers: $80 http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00E7H8GG2?pc_redir=1406627024&robot_redir=1

This amp: $20 http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0049P6OTI/ref=pd_aw_sims_5?pi=SS115&simLd=1

With some speaker wire, audio cable, and (optional) bigger power supply for the amp. I got this setup inspiration here on reddit and it's INCREDIBLE how good it sounds for $120 in all. I hope to buy a sub to complete the 2.1 system.

It's a perfect medium between high end and a cheap plastic satellite set of speakers. Lot's of room to upgrade too.

u/MMfuryroad · 4 pointsr/hometheater

For $1500 all inclusive I'd personally ditch the Atmos up firing speakers for now and concentrate on the main soundstage and your subwoofer. Especially with wanting a quality setup. I'd go with Ascend Acoustics CBM- 170SE's as mains, a CMT-340SE as a center for $618 shipped. Then I'd go with a HSU VTF-1 MK3 for $451 shipped. That's $1069 for mains and a sub leaving you $431 left to budget an AV receiver and a pair of inexpensive side surrounds. If needed for the CBM-170SE's (as their not towers) these HiVi stands for $99 plus shipping are a quality speaker stand at a reasonable price per pair. Any inexpensive bookshelf can double as side surrounds like the Micca MB42X's for $89 shipped. For the receiver you can get a factory refurbished 2015 Denon X1200 7.2 channel receiver with a one year factory warranty for $320

u/mellovibes75 · 4 pointsr/battlestations

Not OP but I can help you out here. Let's break this down by component:

  1. Speakers - There are two types: active and passive. Active = amplifier built into each speaker (i.e. most dedicated "computer" speakers from the likes of Logitech, Creative, etc.). Passive = 90% of speakers out there, must be connected to an amplifier to work. Typically passive speakers will get you a better speaker for a given price for an active but you have to figure in the cost of an amplifier. For a passive speaker set up, the cheapest system recommended over at /r/audiophile is a SMSL SA-60 amp and Micca MB42X Bookshelf Speakers. If your budget is higher, ask in the daily purchase advice sticky there (read the rules/suggestions thoroughly). I don't mess around with active speakers so I can't recommend any.

  2. Microphone - For simplicity's sake, I will recommend you look into USB connecting condenser microphones as they are affordable and have good sensitivity. Something like the Audio-Technica AT-2020 or Blue Yeti are popular mics for under $100. I have the Yeti and can attest that it is a very good and sensitive multi pattern mic. They can be hooked directly up to your PC or if you want to get really fancy, check out an audio interface like the Focusrite Scarlett Solo or Scarlett 2i2. The nice thing about an interface is it allows you get a nice mic with an XLR connector (generally better than a USB connection) and it will work with your PC.

  3. Headphones - Don't waste your money on "gaming" headphones. A nice 2 channel pair of cans with a standalone mic like I listed above will hands down outperform the likes of Turtle Beach and Razr headsets. /r/headphones has a really good wiki with more info than I can provide here and headphones broken down by price range and characteristics. Plus, then you can use them both for gaming and general music listening and have a good experience, something you don't get with dedicated "gaming" headsets. The amp I listed in the speakers section is fine for headphones but Schiit makes absolutely fantastic headphone amps and DAC (digital to analog converters, check out both /r/audiophile and /r/headphones for more info on them and why they are good for your set up) with very respectable price tags.

Hope this helps. Higher quality audio equipment can be confusing and daunting, what with all the technical details, wide price ranges, parsing through all the marketing bullshit and the sometimes snobby attitudes of some "audiophiles". I wish you luck and feel free to ask me if you have any questions.
u/mcgillicutty1020 · 4 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

Are you just looking for small speakers? Because these can be considered satellites by definition. I think people mistake compact speakers as satellites. Micca MB42X

u/CJRhoades · 4 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

Here's how I'd spend $3000:

AVR - Denon AVR-S910W $350
Subs - 2x SVS PB1000s $950
Mains - KEF Q100B $450
Center - [KEF Q200CB](http://www.amazon.com/KEF-Q200CB-Center - Channel-Loudspeaker/dp/B00CE3LGZY) $500
Surround/Rear - 2 Pairs Micca MB42X $180
Total: ~$2500. Enough left over for stands, cables, banana plugs if you want them, etc. That AVR supports Atmos and DTS X so you can substitute the rear surrounds for some ceiling speakers if you'd like.

u/AverageJoeAudiophile · 4 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

At $50 your best bets are the Dayton B652 or the slightly more expensive Micca MB42X. Add in a T-amp or any cheap stereo receiver you already have or find on CL and you'll have something better than just about any set of PC speakers.

u/jackdriper · 4 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

You can totally get both high quality TV and music audio over wireless for a reasonable price. Check out the Chromecast Audio or Apple Airport Express. Both will stream audio over wifi to any speaker setup you go with.

I only have experience with Apple's Airplay, but if you have a couple Apple devices, it's super simple to use and works really well. You can pick up and Airport Express for ~$20 used.

For example, a pair of Micca MB42x (I'd recommend the PB42x instead, but they seem to be out of stock), an SMSL SA-50 amp, and an airport/chromecast would be about the same as the lowest-end sonos setup, and sound a lot better. For your TV, you can use a receiver instead of the amp to switch between the Airport/Chromecast input and the TV input.

If your budget is bigger than that, then swap in a better pair of speakers. Your speakers determine 90% of the quality of your system, so spend the most on them, not expensive wireless solutions.

(this is very similar to how my house is set up, so let me know if you have any questions)

This is a solid system and should be pretty future-proofed with that receiver in the case that you want to upgrade the channels.

If you're will to put in a little work, I think you can build a better sounding set for that price.

Two pairs of the Micca 42MBX for the fronts and surrounds:

That together is about $300.

Plus all your cables and banana plugs from Monoprice. You might even have some money left over to get an extra pair of the Micca speakers to make it a 7.1.

u/neat_username · 3 pointsr/hometheater

Speaking in broad terms, if a company is more well known for making TVs and the like, stay away from their audio products.

A Denon, Yamaha, or Marantz would be a better buy. Onkyo can still be a toss up, I don't know if they've rebounded from faulty HDMI board issues. Also don't be afraid to check out accessories4less.com and snag a refurb unit. That, or check out open box units at a big box store for a steep discount.

Unless you've got an itchy trigger finger, you can camp out on Craigslist (assuming you're in the US) and grab some superb deals, too.

As far as speakers go, check out frequency response for a rough idea of how low and high they'll play (these numbers can and are often fudged, the only way to tell if you like a pair is to sit and listen to them - preferably in your own listening space - before buying, often times a storefront will have to do. Miccas are popular if you're just starting out, I've never heard them but a lot of beginners are perfectly content.

Your budget is kinda light, so you may have to skip the sub for now and add it later when you get some more money.

u/Yoyodyne_Propulsion_ · 3 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

I don't think you can get all three for that price. I would get the amp and fronts , and save for a sub.

Here's what I'd do on as small a budget as reasonable:

Reciever

Speakers: Pick from some of these - Pioneer; Wave Crest Audio; Micca

Alternatively, you could go for a powered monitor setup. This will allow you to plug the speakers directly into the tv, without a receiver. They will sound better than a soundbar. However, they aren't as easily upgradeable like a conventional setup is, and when you decide to, you'll still need to buy a reciever. My advice, is to buy these Micca powered speakers now, then save up around $500, and buy a good quality 2.1 setup. then, you can easily move the Micca's to a desktop system, or any other TV.

u/concentus7 · 3 pointsr/hometheater

Apparently reddit audophiles argue that these speakers are among the best for its price point:

If you can spring for the MB42X for an extra 20 bucks, get those. If budget is an issue, the MG42s are good too.

You will need a small AMP though. They tend to run about 15-30 dollars.

> don't have the need for much power from a system

> I don't want something that is going to rattle the house to disturb the downstairs tenants.

The main goal of quality components is NOT high playback volume with wall-shaking bass, it's high quality playback, such as you mentioned:

> to play Pink Floyd throughout my apartment as clearly as it sounds on my headphones.

I'll go ahead and give you direct purchasing advice, take it or leave it, but it will sound far better than any soundbar even up to multiple times the price.

Micca MB42x $80 - I can't imagine you can't fit these because they are really small.

Denon E300 $180 - remote control, expandability (for 3.0, 3.1, 5.1, whatever), audyssey multEq, front usb input, and network playing features if you wire it with ethernet (airplay, spotify, pandora, etc).

Speaker wire, 50ft 16awg $10

Total $270 (maybe a bit more with shipping?) for something high quality and expandable. EDIT: Maybe add 1 or 2 HDMI cables from monoprice, as needed.

u/Siegfried262 · 3 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

What about the Micca Covo-S speakers and an amp like the SMSL-SA50?

From what I've read they're great speakers for the size and you can always upgrade down the line if you're so inclined. I have the Micca MB42xs myself and they're fantastic speakers for the price. Though those would stretch your budget a smidge.

I would suggest the Micca PB42x as they're on special pricing right now but the volume would be on the back and not as accessible as they would be with speakers using the amp I linked.

Check out /r/budgetaudiophile and /r/diyaudio.

I'm thinking about building a pair of Overnight Sensations. The kit is costs about $140.

My only hesitation is I don't have a decent soldering iron. By the time I buy that, and the finish for the cabinets, I know I'm going to be up to about $190. For that price, I could get a pair of Micca MB42X speakers and a 8" powered sub.

Either set requires an amp, which will be another $60-80.

So for now, I put up with my old Bose Companions, which really sound pretty thin.

u/TyGamer125 · 3 pointsr/hometheater

We don't recommend sound bars because they are bad by design. I'd suggest getting 3.0 with a receiver. Here are the settings on the receiver you'll want to adjust: dynamic compression (makes everything closer to the same volume meaning loud explosions won't be as loud and quiet whispers won't be quiet), vocal booster, and if needed boost the center channel volume. Here's a good setup for cheap that should provide really clear dialog:

  • Denon s530bt or Denon s540bt for $150

  • Micca MB42X $80

  • Micca MB42X-C $70

  • 3x Speaker cable with banana plugs $31 (depending on placement you might need longer or shorter cables)

Edit: Then setup is match red on back of speaker to red on back of receiver, HDMI from tv to receiver then go through the quick setup. And if you want to keep it lower profile you could flip the speakers on their side but probably better to just buy some cheap wall mounts and mount them beside the tv since you're supposed to put them equal distance apart as they are from the listening position. Probably have it set up in 30-60 minutes.

Edit 2: encase you were wondering why sound bars are bad
u/mysistersacretin · 3 pointsr/hometheater

For the price of that amp you could get a decent 5.1 receiver on accessories4less, which may be a better option if OP has the space.

Edit: Do something like this OP.

5.1 Receiver- $139.99

You said you wanted to stay under $300 if possible, so here's a decent budget oriented setup with room to upgrade as you save more money. You can get a sub later, and if you decide you want a nicer 5.1 setup, just move these speakers to be your rears and spend more money on a good set of LCR speakers.

$80 isn't going to get you anything that will blow you away, but will get you something that's a good starting point and will sound better than the built-in speakers in any monitor.

Check out Steve Guttenberg's review of the Lepai LP2020TI and Dayton B652-Air. He raved about it as an awesome $88 beginner audiophile's delight. Actually cheaper than that right now, since you can get the 2020TI for $19.99 and the B652-Airs for $44.99 on Parts-Express right now. Even if you pay shipping, that should come out to under $80.

Or, if you can stretch your budget just a bit, you can get the Micca MB42x's for $79.95 from Amazon, then throw in that $20 2020TI for the amp.

Otherwise, look around for second-hand (thrift stores, Craigslist, LetGo, etc.) and find something within your budget. Probably best to stay away from all the typical "PC" speakers like the logitech sets that come with very cheap, cost-cutting speakers and sub.

Samson makes some desktop monitors that feature bluetooth input. I haven't really seen any reviews for them yet. The MediaOne

Take a look at reviews for those and get at least the 4" ones. I can't expect the 3" ones would have much bass response.

Everything else listed lacks bluetooth, but you could add a standalone bluetooth reciever to any of them.

The M-Audio AV-40s get good reviews, and the Wirecutter calls them the best computer speakers.

Those are active monitors. They will be good for near field, and the amp inside them is designed with the speakers.

If you go passive plus amp you can upgrade components down the road. Maybe get the Micca MB42X and a Topping TP20, or find a good reciever (70s Kenwood, Pioneer, Marantz, Teac, Technics, etc. are great) for super cheap (0-$20) at a yard sale or thrift store or craigslist and get the Panasonic SP-BS22

u/PURPL3H3YS · 3 pointsr/hometheater

If you are in the market for a projection setup for your home theater, you should not be skimping on audio as much as you are. Don't bother with either of those systems you linked. They are bottom of the barrel systems with no way to upgrade in the future.

Your budget should really be more than $200-$300 for audio when you are putting together a projection home theater (or any home theater for that matter). You may want a decent receiver for about $200. And some of the cheapest speakers we would recommend would run you about $80 a pair. Maybe these or these for speakers. Add the matching center channel for either and you would be set. I would factor in another $100-$200 for a subwoofer if you want something decent.

If you can't increase you budget enough for all of that, we normally suggest to start off with a 2.0 system (2 speakers and the receiver) then expand as you get more funds.

Your friend sounds like he is just describing surround sound, there is no such thing as "3D" sound, just video.

Hopefully this helps!

u/MrGCar · 3 pointsr/malelivingspace

That's totally fine. They're Micca MB42-x's

I definitely recommend the speakers, but not the amp. (it gets pretty fuzzy at mildly loud volume)

u/Think_Positively · 3 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

Outside of going used and assuming you're going to order today, these Miccas are consistently recommended on this sub. Your budget would also have room to add the center now, and doing so while configuring everything properly is the best bet to achieve dialogue clarity. These guys are listed as 75 watts and your amp is 100 in stereo, so that could be bad if you're cranking them up.

These Polk RTi A1s will max your budget at their sale price, but they're larger and would be a better fit for your amp. You have some finish options with them as well. If you're OK with refurbished, A4L has the same model for $130.

Lastly, these BA bookshelfs come in just under your max. It's new old stock because the company is no longer producing speakers, but they're from a respected (while in business) company and have better specs than the speakers above.

This setup is recommended by /r/audiophile as the best speakers on a really tight budget. Here's a good review of the speakers and if you're interested, instructions on how to set up a system-wide eq that balances them even more.

> I've come to realize soundbars are the devil

That isn't the complete truth. You have to consider the audience here. Most people here are hard core (for the most part) and that is where the huge anti-soundbar sentiment comes from.

They can be decent, and work way better than built in speakers will. Hell I'm using a soundbar for my master bedroom setup mainly because I didn't want a full surround sound setup there.

> I'm looking to spend $300 as a target, but will consider up to $400 as a limit.

Main problem with this budget is you're not going to get very much. Good receivers (what I'd consider good that is) alone are in the $200+ range.

Like most will point you to Accessories4less and point you to the Denon AVR-S540BT but really it'd be the Denon 730H before the 540.

So $200 for the receiver doesn't leave you much left over for actual good/decent speakers.

But if you must the Micca MB42X's for $79 and the MB42X-C center for $70

That gets you a 3.0 setup with receiver for just under $400

u/DoTheEvolution · 3 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

this is the classic recommendation, Miccas and a T-amp, with you budget a nicer smsl-sa60 can be had

u/I3igAl · 3 pointsr/ZReviews

I would love to!

For the amp I am using the SMSL Q5 Pro as linked by /u/Hercusleaze and I am very happy with it. I bought it especially for the optical input and remote control to use with my xbox alongside my PC. A very good feature is a dedicated sub out, really makes adding a sub simple.

If you dont need all the fancy DAC built in I would highly recommend the SMSL SA36A, SA50, or SA98 depending on the power you want (this depends on how loud you want to get and what your speakers need).

For speakers I am using a pair of Micca MB42X-C in 2.0, although I got them for half off. Most people recommend Micca MB42X, a very solid all rounder at a good entry price. I set my brother with the Fluance SX-6 speakers, and he is really happy with them although they are bass heavy.

These options are solid entry level gear, and for myself I havent needed/felt like upgrading further. If you are looking for something a bit higher end I would suggest checking out the /r/Zeos guide lists or make a dedicated thread!

Can active speakers be used with a receiver? I know all you'd need for a basic turntable setup would be just the turntable and the powered speakers, but I wanted to connect a subwoofer, so for that I figured I'd need a receiver.

What I'm unsure about is whether having an already amplified signal running from this receiver to these active speakers would fry the speakers or anything for that matter.

http://m.ebay.com/itm/10-Zone-2-4-6-8-Pair-Speaker-Selector-Switch-Switcher-with-Volume-Level-Control-/261444643684?nav=SEARCH

This is what I mean by a speaker selector. Yes it's expensive, but it is cheaper than getting a 20 channel power amp (non existent) and 10 seperate volume control knobs.

I prefer vintage speakers, but they can be a pain (expensive) to up-keep. New speakers generally have better value and more features.

You can either staple the wire along the bottom of the wall of your room or you can have someone install it in-wall. For wireless, you could get the Sonos speakers. This would probably add up to more than the amp+speaker selector + speakers. But it is wireless and easier to work with.

I would reccomend getting either a Bluetooth receiver or a Sonos connect. The only advantage the Sonos connect has is the Sonos software and a bigger range.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000CZ0RL0/

The Behringer iNuke 1000,3000,6000 will give you 50, 150, 300 watts a speaker. Honestly I would get the iNuke DSP1000. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B005EHIN3A

what is your budget? I am a big proponent of passive speakers with a separate amp/dac. They sound the best to me. They do tend to take a lot of space though, so it may be tough with a smaller desk. If you want powered speakers though, the edifiers have been the best in my experience.

My current setup is:

AMP: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00F0H8TOC/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
(note: this amp doesnt support subwoofers, so look elsewhere if you want a 2.1 system. In my experience I haven't felt the need for one, but YMMV)

If you want to go the passive route, a decent setup would probably be around $150-200. If you want something with a tuner, a receiver would be a good choice over an amp.

Right now, you can get this Yamaha R-S202BL Stereo Receiver on Amazon or Best Buy for $119 which is an excellent deal. Usually this receiver costs $149 or more and Yamaha makes some of the best budget stereo receivers. Sometimes you can find this Insignia Stereo Receiver for about $99, but right now it costs higher than the Yamaha and is not worth it. Those are probably your best deals on receivers right now that won't break the bank. Most other receivers will cost you about $150 to start.

You can find a lot of good speakers under $150 and a few under $100. What you need to do is sign up for Fry's Electronics newsletter. Just this last week they sent a coupon code in my email to get the Pioneer SP-BS22-LR speakers for $58! Super good deal. Normally cost just over $100. They are sold out now, but this deal pops up quite often and they are well worth that price.

Here are more great speakers around $100 or less:

Micca MB42X speakers - $90.

Polk T15 - $100

Dayton Audio B652 - $30

Dayton Audio B652-AIR - $44

JBL Arena B15 - $79

Are you me? Also SG, been researching on 2.0 speakers & only just half set my mind on T40 because sale and free shipping.

Mackie has distributors in SG actually and you can get CR3 for S$189 from City Music.

Amazon does free shipping for M-Audio AV32 and Micca MB42X if you hit above US$125 - probably can do so if you buy a couple of records too. Kanto speakers have been on Massdrop too and maybe you can wait for their deals if you're not in a rush - not sure if shipping would kill you though.

u/SalaciousB · 2 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

These speakers, provided we are talking about the same thing, are not powered.

Micca, to the best of my knowledge, does not manufacture a powered speaker. If you have a different, powered model, then let me know what it is and I'll try to help.

The preamp in your TT is just that, a preamp-

> Definition of: phono preamp. phono preamp. An electronic circuit that amplifies and equalizes the analog output of the cartridge in a phonograph turntable. The output is boosted to a level equivalent to other audio sources such as tapes and CDs, and RIAA equalization is required to restore the original signal.

It doesn't provide nearly enough power to drive speakers. It merely amplifies the phono signal so it can be fed to an amplifier.

Ergo, if your speakers aren't amplified, which the Micca PB42x are not, you will need an amplifier in between your phono preamp and your speakers.

u/kansanonymous · 2 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

You're looking at a simple 2.0 set up for that budget.

I would go with the following:

Micca MB42X Bookshelf Speakers With 4-Inch Carbon Fiber Woofer and Silk Dome Tweeter (Black, Pair):

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00E7H8GG2

SMSL SA50 50Wx2 TDA7492 Class D Amplifier + Power Adapter (Black):

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00F0H8TOC/

I would then add a subwoofer if you feel you need it. I spent many a year upgrading from builds like this to what I have today. Enjoy what you have and upgrade at your own pace.

Let me know if you have questions.

What's your budget? Based off your table (no hate, I have the same one), I'm going to assume you're in a similar situation as me. Pick one of these three up:

http://www.amazon.com/Fluance-SX6-Definition-Bookshelf-Loudspeakers/dp/B00067OS0A/ref=sr_1_17?ie=UTF8&qid=1451552816&sr=8-17-spons&keywords=cambridge+audio+bookshelf&psc=1

Honestly, I would do them from top to bottom but that is just preference. I would buy any of them any day, but I am partial to the top because I love the look, and the middle one because of the history behind the maker. The middle ones have an insane amount of cult following in the audiophile community because they were designed by a guy who designs speakers that cost 10,000+ a piece.

So I bought myself a teac tn-300 during a sale recently and I've been truly loving it along with the vinyl I have been collecting since. However it naturally makes me want to keep improving my system and I'm looking for a good starting point.

I have been using A bose dock by directly plugging into the rear input of the device. Works fine for the time being but it would definitely be nice to start thinking of getting some actual speakers and an amp.

Could anyone recommend a good starting point to look? How much money am I really looking at spending? I'd love to hear the recommendations for my situation.

No, the amount of speakers you hooked up to the amp did not cause it to fry!

Are these the speakers she has? If so, they are not fantastic.

My suggestion: If your Insignia is dead, buy the Yamaha receiver you linked and put the rest of your $300ish budget into getting 2 bookshelf speakers. These are the cheapest suggested speakers found at the top of this sticky post.

That leaves you with 2 speakers and a sub hooked up to a receiver which will give you a solid 2.1 setup to listen to. You can then look into adding more speakers to go with a 5.1 surround setup, or adding a center channel for clearer dialogue when watching movies, or both.

Don’t feel like you have to do it all at once either, if even sub-$500 sounds like a lot. I built my own setup over the course of roughly a year.

Start with a receiver and 2.0. Then add a sub, then a center, then surrounds (or vice-versa).

u/tlopwasaflop · 2 pointsr/macsetups

If you're set on Bluetooth and want a simple all-in-one setup get these.

However, I have to recommend the Chromecast Audio - so much more reliable than Bluetooth, better sound quality, and easier to connect to. I'd pair it with this amp and these speakers. If you're feeling adventurous go this route but you'll be happy with either coming from Bose.

You can sell the unused monitor on /r/hardwareswap to recuperate some cash. Even if you don't want to get rid of it, I'd still move it so there's space for the speakers and they aren't being blocked.

u/gingenhagen · 2 pointsr/hometheater

To give you a rough idea of the quality of soundbars, if you spent more than, say, $50 on your YAS-105, you're throwing money away. These Miccas for $90 sound twice as good as any soundbar you can buy.

I'd recommend the Micca MB42x set of bookshelf speakers. Best bang for your buck out there.

Youre not going to find a new/refurbed AVR for any cheaper (thats near as good) better than the 2 listed right now so factor in at least 160+shipping for the Integra. That leaves like 100-150 for speakers which wont get you much beyond 2.0 (or if we get creative 2.1). The issue will be finding something good enough its not disposable. The problem is your attitude towards insulting a 5.1 system for something you can get from a 2.0 or 2.1 system just as easily. "making your ears bleed" and "can't hear voices" can happen with a 2.0 or 2.1 system the same as a 5.1, so when you start out being 100% against it for those reasons, without even listening to anyone else's take on it, it pits people against you.

You come here for advice, then be open to peoples advice. If you just said "I have a $200 budget, what can I get" you would have likely gotten some good answers, its your irrelevant anecdotes that are viewed as attitude and led to animosity. You're better off deleting these comments and editing your original post, as this is the forum to get an answer.

Either way, a quick search of previous threads about a limited budget pulled up a few results, and about the cheapest receiver mentioned is $160, plus $90 for a pair of speakers, already putting you at $250 without a sub.

If you can't find a replacement satellite on eBay, do this:

  1. Swap the speaker wires. If left speaker was broken, and you swap them, and that same speaker stays broken, it's actually the speaker. If the other speaker is now broken, the problem is the amp, and you need to get a whole new system.

  2. If it's the speaker itself, any old 2.0 speakers will do. Get 2 of these and connect them to these and you'll have an excellent system.

I think he just wants speakers for his computer and doesn't realize you can use bookshelf speakers to do so with an amp.

My current setup, and one I recommend to him, is as follows

Computer --usb--> Behringer UCA202 DAC --rca--> Lepai LP 2020A+ Amp --speaker wire--> Micca MB42X Bookshelf Speakers

That'll give him the dial he wants - on the amp - as well as amazing sound quality by bypassing the computer's built in DAC.

u/hack_tc · 2 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

Ah, I see now. No most amps wouldn't go to sleep on you. Yeah, you could definitely go with a small amp and passive speakers, which is my preferred setup. An SMSL Q5 Pro ($100-130) is a decent little amp with enough audio inputs for you, some Micca MB42X's are a local favorite for smallish desktop speakers ($90), and you could even add a small sub like a Dayton 10" for ($120). A pretty decent 2.1 setup (if you have room for the sub).

u/Umlautica · 2 pointsr/audiophile

Enclosure size depends largely on the stiffness of the woofer suspension an if designed correctly, in-wall speakers won't perform well in a typical bookshelf enclosure. You'd need the T/S specs of the speaker to know what the right size is too. There's a good chance they need a large enclsoure since it's using the wall as one.

The cheapest and easiest approach would be to build an open baffle for them. Even after that, the performance might be questionable and it might be better to get a pair of Micca MB42x.

u/iriantuu · 2 pointsr/hometheater

Based on advice from /u/ZeosPantera I grabbed the following:

Denon AVR-S500BT Refurbished

Micca MB42X Bookshelf Speakers

I've been very happy with the setup. My goal was to have a flexible system for entertainment (video and music) in my bedroom that had good enough quality that I could follow movie dialog without resorting to subtitles (I have a mild mid-range hearing loss).

YMMV depending on your desires and needs, of course.

u/jcreigh · 2 pointsr/buildapc

I don't have them personally, but the standard recommendation from /r/audiophile is the Micca MB42X

u/awesomesauce1414 · 2 pointsr/battlestations

Well there's a few options for you here. There's these, which I have a highly recommend. Fluance SX6. Or a cheaper yet still apparently great set of Micca speakers that are quite a bit smaller. These both require something like this to power it, along with some speaker wire and maybe banana plugs. You could also get some powered Audioengine A2
's
. Those shouldn't require an amp. Overall I would highly recommend taking the plunge into quality sound equipment. I myself would buy the fluance one's again but it's up to you. The cost is most definitely worth it when it comes to these speakers.

Like others have said, check out Micca and JBL. They both make great speakers for budget setups. If I were you and wanted to keep my budget at around $200, I'd go for the Micca PB42X speakers which are around $100 each (Amazon link) or if you want to go slightly cheaper, the older Micca MB42X are around $80 each.

these aren't 4k panels, I think the TV either downscales 4K up to 30fps or really does have HDMI 2.0 so it downscales 4k up to 60fps

Micca MB42X

Dayton Audio B652-AIR

Everything else should suffice until you can upgrade to an integrated amp or receiver.

Also, if you haven't in a year or ever, please replace your stylus/needle.

Best of luck!

Get a good cheap pair of bookshelf speakers (or smth more expensive) connect them to an amp and either use a splitter cable to plug it directly into mobo's integrated sound or use a usb dac (with rca cables). You will also have to spend some money on speaker wire to connect speakers to amp.

EDIT: another option is to skip amp part and get a pair of powered studio monitors.

u/gregers007 · 2 pointsr/vinyl

Welcome to the club and happy birthday.

As for speakers, I’d recommend Micca MB42X any day. At $90/pair, they’re a great buy.

Micca MB42X Bookshelf Speakers With 4-Inch Carbon Fiber Woofer and Silk Dome Tweeter (Black, Pair) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00E7H8GG2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_i_1k.3Ab6RQV1X5

But you’ll definitely want to head over to r/zeos and do a little research before committing. Audio can be an expensive habit, so you might as well get the best bang for your buck.

u/LoveOfProfit · 2 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

You should give us a hint of your budget.

If you get some Micca MB42x and pair it with a cheap amp such as this SMSL 36 for $50 you'll be in a good spot for under $150.

If you want a subwoofer, the infinity reference r10 is on sale currently for $120 (down from $400 MSRP). You just need to combine it with a different amp that can feed a signal to it such as the Topping MX3

u/richardsim7 · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

It's a little more, but you could get a set of passive speakers and a small amp, you'd need some speaker wire and a 3.5mm to RCA Phono cable to connect it to your PC, but it will sound way better than those desktop speaker packages from logitech etc

So, if you like the convenience of the Pill, but want more ooomph, I've gotta recommend the Logitech UE Boombox. It's been discontinued, but you can get new or practically new models on eBay for 70 bucks or so.

I've owned a lot of nice Bluetooth speakers, and some decent audio gear, and pound for pound nothing really touches the thing.

I would recommend heading up your local Goodwill or other thrift store for speakers and an old receiver. With a pretty minimal amount of footwork, you can grab something that probably cost $1000 back in the day for $100.

Skip Marantz as it's really over priced at this point, but brands like Realistic, Rotel, Sansui, and Pioneer are still affordable. They look cool as shit, and have a nice distinctive sound. You can probably get a low-end 20 or 30 W per channel Realistic off craigslist or at your local thrift shop for 30 bucks.

You can then get a nice set of Boston Acoustic or Polk audio speakers for another 50 bucks. Just make sure the foam around the subwoofers is fine, and that the tweeters aren't busted. Most people are happy to hook them up for you to listen to.

If you don't want to mess with older stuff, grab one of these :

ttps://www.amazon.com/dp/B017W13OR0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_hg16xbX21C1NM

And a set of these:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00E7H8GG2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_Ih16xb227QN96

And two of these:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B011LXUKE0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_5j16xb4JV5NZ5

Alternatively, grab the amp and wires new, and then get the speakers used off eBay or Craigslist or whatever. Speakers lose value at an alarming rate, but at the sub-$100 price point you're not really risking much.

For reference, I got a set of B+W CM2 speakers for $90 off Craigslist. They were almost $1000 new 12 years ago.

u/awgoody · 2 pointsr/hometheater

> Sony SS-B1000 pair

It seems to be the opinion of /r/audiophile is that nothing less than this is worthwhile. I understand that it's a little above your budget, but there's a minimum where the upgrade just won't be worth your money. Posters have tested a bunch of similarly priced speakers (not sure if they've tested the Sony's), and I'm inclined to agree that, while I've not listened to these speakers personally, these are an appropriate beginner speaker.

u/1369ic · 2 pointsr/audiophile

Not sure why you would want the l/r and the center, other than it's a good deal. Are you hoping to fill it out to 5.1 eventually?

I've never heard Fluance, but the go-to recommendations around here are one of these two Pioneer speakers, or the Miccas. Search this sub to look for reviews (and double check the model numbers if you're interested. I'm doing this from memory). If you get the Pioneers you should be able to afford the subwoofer that goes with it. Also, you can usually find a Polk sub like this one on sale.

There are better options, I'm sure, but these get a lot of recommendations for budget systems. I have a brother in law with the Pioneers and no sub and he's pretty happy.

As for hooking it up, you just need a 3.5mm to RCA jack cable like this one. Also, if your receiver has an s/pdif input you could go from the sound card to the receiver that way. If you use the first cable, the sound card will be decoding the digital into analog. If you use the s/pdif cable, your receiver will do the decoding. Depending on the DACs in the card and receiver, one might be better than the other.

u/Lenfried · 2 pointsr/buildapc

thermal compound is unneeded, your cpu cooler comes with some

mobo is overpriced, i doubt you'll need most of the bloat it comes with. a $100 mobo would do fine

unless you do heavy video editing, 32gb is completely unnecessary

crossfiring 2 low-end gpus isn't optimal, go with 1 high end card. with money saved from a cheaper mobo and less ram, you can probably go for a r9 290

if you don't plan on doing a custom water loop, a full atx case isn't necessary

sound card isn't needed as mobos come with on board audio. if you're serious about sound quality, get external dac and amp

almost all mobos have ethernet jacks, you don't need the wired network adapter

with this kind of budget, a mechanical keyboard is highly suggested.

edit: better speakers

I'm doing the exact same thing. This is my plan. (As a disclaimer, I am fairly new and a student of /r/Zeos.)

This Receiver

Front Speakers

Center Speaker

Subwoofer

If that sub is too large for the mobility you want, you could go with this, which is quite a bit smaller.

All that (with the F12) will be around $525.

If you're doing surround, which may limit mobility, I'd throw in a pair of these.

Don't forget some good quality speaker wire and banana plugs make life easier if you want to move it easily.

Pioneer BS-22-LR, $116

Polk TSi100, $150

u/fgoncalves97 · 2 pointsr/audiophile

You have many many options! I would lurk around the sub for a while to get some ideas. The suggestions that come to mind:

For speakers, going from lowest to highest price, I'd check out the Micca MB42x's, the Fluance SX6's, and the ELAC B5's.

The SMSL SA50 is a nice budget amp but (if you have the space for it) a used receiver is the best bang for your buck and will likely be more powerful.

I have the MB42x's. They're quite capable and will do just fine for me for some time. Just remember that there are so many options out there. Do your best to find the right setup for you.

Just to get started, I'd check out Zoes' 2.0 Desktop Suggestions list from his suggestions sub. His influence as a youtuber is a bit of a controversial topic on this sub but I'd say he has some good suggestions. Good luck and have fun!

Edit: I should also mention that it's always useful to demo equipment if you can. Hit up a local audio shops and demo some gear if you have the time.

u/o0jrock0o · 2 pointsr/audio

These are your best bet in my opinion. They will sound better than that logitech system, and probably last longer as well. With the logitech system you are tying yourself down to using their sub, which means that if you decide you want better bass in the future you will have to either scrap the whole system and start over with dedicated speakers, or try to reuse the Logitech speakers and end up with something sub-par. With the Miccas, you can just add an RCA splitter and a subwoofer and be good to go.

If you want even more flexibility, go with the unpowered Miccas and get an amp like the SMSL SA50, which will be more power than you would ever need for those speakers for near-field (close up) listening.

To save a little money now you could also go with the Micca MB42 instead of the MB42x. The MB42x come with an upgraded crossover and according to most reviewers it is very much worth it to get the upgraded version.

If you really want your system to last a long time, you are much better off separating your components. Get a pair of speakers, get an amp for the speakers, and get a sub all as separate components. That way, you can upgrade components individually in the future without needing to scrap the whole system like you would need to do with the Logitechs. This also applies if a component breaks; you can replace one thing at a time. And even without upgrading, you will still end up with a much, much better sounding system for not much more money.

u/AsbestosOwl · 2 pointsr/audiophile

I just recently ordered the Fluance SX6 speakers. I haven't heard them yet but they seem to be a great set of budget speakers. They are passive but you can get an amplifier that will drive them for very cheap. The speakers cost $130.00 USD. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IEDL8EM/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

There. 5 pairs of those for under 500, and they will blow the Logitech speakers out of the water in every aspect.

As for amps, you either need an industrial amp with 10 outputs, or buy 5 smaller amps. SMSL makes good stuff, and doesn't cost a whole lot.

Wire ($18): http://www.amazon.com/Monoprice-50-Feet-High-Purity-Oxygen-Free-Speaker/dp/B001UNLTVK/

With tax and shipping though, that is a bit over your budget, should be around $350-400. It should sound really good, plus leave you the option to add a center channel and surround if he ever wants it.

If you want to cut the initial cost, you could forego the sub until a later date and it would still sound very good and that would get you back into budget. You could also forego the sub to purchase the more expensive receiver if that appeals to you. The nice thing about a receiver is it gives you lots of options for future upgrades.

If you are considering spending that much (current price for ProMedias seem to be $140) you can get a really good 2.0 bookshelf speaker set for less, that will most likely sound much better (again, audio is subjective blah blah, the usual). If you really want a subwoofer right off the bat, the ProMedia's sub isn't too bad, so I can see why you'd go with that. They are one of the best speaker sets labeled "computer speakers" out. And if piecing together a system isn't your cup of tea, I can respect that, it's not for everyone, and you seem turned off by it by the tone of your blurb about it ("real" audiophiles DO get snobbish at times, totally agree, I always tend to look for "entry" audiophiles to talk to for advice)

Audio Problem I'm having, hoping someone knows the answer. Six months ago I bought an Amp Lepy LP-2024A and Micca MB42X speakers. When I would be on my computer with the amp on but not listening to anything, the speakers would make a whistling/swirling/popping/static/white noise. If I played any sort of sound through the computer, I couldn't here the noise anymore.

A month or so ago I moved the MB42X's to my living room and put a pair of Micca COVO-S speakers on the Lepy amp. The noises are still happening, but I'm noticing them more now, and I can sometimes here it over music or games that I'm playing.

Is it just a bad amp? I also have an SMSL DAC+Headphone amp powering some Philips headphones. The headphones do not make any noise.

I bought those Miccas for my dad for Christmas, and they surprised the hell out of me. Those little speakers have punch. They sound fantastic, and they are not lacking for bass. There are better options, of course, but those Miccas and an inexpensive amp like the SMSL SA-50 would be a damn good setup for not a lot of money. Down the road you could add a subwoofer like the Martin Logan Dynamo 300 and I think you'd be very happy.

Thinking of getting these then a sub and surround sound speakers later. This seems future proofed and it's on the recommended list, what are your thoughts?

If you're looking for great shelf speakers to use look no further than

I highly recommend them unless your budget is more than $200 for the speakers themselves. These can be pair with anything from a lepai amp to a high end stereo system. Add in a subwoofer for super good lows.

u/fuzzy_logikk · 1 pointr/battlestations

figures, I got more help here than in the /r/audiophiles help thread.

I asked specifically if the lepai could drive them ><

so I need a better amp if I want to get those speakers? I thought since it was 8 ohm instead of 4 it would require less power. the reccomended speakers by audiophiles are 8 ohm speakers. these ones: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00E7H8GG2/ref=s9_simh_gw_p236_d0_i2?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=008BGQ481WBZ6WK27GHB&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=1688200382&pf_rd_i=507846

Am I overspending for any of those components unreasonably? I come from the PC world, so I want to make sure I'm not putting a top end part among middle tier stuff and making the top end part a little pointless in doing so.

Right now, I have 3.5mm from my green line out to an amp then to the speakers.

I also have another 3.5mm from my orange center/sub out to my red RCA connection on the sub.

Try this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B00E7H8GG2/ref=dp_olp_all_mbc?ie=UTF8&condition=all

If that doesn't work, just click on "Used & new". It's probably easier to view on the desktop version of the site.

u/deeveeance · 1 pointr/hometheater

Ahh then you ARE going for low cost... Ok, well for that price range, you can't go wrong with the SMSL SA50 for $70, and a set of Micca MB42x monitors that can usually be found for around $80.

If you want to go LOWER on the budget, head towards the Dayton Audio B652's that are 1) cheap, at $40, 2) still better than any Soundbar/Box solution, and 3) relatively portable.

With whatever speaker you choose, you can upgrade to something bigger, if you want, since the Amp is VERY flexible, with 50w of power per channel, so you can even drive some low/mid range tower speakers.

Add in about 10 more dollars for speaker cable, and you should be ready to go. Also, the Amp connects via RCA, so make sure you take adapters/cables into consideration as well since I do not know the TV/components you'll be connecting to.

I have a "similar" setup with the Micca monitors and a cheaper Lepai amp ($20) BUT also made it battery powered to take with me on mass bike ride gatherings, and they are LOUD.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

u/brutalkitten · 1 pointr/hometheater

That's doable, so a center is still a possibility. Cool. So my shopping cart is Denon AVR-300, Micca MB42X, and Micca MB42X-C Center.

Eventually we will tack on the rears but I think this will be a good start, definitely an upgrade from current very old receiver and big box speakers. Will hunt for some wall mounts for the speakers too. Once we get it and have it set up I'll try to remember to post a photo!

u/dreamer_2142 · 1 pointr/BudgetAudiophile

Oh I see, based on the reviews, I can see some people paired Dayton with Micca MB42X, do you think its one of the best speaker to pair it with Dayton or you have better alternative?

u/BruceKaneWayne · 1 pointr/BudgetAudiophile

The first pair you have linked are the 42’s and not the 42x’s. The 42’s don’t have a crossover built-in (although you can order one from the company for around $30 USD I believe and install it yourself)

It looks like the 42x’s cost considerably more over on Amazon’s ca website. Here is what they should normally go for. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00E7H8GG2/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1522937506&sr=8-1-spons&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=micca+mb42x&psc=1

Can’t speak for the second pair, but they look to only have a woofer so I wouldn’t expect too much range out of them

You won’t be able to connect them with a regular 3.5mm. They’ll need an amp and speaker wire. Most in here suggest a $20 Lepai amp, I got a $50 SMSL amp. But if you have space, getting an old stereo amp from a thrift shop will work fine on the cheap, and is what I was using for speakers before moving to a smaller place.

Long post short, if you find the 42x’s for a lower price you can probably get them and a small amp for the price of the Logitechs. If not, I’d check out some of the other suggestions from people here.

I think I decided I don't want to go all out for my first entry-level audio, especially since I just moved into a new apartment, i want to keep the volume reasonable low. But i do want the surround sound effect.

I was thinking about just getting these speakers since they are cheap and im sure will be a huge upgrade for me coming from just regular TV speakers from a 2008 plasma TV.

Thanks for the guide! I just want to make sure I understand everything.

I just bought the Denon AVR-E300. I'm looking to set up a 2.0 system for my TV, to eventually upgrade to a 3.1 and, when I get more space, a 5.1 system.

Per this post, the Denon acts as an amp, correct? So now all I need are two bookshelf speakers and the speaker wire (which you recommend be at least 14/2 Awg 250-Feet In Wall Speaker Wire)?

I have about a $200 budget for the speakers. Between the Micca and the Fluance it seems like you prefer the Fluance?

u/reckn3r · 1 pointr/hometheater

Would Micca MB42X speakers and MartinLogan Dynamo 300 sub be good to pair up with this receiver?

u/Lowoctave · 1 pointr/audiophile

Just wondering if anyone can approve(or improve) the following list for my PC set up before i place the order. My budget is $200 for a 2.0 system. I will be purchasing a sub in the future to upgrade to 2.1.

Behringer UCA202 Audio Interface, $29

Speakers: Micca MB42X, $80

Amp: MUSE M50 EX, $68

Wiring: AmazonBasics 16-gauge Speaker Wire, $7

Total: $184.00 USD

Got some RCA wires that I will be using.

Please let me know your feedback or if there are cheaper options I can go with.

Thank you in advance

Think these would do fine for a couple of these? the pictures make the stand look flimsy so I wasn't sure if I should get those or not.

u/Bring_Napkins · 1 pointr/buildapc

Dayton B652 are the budget speakers to beat at that price range.

However, a lot of audiophiles would recommend the Micca MB42X if you can bump your budget up by $30.

Of course these are only 2.0 setups. If you want a subwoofer and an amp then you couldn't spend less than a hundred.

u/happy-cig · 1 pointr/audiophile

Starting to jump down this rabbit hole of audiophilism (is that even a word?) Looking to replace my AIWA CX-NA202 from the 90s.

Was going to just settle for an edifier r1850db but with many hours of research it seems that a passive set up may be the way to go?

The first passive setup I was going to attempt to try was the -

Nobsound Mini TPA3116

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00WTOAC1M/ref=ox_sc_saved_title_2?smid=ADPE7GPX91ORE&psc=1

Micca MB42X

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00E7H8GG2/ref=ox_sc_saved_title_3?smid=AFKH6OU9WWNFS&psc=1

Which puts me under ~$150

But I have been hearing people just recommending an AVR, which I have landed on the Denon x1400 or x2400 which I may be able to pick up used for ~$200. Should I pair this with a Micca MB42X? Or are their other speakers that would work better with this?

Budget and currency - Under $300, USD
In which country are you located - USA
Where can you buy from - Amazon.com
What you want to use it for (music, movies, games, all of the above, etc) - All of the above, this will be a setup for my computer.
On a desk or in a room (or both) - On a desk in my room
How big of a space and how loud - Approximately a 12 feet x 12 feet room, not too loud and don't need much bass for now (still want the path to add a sub thou).

Thanks all in advance!

So I don't really know too much about setting up a system. Right now, I'm mainly planning on using it for music and some gaming/tv from my pc. Have a small room and not a big budget (college student), so following the recommended speakers above I'm planning on getting the Micca MB42X speakers (https://www.amazon.com/Micca-MB42X-Bookshelf-Speakers-Tweeter/dp/B00E7H8GG2).

Following this 2.1 setup (http://i.imgur.com/Z8FMJ.png), it looks like I'm gonna get this DAC (https://www.amazon.com/BEHRINGER-U-Control-Low-Latency-Interface-Digital/dp/B000KW2YEI).

The recommended amp from above, the SMSL SA 60W, is unavailable from most places. Out of these two options which one is the best for their value?

Pyle (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0036VO6G4/ref=ask_ql_qh_dp_hza)

Dayton (https://www.amazon.com/Dayton-Audio-DTA-1-Digital-Amplifier/dp/B001PNOH2I/ref=sr_1_17?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1322387040&sr=1-17)

Feel free to recommend me any other amp you think would work for ~$75 or less, it just has to have a 3.5mm input as well as an RCA input. Thanks for the help in advance friends, means a lot.

u/dakotaw7 · 1 pointr/hometheater

Gotcha. There's a lot of different ways you can go. If it were me on this budget, I'd probably do something like this.

Receiver: Denon AVRS530BT 5.2 Channel Full 4K Ultra HD AV Receiver https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XYD1RZ3/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_WoUdBb949YZF4

Bookshelf speakers: Micca MB42X Bookshelf Speakers With 4-Inch Carbon Fiber Woofer and Silk Dome Tweeter (Black, Pair) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00E7H8GG2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_fqUdBbHN3RHX1

Center channel: Micca MB42X-C Center Channel Speaker With Dual 4-Inch Carbon Fiber Woofer and Silk Dome Tweeter (Black, Each) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HHFBEK6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_arUdBb3H52KWX

That would put you slightly over budget, so you could do without the center for the time being. Next month, I'd look into a subwoofer.

Craigslist can also be your friend. But as far as new is concerned, this would sound pretty good for the money.
