The camera available in FIRST Choice isn't cheap in terms of FIRST Choice points, but it is very cheap if you buy it elsewhere. Amazon has it for $21.

This year, I would recommend a USB camera (cuts out one of the two cables needed for an IP camera). Pretty much any USB camera should work. Unfortunately the new control system is not yet available to the public and I haven't heard of any beta test teams trying out different cameras, so I don't think there will be any people qualified to give a recommendation.

Since the Lifecam 3000 is available in FIRST Choice, I would say it's a fairly safe bet.

EDIT: It occurred to me that you might be looking for a recommendation for using with the old control system (potentially for an offseason project). If that's the case, then all I can really recommend are the Axis cameras, as that's all I've really seen teams use.

Hmmm.. it seems like there doesn't exist a webcam mount meant for being under the monitor, so you may either have to DIY your own solution, or get a desk webcam like one of these(sorry if this isn't a good webcam, I just randomly picked one that looked like what I said). Good to know tho, keeping the balance between form and function is always the best idea.

OpenCV probably doesn't support your webcam. Unfortunately, support for built-in webcams is pretty abysmal in OpenCV. I had to use an external camera during development. This is the one I am borrowing from my gf:

Any cheap webcam that can plug in via USB should work.

Thank you for starting the Mac instructions. Will get them up in a few minutes

All Amazon, so you can take full advantage of that sweet, fast, free Prime shipping! Other vendors had slightly lower prices but I have the feeling that Hawaii shipping would kill the savings.

I went slightly overkill on the PSU. It has flawless stability and is fully modular. I feel like a build of this price deserves a top notch PSU, but since you're not overclocking, it's not entirely necessary. You could save $30 by going down to this one, and be fine with no performance impact.

One last thing: The GTX 1070 is coming out on June 10 at $379. It's expected to be more powerful than the 980 Ti (which a $600 card), making it much stronger and a much better value than the 970 I put in the build. It does put you over budget, and supply is likely to be an issue when it launches, so you may end up waiting longer than you'd prefer. I would personally wait, but if you'd like to dig in ASAP, I suggest buying EVGA. They have a step-up program that lets you upgrade within 90 days of purchase, provided you register your product within 15 days. Check it out and think it over!

I don't think the Logitech 900 series webcameras are that in your face and it matches my UW setup pretty well. Granted I didn't recently move over from apple fashion tech like you but I think it's about as in your face as an imac camera. I never notice it up there unless I need it and it works really well. Here is my setup on top of my u3415w with the flip cover installed, hopefully this helps.

PICS

If that didnt help maybe a round one will work? Or a square one? Or maybe just place it below your monitor? You could always just hide it behind the monitor when not in use.
