Read the Gundam Novel written by Tomino, its not officially canon, buts its the best representation of the UC0079 story.

Sticking to UC is probably the right way to go.
I don't agree with the criticism above of Wing. 00 is good, but IMO a little slow to really get going. Wing hits the ground running. As you watch more you'll notice that a lot of Gundam Protagonists are whiney b####es. Heero Yui is the total opposite. Just wish he didn't think that bike shorts were an Ok fashion Choice...
