Here's how you'll get as close as possible. After you step out of the shower:

  1. Towel-dry your hair.

  2. Use a leave-in conditioner like this one. It will act as a heat shield and protect your hair.
  3. Blowdry your hair into position while brushing it in the direction you want using heat.
  4. Once it's dry and in the position you want, add just a little bit of argan oil. You can really get in there an mix it in at the roots and your hair will still fall back into place easily because of step 3.
  5. Now add a small amount of your matte product, and make sure you emulsify it by rubbing your hands together first for an even coat. Do the same thing as the oil. Get in there and coat the roots. Remember, less is more. It's really only needed to provide a bit of texture as your hair is already in position from the blowdrying and softened from the oil. The more you add, the less hold you'll have (as paradoxical as that sounds).

Amazon. Some links below for ideas. I've purchased all of them, and haven't had any problems with them thus far. Essential oils just search for - obviously that's where part of the experimentation comes in. I use a mix of Frankincense, Amber, Cade (SUPER STRONG SMELL!!! very smoky), Black pepper, and sometimes Sandalwood. You can probably go to a Whole Foods - or similar - and find some essential oils to smell to get ideas too.

I think you should consider using argan oil on your hair like this one from Amazon. It helps to moisturize and nourish dry hair. Overall, making your hair healthier and of course easy to work with.

At the same time, you might want to re look at the type of products you are currently using. To me, it seems like you have thick hair and not all hair products work well on thick hair (fellow thick hair dude here). If pomades are your thing, I compiled a short list of a few of my favourite pomades here. Hope it helps!
