If you are looking for a gaming laptop, I just bought one of these for myself and one for the wife and it's great! https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B072QT88DG/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

  1. A thin and portable laptop is more expensive than a chunky one. And the thinner it is, the more inconsistent the fps. That is because they lack proper cooling/ventilation so both the cpu and gpu are more prone to overheating and throttling down. You can't get anything lighter than around 5lbs and expect it to play games well.

  2. Just look for one with an SSD instead of a hard disk.

  3. $1000 is a reasonable budget.

  4. You want something with a GTX 1050. The 960m is older, slower, and sucks up more power (worse battery).

Some choices (just a quick search - I can't personally vouch for any of these but their specs fit):

If you're willing to pay $700 you could get a used Alienware.

I've also heard some good things about these https://www.amazon.com/dp/B072QT88DG?tag=hidevour-20 (and really any MSI).

Or just do some browsing here and read/lookup some reviews https://www.newegg.com/Gaming-Laptops/Category/ID-363

Whatever you get, just make sure it has a dedicated GPU.

So the good news is that WoW is not very demanding when it comes to computer specs, but I assume you want to get use out of this laptop in the future as well, so let's look at the recommended specs because those are usually at least still better than the minimum for the next expansion or two. Basically we just want to go down this list and match them to the specs on a laptop, and usually a higher number on something like a CPU, GPU, or RAM is better.

The Recommended Specs
> OS: Windows 10 64-bit with latest service pack

> CPU: Intel Core i5-3330, AMD FX-6300, or better

> GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 750 Ti or AMD Radeon R7 260X or better

> RAM: 4 GB

OK- Good news is that most every laptop you can get now runs windows 10 64-bit, so that's a really hard one to miss.

As for CPU, how fast your PC can process the information, we're looking at an i5-3330, it isn't super important that you know what that means, just that you want an i5-xxxx where that number is at least 3330 with intel or you'll have to look a bit more for comparisons with ADM just because of how they name their parts.

GPU is easy again, you generally just want something with a 750 Ti (note that this is slightly more powerful than a 750, but anything above 750 should still be fine) or higher with Nvidia, or 260X or higher with AMD.

Then RAM is easy again, just 4GB or more.

I don't know what your price range is, but here are some laptops that fit this build:

MSI GL62M - $800

Acer Aspire E15 - $580

Dell Inspiration 5000 Gaming - $639

Asus P-Series - $499

All of these should do fine, but if you don't need a laptop I would suggest building a desktop. It is much easier to upgrade over time and lets you adapt to what you need it to do instead of having to upgrade the entire laptop.

Here's a link to a build that you could use It's from PC part picker so all of the items here are compatible and will fit together, you can mix and match things to fit what you want. It pulls the lowest prices and shows you where to get parts from with links - $826

A GTX 1050 is a graphics card. I have found some laptops on Amazon that I would recommend:

This Acer Nitro has good specs for the money and isn't too thick but it does look quite gamer which can be a turn off. - https://www.amazon.ca/Acer-Gaming-Laptop-i5-7300HQ-Windows/dp/B071JLXGCW/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1521221922&sr=1-1&keywords=Acer+Nitro+5

This Asus looks like it might be slimmer and looks more normal but it has a slightly worse graphics card but has more storage. A 1tb SSHD instead of a faster but smaller 256gb SSD. https://www.amazon.ca/Asus-Powerful-i5-7300HQ-Quad-Core-Processor/dp/B076H6X5SS/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1521221963&sr=1-1&keywords=ASUS+FX503VD

The MSI one is very pretty imo but only has the 2gb 1050 instead of the 2gb 1050 ti.
https://www.amazon.ca/MSI-GL62M-7RD-1407-Performance-SteelSeries/dp/B072QT88DG/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1521221994&sr=1-1&keywords=MSI+GL62M+7RD-1407

This Asus one is very thin and looks sorta like a macbook. It has a 2gb GTX 1050 but it sure is beautiful.
https://www.amazon.ca/Asus-M580VD-EB54-VivoBook-Multimedia-i5-7300HQ/dp/B072C7TNBZ/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1521222018&sr=1-1&keywords=ASUS+M580VD-EB54

This MSI one has the i7 instead of the i5 in most of them but doesn't look as good imo and only has the 2gb. It is also $100 more but the i7 is quite a lot better.
https://www.amazon.ca/MSI-GL62M-7RDX-1408-Performance-SteelSeries/dp/B071K1Q8TK/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1521222038&sr=1-1-fkmr0&keywords=MSI+GL62M+7RDX-140

If you find a laptop that you think you like just reply to me with it and i'll check it out for you too see if it's worth the money. The main thing is too look at the specs and look at the build to see what you would prefer. These laptops will run almost anything that you would run on your Mac and if the software isn't avaliable which is very rare it would have alternatives. Windows usually is a lot better than MacOS.

You said about editing videos which the i7 would be better for but it wouldn't be a massive difference since they have the same GPU. The GTX 1050 would get over 100fps on Fortnite. They would all run Microsoft office and stuff like that. Hope this helps

Edit: Changed the links to the same laptops for Canada. They are more expensive due to the Canadian dollar not being as good but still a good deal.

AFAIK, CAD programs are fairly GPU-heavy, and having a better GPU could offer better performance. as for whether or not the MX150 would be sufficient, i'm not sure. what's your budget?

Edit- i found AN acer swift 3, this one, which does not appear to have the MX150 chip in it. maybe i'm not seeing it, or maybe it's the wrong model, but my point is you could probably find something with a better card for around the same price, for example, this. which has a better GPU. as a side note, i have not done any research into 7th gen vs 8th gen processors, so i can't tell you how much of a difference that will make.

Edit2: this is a comparison of the CPUs of the two laptops that were mentioned above. note the performance increases of 0-10%.

this is the comparison of the two GPU's. note the 1050 has 17-50% gains in performance.

Would this be a good laptop for $700?

The $700 budget is actually really tight and I wont be able to go over it.

hey ive been searching for a solid laptop that would be best suitable for your requirements and and be within your budget and this MSI GL62M 7RD-1407 would be a very good option to go with, especially for the games you intend to play. it comes with a decent

  • Latest Intel Core i5-7300HQ
  • NVIDIA's Geforce GTX 1050 2G GDDR5
  • 8GB DDR4 2400MHz
  • 256GB SSD M.2 SATA
  • 15.6" Full HD eDP Vivid Color 94% NTSC 1920x1080
  • Windows 10

The 940MX graphics card won't run games that well, especially new games. Benchmarks: https://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-940MX.156033.0.html

Your best bet will be to increase your budget a little more and get one with at least a GTX 1050 if you wanna play lot of new games.

Something like this perhaps?

u/Utinnni · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

Any good notebook/laptop for normal use? i needgonna use it in my college, i'll use it for coding and stuff, maybe some light gaming.

I was thinking on one with at least 8gb ram, and an SSD 120gb or 250gb-ish, i prefer an i5, and for the GPU i don't care, it can be a 9xx series or with a 1030 (if it's better than the 9xx series) ir with a 1050.

I was thinking on getting the MSI GL62M 7RD-1407 or the Dell Inspiron but i don't know if there are some other alternatives.

u/realducksquack · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

For Ryzen systems, consider taking a look at the -> HP Envy x360. It has a Ryzen 5 2500U and Vega 8. Not bad, but you can get better configuration with your budget. A better system IMO will be the -> MSI GL62M. You will get a i5 processor, a GTX 1050, 8GB RAM and SteelSeries keys. Best if you can try them out at your local and see if it works for you. Good luck!

u/cyreilv7 · 1 pointr/LaptopDeals

I think there are better deals out there. The GTX 960M is an okay graphics card but not worth it for $700. Since black friday is coming up, I would wait to see if you can get a laptop with the GTX 1050ti or at least a 1050 for around $700. Also, an i5 processor would suffice if you're just looking to game and handle normal tasks.

So far, these are great laptops at a similar price (you decide if they look professional or not):

idk, 600$ and gaming and portability is a bit difficult. The best I can do is this MSI. I have personally had a bad experience with MSI before. Their build quality is usually lacking. And this model seems to be chunky and seems hefty. But it has the specs. It will do what you want it to do. I just don't think it would be able to handle constantly being carried around.

If you can somehow scrape some more money, this Lenovo is a good option. Fast storage, capable in gaming, and not too big. Heard good things about it.
