I only played a demo back then, and it was great, but the AI would always get stuck with cargos in the hyperspace node.

On the "something like it" side I would recommend My Time Among the Stars: Tales of the Fading Suns by Bill Bridges. It is set in a universe with a similar style to the WH40K but with a less grimdark tone. And the ebook is 1.85. Best deal I've ever got on a book that good.
Back to the WH40K I really liked the Eisenhorn trilogy, and it's a great gateway into the WH40K universe.
