We use it mainly to mask the sounds of the creaky floors of my husband and I walking around while my son is sleeping. I absolutely love it! He's had it since birth and he shows no sign of dependency. There has been several instances where I've forgotten to turn it on and my son has slept fine. We still bring it on trips but that's mostly to cancel out other noises.

We've only used the rain setting and it works perfectly. Even if there is some level of dependency, I see it as very minor in comparison. Many adults sleep with fans for the same reason.

We have a yip yip chihuahua, as well as a lab who does a very good "big dog" bark. At first our daughter didn't' react much, because she was used to those sounds in utero. Later, about 3 months in she started reacting. We used that time to train the dogs a bit with removal from the situation. Every time they barked at something unwarranted, they were immediately removed to the bathroom for a few minutes.
The bigger issue was the snowplows. holy cow!!!! All night long, but not constant or consistent. This magical machine made a big difference! (we just didn't turn it up all the way because it can be pretty loud)

They usually will watch that while they're getting their diapers changed. They also have the TinyLove Take Along Mobile that's hooked to their cribs. That thing runs for 30 minutes and just sips batteries... they last forever. And its not a huge investment, so I'm not heartbroken that they'll only be using it for another month or so. The sound machine/projector will have a longer life as long as they quit throwing it off the dresser.
I didn't like that star projector because it reminded me too much of this which is the other projector my daughter has in her room. I definitely like the idea of the ocean projector with the timer because the longer you leave things like that on the quicker they wear out. its so weird that we have the same stuff haha
