I would not spend money on a 16GB internal drive, period

I can verify that this one works https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00B3X72OU/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Depending on what kind of condition your machine is in, you probably should just fix the LCD. Because you have the i7 version, buying another x220 with ~$150 would only be a downgrade to an i5. You can buy a new IPS panel for about $45 on amazon, and if you're going to get an msata, you should consider a mydigitalssd 128gb drive, which I bought for $60. The msata port runs on sata 2, so it doesn't matter to buy high bandwidth msata ssd's like the Samsung evo 840, because you won't actually get that speed. My x220 boots windows 8 in about 2-4 seconds.

If the panel doesn't work, then you could just buy a refurbished x220, and use the IPS panel in that one along with the SSD. You would have a hard time finding a refurbished x220 with an ips for $150

I was all set to jump in here and explain how awesome ChromeBooks are for this. The Acer C270 is $200 and I really only charge mine once every 3-4 days. I prefer it over a tablet anyday. It's rather lightweight and fits nicely into whatever backpack you're carrying. The instant on is amazing. It's truly instant when it 's "sleeping" and 7 seconds if you actually power it off (I rarely do). You use the base OS for all your web browsing, note taking/coding via Caret, and native support for Netflix/Amazon Prime. Then you install Crouton alongside that to get a Ubuntu installation. I just switch to it with a keystroke.

Then I realized this was in /r/androiddev and I wasn't quite sure how well Android Studio would work, but I found someone has already gone down that path. The author of the link below had some good results.

At the bottom of the document he suggests swapping the SSD with a larger one. He links to a 32GB one, but I've often considered dropping in a 128 GB SSD. All told, you'd still be under $300.

FWIW you can pick up one of these for pretty cheap. Running one in my NUC with no issues.

Thanks for the help - the drive is a 120gb mSata made by mydigital ssd this guy: https://www.amazon.com/MyDigitalSSD-128GB-120GB-Bullet-Proof/dp/B00B3X72OU

That makes no sense. That's like saying you don't want to compromise on something so you compromise even further. If you go with the 16GB and use this SSD it is roughly the same cost as the 32GB model and you don't have to sacrifice the speed by using an SD/USB. On top of that you don't have the added complexity of multiple drive locations.
