We didn't buy a modem/router combo because of the trouble we had with the ones provided by CenturyLink.

Here is the modem and here is the router.

$150 well spent honestly (but you can probably get them for less if you shop around).

Define custom firmware? Are you looking for something that will run DD-WRT or Tomato?

I don't know of any Modem/Router Combos that support DD-WRT. If you want something like that then you should just get a plain Jane modem like this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0085MRFVW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_oFO3BbXMJZYSJ

Or use whatever your ISP gives you and just put it in Transparent Bridge mode and use whatever router you want that supports custom firmware.

> As described your AT&T modem/router is the NAT device, and as you have acknowledged they are garbage. If you have U-Verse TV

You merely indicated that you wanted to plug straight into your PC, so neither of these suggestions have wifi capabilities...

I used a Netgear DM111PSP for years and even hooked one up recently for a neighbor (past year or two) and it's running without any issues. It's fairly straightforward, not many bells and whistles. Might be a bit of an effort to find one new, tho... I think the DM200 is the upgrade/replacement model nowadays?

I haven't personally used a D-Link DSL-520B but, based on some cursory searches, it also appears to also be a decent option. I'd probably give it a try if my current modem went on the fritz.

Hope this helps.

Happy Hunting!
