Wired is always preferred. I had to update my route to get better performance. What kind of router are you running?
This is on sale for $59, it's running AC1900/Dual band gigabit router and would be an affordable upgrade over an older router.

If your router is far away from your console you may need a range extender. I upgraded to this a couple of months ago when I bought a new house. Between the two I am covered throughout my house and my yard.
