You do realize going full frame, standing in the same spot you would need more than a 300mm lens for more zoom. Your crop factor actualy helps you shoot longer zoom shots there. There is a reason the D500 is such an amazing wildlife camera compared to full frame... you get longer range for no increase in price. If you are going to buy a 70-300 for full frame you are looking at the same range as your 55-200 has now. So you would have to buy something like a 100-400 or 150-600, and those work on both cameras... As far as going wider, get a wide angle lens then.

for example is a hell of a lot cheaper than you will get a wide angle lens for a full frame.

is the full frame equivalent for that, well its close enough to it.

Honestly for what you have said, for birds, the Sigma or Tamron 150-600's are amazing for the price, you don't get much cheaper for more zoom.

For spiderwebs and such, a 50mm 1.8 or the 35mm 1.8 primes are great, and they can be your portrait lenses too (as a side note, the DX versions are so much cheaper than the FX versions, you can buy the 50 and the 35 for DX for the same price you get the 85mm for Fx for same fields of view)

If you really want a good wide angle lens. This is what you would buy, it's just under £1000 so it is within your budget. But be advised that this is an expensive piece of glass. You have the option of 16-35mm or 14-24mm. You should read on both of them to see which suits your needs better.

You should always buy lenses before bodies. As the value of a camera body depreciates far more per year than a good glass.

Lets just say my budget is smaller, as I'm hobbyist level.

So I was considering used D700 (around $650) and 16-35mm f/4G (around $800.)

Does that sound like a good value for a hobbyist level?
