Great advice about the Rebel, I've heard good things. Myself, I'm in the Nikon camp.

I bought a used D70 off CraigsList for $200 and a new 50mm lens from Amazon for $130. Buying a used body is scary, since I knew nothing. I took a photographer friend with me to handle the gear before I threw down the cash. It sounds like you may not have that resource available, but CraigsList can be a great outlet for gear once you're comfortable!

I had a tragic day roll around where I lost my D70, so I bought a new Nikon D3200:

Comes with a kit lens, it works, takes wonderful photos and video as well.

/u/bramsey89 has a lovely portfolio but do note that they're all pretty heavily post-processed. That was the hardest thing for me. When I first started playing with my camera I came to my photographer friend in tears.

"My pictures look like shit!! Yours always look so good, what am I doing wrong?!"

And she asks me, "Well, what are you doing after you take the picture?"

"Nothing."

And she laughed at me, in a "oh bless her heart" kind of way and took one of my photos and played with it and it's beautiful.

So play with them both! Once you pick a team, that's your team! Really, from my experience and my conversations with folks, the differences between Canon and Nikon come down to how the camera feels and the menu setup.

Also, Costco has great packages for cameras and you can buy SquareTrade warranties after the fact. I bought my Nikon 3200 off Amazon, but Costco had a package which included the camera, the kit lens, a zoom lens, bag, memory card and book for $800 or so.

Good luck!! The best part? If all my stuff looks awful, because I'm still learning, I just delete it and move on. =)

I'm saving up for a New Camera hopefully after I graduate I can gift myself - because taking pics with the phone is simple, but not for lasting memories (grainy/unclear, etc) - I want to capture the kids more (I used to with an older one then it got old and doesn't work as well and now the kids play with it).

Saving Private Ryan - we just watched this on D-Day anniversary.

This is such an awesome contest, Mr. Nice Guy and City Buddy. :3

The only thing I neeeeed right now is a new phone, but I cannot find the one I would like on Amazon. Sadly, my friend threw me into the pool with my phone in my pocket and it is now ruined.

If I have to choose something big of my wishlist, it would probably be this guy off my DREAMING BIG list.

Under $20, I would much rather a surprise! (If I win.) Now c'mon...gimme. :3

Thanks for the contest you two. <3
