If this is the same camera then I'd go with a mid-level Nikon or Canon.
For $100 more you can get a Nikon D5100. I have the 5100 and use it for night/star photography. Best choice I ever made. Even my local shop recommended Nikon for night photography. They said Nikon's noise cancellation was superior to Canon's, but I've never used a Canon so I don't know for sure.
That's the plan!
This is the camera

I am new at this, just going after a passion.
My dream Nikon and the lens... Someday it will be mine. Oh yes. It will..be mine..
Get a Nikon D5100 and this book.
Or ... go to your local public library and look for a photography book. Dewey Decimal 770.
Wondering if either of these are good deals?
T2i with things for $299
Nikon D5100 $291

I got this recently and I love it.
I'm not a pro, in fact, I don't know a great deal about photography but it's been vary enjoyable using that camera and all the photo's come out clean and sharp with a 50mm prime lens.
Nikon D5100. Buy used and throw the rest of your money at a tripod.
I have the Nikon D5100 and I absolutely love it. It meets all of your requirements if you get a lens with VR, such as the kit lens (18-55mm). I currently only have two lenses - the 35mm f/1.8 and 50mm f/1.8. I also highly recommend an external flash. It is the most important camera accessory I own.
Here are some pictures that I have recently taken with my D5100.

Can someone with this lens tell me where the filter diameter size is located?
I already know what it is, I just need to know where it's printed/etched on the lens.
I was wondering if there was any downside if I buy my camera from Amazon or Best Buy. I live in some what small town but there is a Best Buy in town and the financing looks good on the camera - 18 months no interest. Or I could just buy it outright from Amazon. I'm looking to buy a Nikon d5100 amazon link
How much is it from the local shops?
I'm from Australia and Amazon in America is usually cheaper than retail over here. (Paying for intercontinental shipping sucks though.) If you don't mind grey market goods, people from Hong Kong sell stuff on eBay for really cheap, and often ship for free, so check that out!
Grey market = international goods, usually not very well covered by warranty. Also known as "street price".
For a first digital camera, I'd even recommend looking at your local craigslist, gumtree.com, Keh.com, etc. and other secondhand sellers.
Photography newbie. Looking to get started and I've decided on a d5100:

Is this two lens bundle or a good deal? Or am I better off getting just the camera and some other len/lenses?
A Nikon D5100 to be specific lol. I know the 5200 is out but the 5100 is more than good enough for me! I've been saving for it slowly but surely but life happens.. one day!
I use a Nikon D5100. I'm totally a noob and this was an old camera, but it seems to be able to do some "okay" videos...I'm sure the pros out there know way better ones, but this one you can get used in the $250 range.

I need a DSLR for a digital photography class. I'm trying to find a cheap one and this seems to be the best so far. I'm a little worried about the age though. Will that be a problem? And is there a cheaper camera I should go for? I want to go into film, so I'd like to have a camera, but I want to do post-production and vfx, so I don't need anything too fancy. Just something to tool around with.
FreddieW uses a DSLR in many of his shoots. Honestly, for $1000 it might not be a bad idea to get a DSLR and a decent lens. 'Pro' video rigs are very expensive (one of the video cameras FreddieW shoots with is ~$5000), and if you're willing to do some work a DSLR-based setup could be easier to work with.
If I were to pick a Nikon, I'd say go with the D5100. It has a swivel LCD which would be helpful for videography. Amazon is having a very good sale right now on bodies + lenses, so you may be able to save on that.
If you do go with a DSLR, make certain that it has a jack for external mic. Some of the entry-level models do not, and that is pretty important for video.
This would be a great starter camera.
