The Tx30 (T430 and T530) can use either the mobile Sandy or Ivy-Bridge CPU's (sockets are identical and should support with default BIOS). If heat is a concern stick to 35W TDP chips, there are two QM's at that TDP (Core i7-3612QM and 3632QM). You can use up to a 45W TDP QM (Quad Mobile, 4C/8T) chip but you'll more than likely want to upgrade the HSF (Heatsink & Fan). If you upgrade make sure you're using a genuine 90W AC adapter and not the lesser 65W version. When you redo the thermal compound use something like Arctic Silver 5.

List of Ivy-Bridge chips, Url should bring you to the Mobile section:

The Tx30 supports DDR3L (1.35v, low volt) up to 2600MHz with stock BIOS, no mod required. Doesn't matter what Intel, Lenovo or any other sites state since their information is out of date. Fastest sticks that are compatible and available would be these which I use in my T430:

This is the mSATA SSD I use and would advise others to get if they're browsing around looking at options for the Tx30:

I'm still using the HD panel in mine so I can't really offer advice there. Couple things you can do with the ExpressCard34 slot is add USB or an eSATA port with an adapter. I use it to connect to a desktop GTX 970 card to play games with. Some might find it useful having the extra cuda cores for programs that need the extra muscle or for driving additional screens. The mSATA SSD is best used for the main OS and if you get a drive caddy stick to a Nimitz brand from Amazon:

Lastly if something breaks and you need a part you'll want to keep this bookmarked, its the FRU BOM aka parts list:

I use the Nimitz caddy. It fits perfectly in several ThinkPad models and has 4.5 star feedback on Amazon. It's in my T530 right now, with a 500GB spinning plate drive inside it. By contrast, I bought one of those cheap caddies, and it wouldn't even fit in my T430! The bezel's not properly cut for it.

Ultrabay ssd for the CD ROM. I'm not sure if it works for the x230 but on my t430 I have a second ssd and it works great.

I got this caddy quite a while ago and it fits excellently, sitting flush just like the OEM Lenovo DVD drive. Not sure why their picture of it mounted in a laptop looks so awful. I can honestly say it sits even more snugly and OEM-like than the actual OEM Dell caddy I have for my Latitude E7470.

I cant find the one i bought but i think this is very similar or even the same: https://www.amazon.com/Nimitz-Drive-Caddy-Lenovo-Thinkpad/dp/B00NAMU8NO?keywords=t430+caddy&qid=1537506368&sr=8-1&ref=mp_s_a_1_1.

I strongly recommend you to install the hdd at the internal bay and a ssd on the caddy, bc the caddy is more likely to suffer vibrations and other kind of stuff that is bad for a hdd. But its also easier to steal it as the t430 has hot swapping and the internal bay has a screw. For me its not a problem bs it looks like a dvd and almost any computer of my coworkers nor normal people around me has that kind of feature and dont know that it can be done.

If you google around, most laptops can have the optical drive swapped for an additional 2.5" HD mount as well. My T430 has a 240SSD and a 1TB 2.5 HD. example
