9 Innings is a book about the state of baseball in 1982, seen through the lens of a single game between the Orioles and Brewers at County Stadium. It goes into some of the history of the teams and people on them that got them to that point. A great read, the author was a big time editor for magazines and newspapers at the time.
Dan Okrent's Nine Innings is probably my favorite baseball book of all time.
He dissects a single game played on June 10th, 1982, between the Milwaukee Brewers and the Baltimore Orioles, inning by inning, very nearly pitch by pitch... and in the process you get a deep, behind the scenes look at how Baseball works, both on and off the field.
While the names are dated now (Cal Ripken was a rookie, Bud Selig was just the owner of the Brewers, for example), the game was just about any other game in a season filled with games. Give it a read.
