Middle ground new 2ds xl cheaper build quality than the other models and no fancy features but looks very nice and is can be purchased anywhere $141

Top tier is new 3ds xl. Best fit and finish, option to play 3ds games in 3d (other models have removed this even though they play the games there is no 3d option. Biggest downside is most versions of this console don't include a charging cable so it will cost more to get set up. This is a bundle that comes with smash Bros, zelda oot, and a charging cable for $243

Most versions of the 3ds xl are around 200 but don't come with a charge. If you go this route purchase a nintendo approved charger, as many people have purchased 3rd party chargers and put them into cellphone blocks which overcharged ther systems causing catostrophic failures.
Get yourself a 2DS system (just came out this year) or a New Nintendo 3ds system and you'll be able to play the most recent up to date version of Animal Crossing: New Leaf. The difference between the 2ds and the 3ds is that the 3ds supports an optional 3 dimensional feature that's cool to use through the system but that simply boils down to preference. 2ds is the exact same system but does not have any capability to run anything on the 3 dimensional effect. Gameplay stays the same between the systems - either route you go, you'll be set to play the game - all for under $200.

If you're shopping for both the console and the game (new), definitely get a 3DS and New Leaf. The 3DS has an enormous lineup of amazing games, and is backwards compatible so you can also play Wild World if you wanted.
I'd only recommend a normal DS (Wild World) or Wii (City Folk). If you were more on a budget. But even then, you can also cut costs by getting a used normal-sized 3DS. If you were shopping new, I'd suggest waiting for the new 2DS XL coming out for $150.
In terms of game content, in my opinion new leaf is by far the best of the series. They added so much new content in the jump between CF and NL so there's tons to do, but it doesn't compromise the core of the series. AC games in general age really well, and this one is 4-5 years old and still has an active community.
Why not buy it from Amazon, GameStop, Best Buy, or Walmart for $150? Don't think an alternate color is worth the $95 markup.

3rd party, apparently - this is the direct link to what I bought.
Sold by a company called Worldwide Distributors. There's a review on their seller profile mentioning another product shipped to the wrong region, so it's not a unique problem with them. I guess the lesson is to not trust 3rd party amazon sellers, even though I really didn't want Mario Kart 7 taking up space on the DS and they were the only company offering one without it.
I wonder if the D is reserved for sale to 3rd parties then?
