The information you put on facebook is a red herring when it comes to privacy.
Sure, you (or your friends) have the potential to accidentally put something up that may prevent you from getting a job or embarrass you with another social group, but by and large the content you share with Facebook (and therefore, with other Facebook users) is voluntary.
The real privacy risks aren't from Facebook -- they're from various organizations that collect information about you and aggregate it. Large-scale data warehouses (e.g., LexisNexis). These are the kinds of things that can cost you money, cause you to be treated differently, etc.
The book No Place to Hide by Robert O'Harrow does a good job illustrating the real issue. It's from 2006, so it's slightly dated (e.g., it talks about Carnivore, Prism's precursor spy program), but overall it's quite enlightening.
