nVidia Shield TV is a streaming box and a video games console. It runs AndroidTV and is probably the best performing consumer streaming option on the market. It is a bit pricier but performs really well and the AndroidTV ecosystem is improving all the time.

Chromecast will be good enough for most 1080p/5.1 downloads you'll find on torrent trackers. Cheap investment too at $35, and no wiring required. About a plug and play as you can get and a very low cost to try it out. Plus Amazon has a great return policy if you don't like it. EDIT: Amazon no longer sells Chromecast devices, which is weird.

But I like using my nVidia Shield TV for Plex/Netflix/YouTube/everything because it packs a hell of a punch (supports 4k@60fps and 7.1 audio) and you can run gigabit eithernet to it so you can really crank up your Plex transcode settings. It also fully supports CEC so it can turn everything on in your HDMI chain with one touch.

You can also throw Kodi + Genesis (and all those other fun plugins) on it too for when you want to watch something that's not in your Plex library and can't be bothered to download it.

Overall alot of people say it's the best Android settop box there is thus far.

Before they offered the nVidia TV-style remote as a $50 free bundle, I purchased a $15 Amazon Fire Remote instead and it works great for Kodi, Plex, etc.

I think for most people though, unless you're pushing 4k or something, Chromecast would give you the best bang for your buck. I tend to torrent 8GB 1080p/5.1 rips and they look/sound great on my 65" TV and 5.1 using just a Chromecast.

Somewhat unrelated, but if you happen to have a nVidia-based PC gaming rig, it's a great way to play those console ports we've been getting over the years too. GTAV, Metal Gear, and racing games just feel better on the couch and this box supports multichannel audio from your PC, whereas the Steam Link only supports stereo.

Spending $50 more will get you the Nvidia Shield, the best Android streaming device on the market right now.It comes with two contollers and a sleek remote. In addition to Netflix and Hulu, you can install Kodi and lookup tutorials on how to install those addons that get the pirated content.

You're not going to like the price, but honestly your best option is to go for an Nvidia Shield TV. It can do everything you're looking for and is, I believe, the only android box that can output Netlifx 4k. Is also the only box so far that can act as its own Plex server. You can install the Hulu and WWE apps on it as well and it has micro SD and USB slots.

The crappy android boxes you've seen for $100 or less are something I would stay away from if you're looking for an all-in-one solution. They may run Kodi just fine, but they won't be licensed properly for Netflix. Instead you'll get a crappy mobile version of Netflix installed, I don't even think you can watch it in HD.

I gave in and sprung for the Shield after trying other cheaper options, including the Nexus Player and I have no regrets. In fact, I want to buy another one. If you had to stay within $100 maybe try to find a Nexus Player (they are discontinued now) or a FireTV.

I got it off amazon when the first came out. Was super easy, just purchased it like any other product.

I had the same issue and ended up getting an Nvidia shield TV:

This thing is a beast so far can output 4K and stream games from my desktop to the OLED 65" without a hitch.

> there are better alternatives as a console/emulator.

For those of you who are wondering:

  • Nvidia shield TV as u/ESCthehack79 said. Quite a bit pricier, but you'll be way more pleased with the performance.

  • Raspberry Pi 3 if you can't afford the shield TV.

Thanks for the feedback chemchris! The Shield TV was at the top of my list since they started to bundle the remote control: amazon link. How does your Shield perform when directly accessing the files?

Well there is chrome-cast it uses HDMI and connects to your WiFi network. It works well on any TV with HDMI. you can stream Netflix and Viasat... to it from PC,S tablet,Phone... But if you like to connect directly to your TV from your PC well there is Nvidia shield. If you have a gforce GPU in your PC you can steam games trow you network.but its heavy priced so. Sorry if this wasn't helping but good luck

Shield currently comes with the remote for free.

See it mentioned here:
https://shield.nvidia.com/android-tv

Also see here on Amazon that the Shield + remote bundle is the same price as the Shield by itself:

After checking aliexpress it seems that I lied about the $20 price. Android ones start at $30, for example: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/High-Quality-CX919-2GB-Quad-Core-Android-4-2-Smart-TV-BOX-Stick-MINI-PC-1080P/32510889591.html https://www.aliexpress.com/item/2016-New-MK809IV-Smart-TV-2GB-8GB-Android-TV-Box-Wireless-HDMI-Dongle-Android-Mini-PC/32640473667.html

These are going to be really shitty, but the point is, they can decode 1080p h264 content just fine, unlike vita/pstv.

Personally, if I had a budget around $40 I'd get an amazon fire tv stick https://www.amazon.com/Amazon-Fire-TV-Stick-Streaming-Media-Player/dp/B00GDQ0RMG since it's less likely to be chinese crap, or raspberry pi 3 https://www.raspberrypi.org/products/raspberry-pi-3-model-b/ (if you're into tinkering with your devices)

These will play common h264 content fine (no 10-bit though. this only matters if you watch anime encodes). They won't play HEVC but it will probably be 1-2 more years before HEVC starts getting mainstream.

That's it about HDMI sticks, however:

If you want to spend more money, NVIDIA Shield TV ($200) is the best android-based option: https://www.amazon.com/NVIDIA-SHIELD-Streaming-Player-Android-Gaming/dp/B00U33Q940 - it can hw-decode h264 and hevc and generally is much more powerful device.

If you have unlimited budget, the best option is to build an intel&nvidia-based HTPC and load up plex media player on it (https://www.plex.tv/blog/introducing-the-plex-media-player/). This will play pretty much everything and will give you the best quality video output, which is highly configurable: https://mpv.io/manual/master/#opengl-renderer-options just look at these options.

tl;dr: get amazon fire tv stick

> I'm storing tv episodes not tax returns.

I mean't it'll die quickly and you'll be spending $20 for a replacement more often than you'd like.

> Are you actually implying the Shield is going away?

Hopefully not. Amazon seems to have the 16GB out of stock. Same with Newegg. But even the places that have them in stock don't include the remote in the $179. I thought you said you could get it for $179 including remote.

u/krapple · 1 pointr/AdviceAnimals

You can already do this with a cable card. The FCC mandated that cable comapnies must let you use 3rd party boxes. There just aren't that many. Your main options are Tivo and hdhomerun (silicon dust).

I personally use a hdhomerun and watch it on my android tv via live channels. It's great! The hdhomerun unit and android tv cost pays for itself because there is no cable box rental charges. You get way more functionality; kodi, streaming services, games and the entire android play store.

AI upscaling is marketing bullshit. Modern TVs do the same thing, & 2015 &2017 Shields do the same shit. Anyone claiming the Shield 2019 does upscaling better is part of the pussy fanboy club. A club for brainless cock suckers who spend $$$ to satisfy their meaningless shitty lives.

Facts:

  1. "There isn’t any more detail in the upscaled picture than you can see in the native 1080p picture, so whether or not it looks better is entirely subjective." -Rtings
  2. Not all 4k movies are in 4k. ***"***Avengers: Age of Ultron is not real 4k shot at 4k and 2k mastered." -Gamer HQ
  3. Pussy Fanboys will say AI upscaling on the Shield 2019 is better for x, y, & z reasons. Well upscaling is different from device to device. "Not every TV upscales the same though. Some 4k TVs might produce an image that is too soft. This doesn't mean that 4k is inherently worse since most TVs do not have this problem, but it is important to make sure the model you're buying doesn't have any issue with this before going through with the purchase."-Rtings
  4. There is no HDR standard. Dolby vision isn't use by most manufactures---Samsung, LG, Sony, etc---because they used their own standard like HDR 10, UHD, & etc.
  5. Dolby Atoms requires someone to spend $800 for a respectable experience.
  6. So....
    1. Dear Pussy Fanboys,
      1. All of you idiots. You bitch about things you don't have. When you get them, you bitch about having them. You are the 0.5% of the market. The other 99.5% of the market are a different kind of mindless pussies. Those are the mindless idiots Nvidia is trying fuck up the ass with the Shield 2019. As fanboys, you are use to get to the real pussy. You are nothing but trash. -Love Always, Nvidia
