> What difference occurs when there is only one sided cord in headphones, and when there are cords on both sides? I personally prefer the one-sided type. Am I missing out on something?

Just aesthetic preferences from the company.

> There are several headphones like HD600 and HD650 which are open sided and therefore the sound "leaks". While this can be a hinderance if someone wants to listen to music in a public place, what's the benefit here?

Open headphones tend to have a more speaker-like sound, often having a wider and more realistic presentation of sound over closed headphones, which some people describe as "cave-like" sounding. Open headphones will almost always have a better sound quality to performance ratio compared to a closed headphone of the same price because of the limitations of the enclosure.

>Also, cable. What's the optimum length? I have only used Sennheisers and they usually tend to have very long cables. Are extensions available and if yes, do they affect the sound quality?

Extensions are available and won't effect sound quality and optimal cable length is determined by what you are comfortable with.

>What causes bass distortion? Is there a cure for it?

Poor mastering, poor driver performance, and bad EQ settings are what I can think of. If it's the mastering there's nothing you can do about it (unless there's another mastering), if it's the headphone drivers then the headphones aren't able to accurately reproduce them, and if you have EQ on you could be introducing the distortion yourself. Do you use EQ?

Razer is a gaming company that makes products suited towards gamers. I owned a pair of Razer headphones for gaming years ago and the sound was okay, but they aren't made for music, their frequency responses and sound will be tuned for the gaming experience, generally. It's not that they're necessarily bad, but they have no purpose in a music setting if that's why you're buying them.

As for what you want, how much are you looking to spend? These might be great for you, as would be these if you don't mind dual sided cables.

u/1337Lulz · 4 pointsr/buildapcsales

imo "gaming" headphones are a waste of money. You're better off getting a dedicated pair of headphones like this, and then get a separate microphone like this. The sound, comfort and build quality are so much better. I will never buy another pair of gaming headphones again.

u/Kadori · 4 pointsr/audio

Beats are generally terrible, the studios are meh at best, and the m50s are a big step up but they aren't the greatest thing since sliced bread like some would have you believe. If you want a great sounding pair of headphones go for the brainwavs hm5 or their less expensive clone the nvx xpt100 (reviews: Brainwav hm5 audiotechnica ATH M50)

u/BlamelessVestalsLot · 3 pointsr/buildapcsales

For under $100 I heard these are amazing, but I've yet to try them sadly so I can't speak from personal experience

u/Lefthandedsock · 3 pointsr/trance

Everyone is saying Audio Technica ATH-M50s, but I honestly wasn't impressed by them.

These, however, blow me away.

The value is unreal. I actually prefer the sound of them over a pair of $400 Ultrasone Pro900s I used to own. These have a great soundstage, punchy bass, forward and smooth mids (which are essential for trance), and terrific highs. They also isolate better than any non noise-canceling phones I've used and they're ridiculously comfortable. Hook 'em up to a headphone amp and bass boost them if you want. They'll take anything you can throw at them.

If you buy the M50s, you'll be spending more for less, in my opinion.

u/Vliger2002 · 3 pointsr/headphones

If you're learning to record and mix, you want something analytical, not really entertaining. My personal recommendation for a comfortable closed back headphone that has a neutral sound signature, good isolation (especially if you're going to be monitoring) is the NVX XPT100 for a mere $80.

I own them and have used them for recording, mixing, mastering. As for V-MODA, I own the Crossfade 2 Wireless Codex Edition (recently received them to review). They are excellent headphones, but I wouldn't use them for professional work. They are more V-shaped and would lead you to create a mix that sounds great in the V-MODA, but doesn't translate well to other headphones or speakers.

u/andysaurus_rex · 3 pointsr/headphones

The M50 dip down to the $100 price range fairly frequently. If you don't mind buying a pair lightly used then you can get them for under $100 on Amazon. I think that consensus is, no, the M30 is not comparable to the M50. They are more of an entry level headphone and you will likely be disappointed by them if you're comparing them to your grados or the M50s. If you aren't convinced, the NVX XPT100 are supposed to be pretty good too. They're more neutral than the M50s but for $20-$50 less. The M50 are supposedly more bassy and more "fun" but the NVX are more true to the music if you understand what I mean. You can't go wrong with the M50, but if you're not willing to buy used or spend more than $100 the NVX XPT100 are also good.

u/Lolvalchuck · 2 pointsr/GoodValue

NVX Audio XPT100 For $100 you will be hard pressed to find a better pair of headphones. I have a pair of these and they are by far the most comfortable pair I have ever had and have an amazing sound stage. They're much better than headphones like Audio-Technica ATH-M50 that everyone recommends. They're comparable to headphones costing twice as much. /r/headphones will vouch for them.

u/DevIceMan · 2 pointsr/cscareerquestions

NVX XPT100 - Great sound, extremely comfortable, closed ear.

I find open offices very difficult to work in. They can be good for things which require a lot of communication, but otherwise are extremely distracting. It's even worse when you can actually see the distractions, since headphones can't exactly block that out.

u/bluegarfield · 2 pointsr/buildapc

I want to buy a pair of headphones through Amazon, this one but it shows 3 different sellers, from which only Sonic Electronix, Inc ship internationally, but that one is not handled by Amazon in any way.

My question is if it is safer to buy from those seller via Amazon, or just go to their site and make purchase directly? Also, what is Amazon's role and responsibility in those sale?

Thanks

u/FavorMusik · 2 pointsr/Jazz

NVT XPT-100'S. Only $100, amazing detail and soundstage. You will not find a better set of cans for the price.

Hun, nothing that is currently on Massdrop satisfies your criteria. As for the two choices you are considering, I've heard that the M50X can be uncomfortable and I've never seen any recommendations of the HD280s so I presume they aren't the best in the price bracket. I think you may want to consider the NVX XPT100 too though. They seem to suit your music taste more than the former two.

These are great for their price. If you wanted you could get an amp (or something, not super familiar with all the audiophile stuff) to boost the bass tho because it's not there as much as in like most popular headphones.

u/Mad_Economist · 2 pointsr/CabaloftheBuildsmiths

Hmm, not a lot to spend on speakers and headphones. Shooting from the hip, around that budget, I'd probably go one of two directions:

A pair of reasonable-ish entry-level speakers - something in the vein of the Micca [MB42] (https://www.amazon.com/Micca-PB42X-Powered-Bookshelf-Speakers/dp/B009IUIV4A) (which is passive, and so requires an amplifier, which can be [pretty cheap for a very budget option] (https://www.amazon.com/Lepy-LP-2020A-Class-D-Digital-Amplifier/dp/B01FZKA28Y/ref=sr_1_7?keywords=class+t+amplifier&qid=1573193876&s=electronics&sr=1-7))/[PB42X] (https://www.amazon.com/Micca-PB42X-Powered-Bookshelf-Speakers/dp/B00NXAEPDC) (which is powered and so requires no amplifier) - which will run something a little north of $100 unless you're down to buy used, plus a reasonable lower mid end closed headphone ([NVX's branding of the Yoga CD880] (https://www.amazon.com/NVX-Over-Ear-Headphones-ComfortMax-XPT100/dp/B0093PVTPS) is a pick I like a fair bit). These speakers will be pretty alright, albeit imperfect to be sure, and there are a few decent-to-good closed-back options in the ~$100 range.

Alternatively, if speaker quality is literally of no importance, you could go for something in the budget range of those Logitechs - there really are absolutely not options that cheap that are any good at all, but if you only use speakers to occasionally listen to youtube videos, it might be acceptable. That would leave more budget to allocate to the headphone side of things, where you'd have options like [AKG's] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=svAmJheRxAg) K371, NAD'S HP50,or on the used side of the street [AKG's] (https://www.rtings.com/headphones/reviews/akg/n700nc-wireless) N700NC, which are quite robust options in the closed-back world (particularly, in my opinion, the N700NC, which sounds fantastic to my ears with its digital signal processing active, and has quite good noise cancelling as well).

It's a bit of a tight squeeze regardless - if you're down with used gear, you can get a bit more for your dollar, but at very low price points you're in a space where shipping costs may dwarf savings, so even that might not help much, outside of headphones (which don't cost much to ship, and have a quite vibrant used market).

If you'd like more information or options, just let me know - I've thrown some links in above, but I'm pretty short of time today, so I figured I'd offer what I had from the top of my head rather than leaving you waiting.

The NVX XPT100 sounds like it is exactly what you are looking for.

u/robakri · 2 pointsr/headphones

I'd say you look into either the takstar pro 80 (bassier) or the NVX Audio XPT100 (comfier).

A great option for you is to get the takstar pro 80 and the thick memory foam hm5 pads (which takes the takstar comfort to better than nvx).

If you are feeling nuts you can even get some colored pads.

NVX XPT100. Moderate isolation and very neutral sound.

u/SleepyHippo · 2 pointsr/headphones

These are basically two pillows strapped to your head.
If he's using them at home, the SHP9500 are great but they don't isolate (open back headphones) but great for gaming.

Maybe a pair of M40x? I never tried them though.

u/Markyy88 · 2 pointsr/headphones

NVX XPT100 They are the same as the Brainwavz HM5 headphones. Brainwavz made a clone off these for 105.99 while these are cheaper. I bought the zalman mic for gaming too and its pretty good.

Something I've been eyeing for awhile. It's a neutral sound and a common rebranded pair of cans, BUT the cushions are supposed to be comfortable as hell. You could get a cheap clip on mic to make it a headset. People in the reviews also talk about the company honoring the life warranty on the pads.

Either way, I'd avoid Sennheiser. All of their cans have thin cords that once damaged cost as much (or more) than the cans to get replaced. Good cans will have thick cords.

For that type of music I would recommend the following two headphones

Budget $120

Source Nexus 7, ASUS Z77 Extreme4 Motherboard, PS4

Requirements for Isolation I don't mind being able to hear my surroundings a bit, I'd like very little sound leakage though. Isolation isn't a deal breaker unless the isolation is particularly bad for a closed headphone.

Preferred Type of Headphone Over-ear closed

Preferred tonal balance Never owned a good pair of headphones so I can't say based on experience, but from what I read I think neurtal/articulate/imaging/accurate/nice soundstage headphones would be best.

Past Headphones Best headphones I've owned have been super cheap ones. Best thing I've owned sound wise is a Turtle Beach PX22 Headset ($60)

Preferred Music I'm mostly using these for gaming/watching videos/listening to podcasts, I don't have a specific music I listen to, but the first real thing I plan to do with these headphones is playing Dragon Age: Inquisition, [here] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oQDs5P42MNg) is the main theme for that, I like this kind of music atm.

These brainwavz hm5 clones, neutral sound for recording. I love my ath-m50, but they aren't neutral.

These are more comfortable as well than the ath-m50.

u/MishaIsAQT · 1 pointr/aetherforged

I'm listening to them on these: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0093PVTPS/

It didn't really hurt per say, it just didn't sound right together at all. The first time it was kind of like, "Woah what" and I had to go back and relisten to make sure it didn't sound that bad as I first thought it did (it was better the second time listening) but listening from the very beginning and getting to that point it didn't feel like it belonged in the song at all.

I ended up going for https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0093PVTPS/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 because low clamping strength and big cups. Sounded about the same as the m50x at any rate

u/dhero27 · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

Here's what I use currently for gaming, because they're moderately open, the directional audio is great for FPS. Plus those damn earpads man, you can wear them for hours (5+) with no fatigue for those real long gaming sessions. Ask about them on /r/headphones and this is what is usually recommended for gaming under $100.

u/zetaridley · 1 pointr/buildapc

With regards to computer speakers, the general consensus is that they are all kinda shit.

Typically what you want for really good audio is bookshelf speakers like this. Nice thing about these is that you don't need an amp.

The alternative is a good set of headphones like the NVX or the AKG 240. Any option you peak should give you a good immersion experience. Check out /r/headphones too if you're looking at headphones.

u/TheSecondTier · 1 pointr/headphones

All I can suggest is the pair that I own, the NVX XPT100's, but they're excellent at sound isolation and ridiculously comfortable, so they seem to fit your needs. 80 bucks on Amazon.

u/wtb_relief · 1 pointr/headphones

Budget – 50-100$ (or very close if improvement is large for a few extra bucks)

Source - Desktop

Requirements for Isolation – Don't want to wake up people or disturb the quiet work office.

Will you be using these Headphones in Public? Yes

Preferred Type of Headphone – full-sized over-ear

Preferred Music – Rock, Epic Music, Classical, and I play games a lot ( a large variety)

Im currently stuck in between NVX XTP100 and CAL. What will give me the best bang for gaming (BF4, LoL, D3, etc.) and is there anything else that's close? How much better is the sound quality of one compared to the other? Is the extra 40 bucks for XTP100 worth it if it is indeed better? I need to order today or tomorrow :/

If you want public, the NVX XPT100 is great. Not the most portable, but noise isolation is good while still having good soundstage for a set of closed cans. Also the most comfortable set you'll wear that doesn't cost $250+, especially if you use their angled ear pads that are included. The price is normally $80, so ignore the $100 listed and wait a bit for the decent priced sellers to get more in stock.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0093PVTPS/

If you want better quality and you're OK with paying more, the new Sennheiser 598 Cs (Cs are closed, other letter version are open) are amazing. $100 is a good sale price, which it's at now.

u/macmac9900 · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

If u prioritize no sound leakage over a bigger sound stage, you should consider these

u/QuipA · 1 pointr/headphones

> Balanced except for bass, which I'd like to be strong if possible.

That's unfortunately not how it works. If you have a strong bass presence, mids will suffer. You can't have strong bass in a neutral headphone. People also tend to confuse more bass vs. good bass. Good bass is subtle and may have less of a kick to it, but it has texture.

> Isolation: Some or none

Since you state you'll be using these headphone with a phone, I assume you want to wear them outside and in public. In this case isolation is an absolute requirement. Open back headphones will leak the music to the outside and people around you can hear what you are listening to.

I suggest you take a look at these models:

  • Brainwavz HM5 // NVX XPT 100: Very comfortable, neutral sounding headphones with a surprisingly wide stage for a closed back headphone in this price range. Unfortunately, they are rather bulky and cannot be easily carried around; they are meant to be used at home.

  • ATH M40X. A good looking and neutral sounding model (with a light bass tilt) that has a detachable cable and swiveling cups. Can't really be beaten at the current amazon price. But naturally this pair has its disadvantages as well. The relatively small pleather pads only allow for sufficient comfort (nowhere near the godlike HM5 / XPT100 pads) and the soundstage is rather "intimate" (read narrow / small). However, the music you mentioned doesn't really benefit from great soundstage and I think the M40X will be a good match.

If you want to go all out on the bass: V-Moda LP2
u/ScarlettSerenity · 1 pointr/hiphopheads

Get some headphones with ridiculous padding, if you get a chance. I've got these and the alternate pads they come with (not shown in the pictures, I think) have padding that's like an inch thick at the back and they're the most comfortable things I've ever worn.

u/SanjiWatsuki · 1 pointr/headphones

None of these headphones are slouches when it comes to comfort, but I don't know how well they handle glasses. A quick search suggests that people with glasses say they work well with the Brainwavz HM5 and the HD558.

[Here's a cheaper rebrand if you specifically want to use Amazon.] (http://www.amazon.com/Over-Ear-Headphones-ComfortMax-Cushions-Earpads/dp/B0093PVTPS)

Here's the $50 + $20 Jaycars.

u/JustOutOfTime · 1 pointr/audio

If all you're using these for is gaming, I'd say comfort is a pretty huge factor and while I've never used the HyperX Cloud 2s, I can say that the ATH-M40x are ridiculously uncomfortable. They clamp hard, the pads aren't very soft and the top headband is funky.

Here's a few cans I have tried that I can recommend:

Status Audio CB-1 $79 - http://thestatusaudio.com/products/cb1

Philips SHP 9500 $50-70 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826138190

Either of these two can use the V-Moda Boom pro attachment to become a nice headset. $30 - https://www.amazon.com/V-MODA-BoomPro-Gaming-Headset-Headphone/dp/B00BJ17WKK

These NVX headphones don't have the 3.5mm single input for the boompro, but they're really goddamn comfortable, sound pretty good and come with 2 different sets of pads that are both really nice. You could just pick up a Sony clip-on mic to use with these.

NVX XPT 100 $80 - https://www.amazon.com/Perfect10-Over-Ear-Headphones-ComfortMax®-XPT100/dp/B0093PVTPS/

u/getoutofheretaffer · 1 pointr/headphones

A cheaper alternative would be the NVX XPT100.

u/NinjaBlob · 1 pointr/headphones

Posting again to see if I can get any more opinions:

Budget - soft $100, hard $150

Source - Phone and PC

Requirements for Isolation - I'll mostly be using them in public places (bus, college lounges, work), so more is better.

Preferred Type of Headphone - over-ear

Preferred tonal balance - Balanced overall, but with strong melody ranges and bass? So warm to neutral, probably? (I'm new at this)

Past headphones - Sennheiser HD 280 and 439. Liked the sound of the 439 a lot (particularly with pop and EDM), but not a huge fan of the felt-like padding or the plasticky build (though it was sturdy).

Preferred Music - Hugely varied, but currently leaning towards pop/dance, EDM, rock, and indie rock/pop. Recent playlists include Monsters & Men, Zedd, Flo Rida, Little Mix, Green Day, Owl City, and the Jackson 5.

Since last time, I think I've narrowed it down to Audio-Technica ATH-M40x, Creative Aurvana Live, Brainwavz HM5, and NVX XPT100, but I'm open to anything. I thought I had settled on the HM5s, but then I found XPT100s are the same thing (with different pads/headband) for $50 less, and a number of reviews (see here) ranked the M40x above either (due to poor fit), so now I'm unsure again.

u/papabrain · 1 pointr/headphones

First of all, the headphone buying FAQ and excel doc is wonderful. It encourages research before blindly posting, and I think that's great. I want to thank this subreddit for the straight-forward help. Okay, on to my 'requirements' now.

  • Location: France

  • Budget: "Entry Level" 75-150€

  • Source: Laptop & mp3 player (Zune)

  • Isolation: Closed, over-ear headphones.

I don't intend to travel with these headphones, but I'd like to be able to wear them in a library without bothering others, and shut out the noise of a busy cafe, if possible.

  • Preferred Type of Headphone: Full-sized

  • Preferred tonal balance: I'm guessing Neutral.

My "Preferred Music" might suggest otherwise, I'm not sure. I understand the mechanics behind what dark/warm, V-shaped, and Neutral sound means, but I don't know the differences in sound.

In my recent reading, I read that having it sound like the music is playing inside my head could be undesirable, but I've always enjoyed that effect (albeit with low-cost IEMs).

That said, I don't even know what an "open soundstage" would sound like. If y'all think I should try something new... well, I am here for advice and I intend to hear ya out.

  • Past headphones: I'm a frequent buyer of 10-15€ IEM headphones.

I've bought Phillips, Sony, Skullcandy, JVC and probably others. The last couple were Sony, I think. I like these because of they're easy to travel with and they're efficient in shutting out noise and not bothering others.

Also, they're cheap to replace when I inevitably tear the cables. Headphones with a removable cable would be best... I'm a clumsy bastard.

  • Preferred Music: Pretty much everything. I don't listen to much Metal or Pop music. I have a lot of tinny old Blues recordings, so detail clarity is important.

  • Options: From the excel doc, FAQ, and the Head-Fi guide, I found these: NVX XPT100, KRK KNS6400, and Sennheiser HD280. If I understood correctly, these choices should help me to avoid an amp, for now.

  • Other Info: I have high-frequency hearing loss in my left ear.

Let me know if I'm heading in the right direction, or if I done messed up somehow. Again, thanks to the people who contribute to this subreddit. It's been an enlightening hour or so.

I use the Mad Dogs every day. When I don't have any music playing I can hear background noise in my house. Same for my PC, until I put the music on I can hear the fans on my PC. I love my Mad Dogs but and closed headphone would do a better job.

For $100 bucks you could buy the NVX Audio XPT100. They cover even large ears, have large angled pads, and are 100 closed with no ports.

Due to unexpected costs I could not afford to get a headphone amplifier, so the solution I found was to use Fauxsound to boost the analog headphone amplifier. Fauxsound requires kernel support so I'm trapped using a kernel with Fauxsound support for as long as I gave this device.

So why am I using the Render kernel specifically? To be honest, because it's the only custom kernel available for the G2 running Lollipop. The only other custom kernel around is the Dorimanx kernel and that's designed for KitKat AOSP and stock only.

But this kernel does have quite a few advantages over Dorimanx anyway. The entire kernel is controllable through Synapse, while Dorimanx splits its options through both Synapse and STweaks. Other than that, I just tweaked the default settings to put the max CPU back up to 2265Mhz, and overclock the GPU to a max of 650Mhz.

All info below. Thanks in advance!

Budget: ~ $100. This is pretty flexible though. I'd be willing to spend around $150 if I though it was worth it.

Source: Laptop, iPad, iPhone

Requirements for isolation: I'd like a fair amount of isolation. I'm starting school in the fall so i'll be doing a lot of studying. I'm sure I'll be spending lots of time in a library where it isn't too loud to begin with, but I do like studying in cafes and other public areas as well.

Preferred Type of headphone: Full-sized.

Preferred tonal balance: I'm thinking i'd like something pretty balanced since I listen to a wide array of music genres.

Past headphones: I've never owned a "nice" pair of headphones. I've always had the $20 kind of headphones you get from walmart, best buy, etc.

Preferred music: Everything from electronic/house to old-school rap to country.

After doing some of my own research (thank you, Headphone Buying Guide!!) I've come across some headphones that I think i'd like (below). Any opinions on these would be great. I'd also love some other options if you guys think I might be missing out on something!

Cheaper end of the price range:

NVX Audio XPT100 (http://www.amazon.com/NVX-Over-Ear-Headphones-ComfortMax-Cushions/dp/B0093PVTPS)

KRK KNS6400 (http://www.amazon.com/KRK-KNS6400-Studio-Headphones/dp/B004ARSMXQ)

Higher end of price range:

Audio-Technica ATH-M50xWH (http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-M50x-Professional-Monitor-Headphones/dp/B00HVLUR86)

KRK KNS8400 (http://www.amazon.com/KRK-KNS8400-Studio-Headphones/dp/B004ARUO2S)

Audio-Technica ATH-M50 (http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-M50-Professional-Monitor-Headphones/dp/B000ULAP4U)

Lastly, I'm pretty big on comfort. I plan on wearing these headphone for hours on end.

Thanks!

Budget: <$100

Source: PC / Phone

Isolation Requirements: Some. I'd like to play music at low-medium volumes without others hearing it. I will be using these outside and in public.

Preferred Type of Headphone: N/A

Tonal Balance: Neutral or V shaped

Past Headphones: Shit

Preferred Music: Electronic, Techno, Trance, Indie, Folk, Punk, Rock, Alternative, Pop, Reggae. Also stuff like Neutral Milk Hotel with interesting vocal melodies, horns n shit. But I also love bass.

So I'm looking to buy a new pair of headphones, and I've never owned a decent pair in the past. I've narrowed my search down to two particular pairs of headphones that I'm interested in. I'd like for you guys to help me decide which pair would be better for me or if there is a better choice for <$100

For gaming, you primarily want good sound quality and a solid soundstage (especially for competitive). Creative Aurvana Live! and NVX Audio XPT100 are great for under $100 if you like clsoed headphones. Sennheiser is great for open cans.

u/gutlessVADER · 1 pointr/headphones

I'm going to assume you're referring to these.

> The two biggest things I want are for it to be wireless and have a mic.

These are not wireless and do not have a mic.

oops my bad xpt100..the brainwavz hm5 are the same but a little better. I seen them for 10 less not too long ago. These are pretty popular within the community.

Well what headphones do you currently use? It's possible that there are some measurements somewhere online. Another option might be to start with a relatively inexpensive pair of neutral headphones, especially since you mentioned in another comment that you have a wide range of listening taste and you might be interested in something balanced. If you take the neutral approach, but prefer to EQ them, then that might help you decide what/if you want to upgrade.

If that sounds good to you, I would recommend the [NVX XPT 100] (https://smile.amazon.com/Perfect10-Over-Ear-Headphones-ComfortMax%C2%AE-XPT100/dp/B0093PVTPS?sa-no-redirect=1) a neutral and relatively inexpensive over-ear, closed-back headphone. Here is a review that was linked in the headphone purchase assistant if you would like to know more. If you are looking for a differnt form factor headphone, you could look through that purchase assistant for other neutral headphones.

I have one myself and I agree the HD600 are phenomenal for music but they're terrible for VR. They require an amp so you're going to have two extra cables going from your head to your desk or wherever the amp is. Even portable ones would be a hassle.

Secondly, the cable that comes with it is quite long and it will get in the way. See here https://youtu.be/VLNu3-7QL_w?t=171
The cables are proprietary also and they aren't cheap.

Personally I ordered the NVX XPT100 http://www.amazon.com/NVX-Over-Ear-Headphones-ComfortMax-Cushions/dp/B0093PVTPS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1457366316&sr=8-1&keywords=xpt100

$80 so quite cheap compared to the HD600 and should be much more comfortable. I find the HD600's clamp quite strong. Low impedance so the HMD should drive it perfectly fine and it comes with a short 1.2m cable. Plus they are closed which should help with immersion

Alright guys, here it is.

Budget: $150ish. Can bend a little.

Source: iphone 5, ipod classic (like seriously, from decades ago. You can hear it click as it works), a mac, and if gaming applicable, a Samsung TV and Xbox One. I already have a converter for my old turtle beaches, so audio ports to the One won't be a problem either way.

Isolation: I'll probably use these for some travel, but largely just for personal use where I won't bother other people.

Type: I want over the ears. I've never really had any until I got some cheap turtle beaches and they are so much better. If ya'll can explain why open or closed is better, than I'll go with what you suggest.

Tonal Balance: This one's tough. I want to hear the bass clearly, not muddy. But I also don't want it to overpower the other components. When I listen to a song after the first time, I'll attempt to hear every part, usually one at a time over multiple plays. I don't want to lose a whole section and not even know it, I want to know how they all fit together. So I guess overall balanced, unless ya'll can find a better fit.

Past Headphones: Recently, in ear skullcandy ones. Mainly because they were there and nicer than any I'd owned before. I had a pair specifically because they came with a small convenient carrying case. When they broke after two years, I bought some titans, and I greatly enjoyed the improvement. I think it might have been the metal casing, but they are much clearer. But now I want some real quality ones.

Preferred music: Rap, rock, metal, "country" (much better musicianship than 90% of the stuff), acoustic versions of the aforementioned genres, Hans Zimmer, the Beatles, Daft Punk, Justice, podcasts recorded in large auditoriums, etc.

Not sure if I want just headphones or a replacement for my turtle beaches that I can easily use for just music (i.e. portable). If the sound quality takes a downturn because of gaming capability, than I'll live without.

And I'll be fine if it needs an amp as long as it doesn't go too much over my budget. I also have no idea which devices need amps more or anything about that system really.

I had previously looked at the XPT100s, but I didn't know if those were a good fit for me, and it was also before I considered the gaming possibility. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Go with the NVX XPT100. It's a clone of the HM5 but is cheaper and includes angled pads which are amazing.

I currently have my PC, PS4, PS3, and Nintendo Switch all hooked up to one monitor. PC with Display port, the others with an HDMI switch. My PC audio goes to my headphones (Which are connected directly to the PC with a 3.5mm cable) and my consoles play the audio through my ASUS VG248QE monitor's speakers. I wanted to run all of the audio through my headphones so that I could hear my PC and whichever console I am currently playing at the same time. I achieved this by connecting a 3.5mm cable to the green headphones jack in my monitor and then connecting the other end to the blue line-in jack on my PC's motherboard. However their was a noticable static effect in the background which also grew louder whenever I moved my mouse or used the scroll wheel. Also my terribly basic microphone no longer worked when the line in was connected.

I really know very little about audio and was hoping some one would recommend me whatever I need (Amp, DAC, AV reciever, sound card, etc) in order to have a clear sound without audio interference coming from my consoles and PC to my headphones. Also a better desktop mic would likely be needed since my friends say they can hear a constant static from my end whenever I talk.

Budget wise I guess my limit would be about $1000 but I really have no clue how cheap or how expensive the stuff I would need is since I have no clue what I actually need in the first place.

Any help is appreciated since I feel pretty lost about all this stuff.

Budget - around US$150 and US$200 (can be a lot more like US$600, depending on durability; so a good margin here)

Source - computer (PC/Notebook)

Requirements for Isolation - Not sure, to be honest. I will use them only at home/work.

Will you be using these Headphones in Public? - No. Not at all.

Preferred Type of Headphone - Over the ear (with mic is a plus but not required)

Preferred tonal balance - high. volume. like, really loud. I don't understand that much but I need something capable of act almost like a pc speaker because I have some hearing problem (yes, literally)

Past headphones - Sony Pulse Elite Wireless. 3 of them.

Preferred Music - rock, metal, pop, ost games and others. since I only want a loud one is not really important, I guess.

What would you like to improve on from your set-up - I don't like they break in like 6-8 months. I hate the input for USB/charging cable because it stops working in a few months. I have 3 pairs of this thing and I really like the volume; really high/loud (I don't use that "bass impact" at all). I did buy a Razer Kraken V2 and, I don't know if was something with the computeres I tested, but this had really low volume (other people confirmed too) - but they were very confortable. I would like to keep volume high as the Pulse Elite and, if possible, a bit more confortable - since I keep it 10 hours a day and use glasses; but volume is top priority.

Hope you guys can help since I have no idea where/what to search. SPL/sensitivity seems to be something overlooked by the companies and not a standardized measure.

the assistant gave me two choices: NVX XPT100 and Brainwavz HM5 but I don't know if any of them are as loud as Pulse Elite

I also have a pair of NVX XTP-100's that I absolutely love sound and comfort wise. Sound is fantastic at the price point and comfort wise I HIGHLY recommend them to anyone with a larger dome.

However... They do have a pretty severe design flaw. The arms on the headband that attach to the cans are shockingly weak and are prone to breaking. I'm on my second headband over the course of 5 years and it broke as well. (its currently held together by gorrila glue and looks horrific but I have it stowed away as a backup closed back set) I know 5 years is a good bit of time but that part shouldn't be that weak. They could easily reinforce it with a small amount of stronger material.

If you really baby them (which I do not) they would probably hold up much longer, but something to consider if you decide to try them out. I'm not sure you could do better on sound and comfort at that price. The headband issue is a bummer though or else they would be a 10/10 easily for me.

Here is an Amazon link for the XTP-100's

Well, everything arrived. The UMIK-1 is a nice piece of hardware. To complete my desktop setup I also got:

  • The Pioneer BS-22s
  • One Behringer UCA202 DAC

Now for the best part. I scratched some extra cash this month out of my budget and also ordered (they are yet to arrive):

  • Sennheiser HD650 headphones
  • Monoprice Desktop Headphones Amp / DAC

I'm thinking that the next step would be to move to the O2+ODAC. I'd like to build them myself, so I'll probably order one O2 kit first and later either the ODAC PCB with the DAC already soldered, or the entire soldered ODAC PCB.

Also for the future is upgrading my closed back headphones I use at work, probably to an NVX XPT100 (thanks /u/ZeosPantera for leading me to them). Then I'll move the Monoprice Amp/DAC to the office to drive them and keep the O2+ODAC at home. The current headphones I have at the office sound pretty decent but I can't wear them for more than an hour. So comfort is paramount for my office headphones.

    What do you think?

Can you point me to good resources on how to use REW + the UMIK-1 to measure the speaker responses? I still have the BS-21s (they'll be shipping back to Amazon soon) so I'm planning to measure them too. I didn't remove the grilles from them because I think it will be hard to stick them back on and don't want to return them without them on. So far I've read these articles:

  • UMIK-1 setup with REW
  • Loudspeaker measurement with UMIK-1 and REW

    Will that be enough?

Are these NVX available where you're from?

u/theTreeG · 1 pointr/headphones

I have a set of NVX headphones.

They meet my needs really well but occasionally I feel like my laptop (lenovo yoga) can't push them hard enough and my phone (galaxy s5) definitely cannot.

I'm not a huge audiophile (can't quite hear the difference in lossless on the tidal thing but could be my setup...) and am just looking to drive these a bit, would an amp be beneficial in my position?

Quick edit: I mostly use these headphones at home on my laptop but would occasionally like to use my phone. (+added details)

u/beowulfpt · 1 pointr/headphones

You should try the much hyped XPT100 then. It's a set I put on and after 5 minutes of "blargh!" I was taking them off and repackaging. Couldn't return them, so they're still packed waiting for a buyer.

Budget - Prefer around $70 but can go upto $100

Source - Laptop (Dell 15RSE) or Mobile (iPhone SE)

Requirements for Isolation - Some isolation needed

Will you be using these Headphones in Public? - Yes

Preferred Type of Headphone - full-sized, or on-ear

Preferred tonal balance - overall balanced

Past headphones - Panasonic HJE120E (purchased and used multiple times over past few years) - Found them to be relatively neutral and giving more detail than "standard earphones that come with the mobile". But since they are IEMs, they are not comfortable for very long durations. Also, looking to step up to higher quality sound now :)

Preferred Music - Varies from Progressive House to Metal to Acoustic to sometimes just audio books. This is why I am looking for a good balanced pair of headphones.

What would you like to improve on from your set-up - More detail. More comfort for extended duration (for example, listening to music while working throughout the day, and while commuting).

Additional info - I'd prefer ones with removable cable.

Currently considering - NVX XPT100

Please let me know if the headphones I am considering right now match well with what I want, or whether I can step up from them to something better.

Thanks a lot :)

I use and recommend these. For their price they provide an amazing sound reproduction, and for a closed-back pair it has unbelievably big soundstage. And they are super comfy

Edit: they aren't on Amazon anymore... So have a SonicElectronix link instead! Or search for Brainwavz HM5 instead, since it's the exact same thing

Better isolation that M50s, but significantly more comfortable in my experience. I can easily wear them for 4+ hours and just forget they're on.

u/kare_kano · 1 pointr/headphones

Oh, definitely. Fostex T50RP Mk3 would be my first suggestion, with the previous version, the Mk2 (review), as backup in case $150 is a hard limit (if it's not, get the Mk3 of course).

I will also mention the NVX XPT100 which are another great inexpensive all-rounder with a balanced sound, I include this in case you want a "true" sealed back (the Fostex are semi-open, but they isolate fairly well).

Type: Over ears

I was looking at things like the ATH M50s and Sennheisers for a while. I decided to pop into the Audio IRC and was convinced that these would be better than almost anything else for the price and that I could really only get better sound if I jumped up a couple hundred dollars:
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0093PVTPS/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=3KUGA91WS2W1L&coliid=I24KJW9ZFDVZOX

I have never heard of them before which makes me slightly skeptical but he really seemed to know what he was talking about. I just wanted a second opinion on them.

u/ShearMe · 1 pointr/headphones

Plantronics RIG if you absolutely must has teh gaymin herdset. It comes with a console-compatible DAC/amp do-dad (soundcard).

I would highly suggest getting all separate components. I use a Syba DAC (soundcard) but your onboard sound might be just fine - only get a soundcard or external unit if you hear crackles, pops, etc with your mobo, or need more volume, imo. For headphones, NVX XPT100 is a safe and comfortable bet. Just add a ModMic and you're good to go!

u/grass_cutter · 1 pointr/headphones

Yeah it seems the mic problem is a bigger problem than the headphones.

Full headsets seem to be regarded as overpriced crap.

The headphone + mic combo seems preferred, and yet, no one has seemed to have found the perfect answer.

Desk mics pic up too much ambient noise with the exception of maybe $100+ models.

The other option are cord/ clip mics largely regarded as cheap crap, or two esoteric options --- the modmic, which has debatable quality and is a bit steep at $42 dollars. Or the V-Moda Boom pro, which only works with headphones with a 3.5mm input jack, which many do not have.

I was definitely looking at the NVX Perfect 10 - but again, not compatable with the Vmoda boom pro.
