If you're going to spend that much for a 120GB SSD, spend a little less and get a really nice 250GB SSD.

Sorry it took so long!

Plan 1 - a new laptop and a refurbished one: If you want to get the 13 year old something nicer, go for the ThinkPad T450 (NOT T450s) directly from Lenovo's site.

http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/thinkpad/t-series/t450/

I'd configure it with i5-5200U, 8 GB RAM, 180 GB SSD (deselect the NGFF), 1080p nontouch display. I'd buy this today, 6 December, as you get significant ($300 ish) savings. It should cost $1020 or so when configured.

Then, for your 6 year old, buy this ThinkPad X201 with Core i5-520M, 4GB RAM, 128GB SSD for $220:

http://arrowdirect.com/lenovo-thinkpad-x201-2-4ghz-intel-core-i5-gen1-128-ssdgb-4096gb.html

Total: $1253.70 plus tax

Plan 2 - Refurbished monsters: I like this plan a little more, but you have to do a bit of work yourself. Buy two of these ThinkPad T430s laptops with i5-3320M, 4GB RAM, 128GB SSD from Arrow Direct:

http://arrowdirect.com/lenovo-t430s-2-60ghz-intel-core-i5-gen3-128-ssdgb-4096mb.html

Then, some upgrades. Buy two of these Crucial BX100 250GB SSDs from Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/Crucial-BX100-250GB-Internal-Solid/dp/B00RQA6TEI

(I know that the laptops come with SSDs, but they will be crusty old slow 2011 SSDs). Please don't buy the newer BX200 as they are made cheaply and they are twice as slow.

Also, buy two of these 16 GB RAM kits from here:

http://www.amazon.com/Crucial-DDR3L-1600-PC3-12800-CT2K8G3S160BM-CT2C8G3S160BM/dp/B008LTBJFW/

These will take some time to put together, but they will give you two 3.9 LB monsters.

Total: $990.28 plus tax plus twenty minutes of your time

Plan 3 - The HP route: Buy two of these HP EliteBook 9480M laptops with i5-4310U, 4GB RAM, 180GB SSD from Arrow Direct:

http://arrowdirect.com/hp-compaq-elitebook-folio-9480m-2-00ghz-intel-core-i5-gen4-180-ssdgb-4096mb-5.html

Then buy the same 16GB RAM kits from Amazon. You don't need to replace the SSDs as they are from 2013-2014 and are just as fast as today's SSDs.

Total: $1002.68 plus tax plus ten minutes of your time

Of these three plans, I like Plan 2 the best as long as you have the time (and judging from the fact that you use Gentoo, you should).

There is really no point in buying a 64GB SSD, Windows alone will take up about 40GB of that. Even more so when you consider that you can buy an SSD with double the storage capacity for less than $70, or even four times the amount of storage for less than $100.

I'm guessing that you don't want to overclock, so you should not spend that much money on a liquid cooler. The Stock one will do fine with an i-5 4460, if you want an aftermarket cooler, get the Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO.

If you want to overclock go with a Z97 Mobo and i5- 4690k.

A bit above my price range I think ill get this when I can

u/akira_ikeda · 2 pointsr/buildapcsales

Just an FYI to everyone planning on purchasing this,

it's a good deal but it's not actually that good a deal. SSD prices have been getting lower in the last few months.

$67 isn't that great a deal for a 250GB SSD, at this point. While this time last year, SSD's of that size ran about $80-$100, I think the average price is ~$70 now.

I build systems constantly, and I personally recommend the ADATA Premier SP550 SSDs.

Crucial BX100 250GB read/write: 535/370 MB/s advertised. Price: $66.99 at the moment. Same link as the post.

ADATA Premier SP550 240GB read/write: 560/510 MB/s advertised. Price: $63.99 right now. Amazon link here.

It's 10GB's less, but makes up for it in write speed, and (in my opinion) looks as well.

No, I'm not some ADATA rep. Just throwing the info out there 'cause I've been building my systems with ADATA recently and they're just cheap but great quality drives.

Crucial BX100 is $67 on Amazon.

Samsung, Intel/Micron, Toshiba/Sandisk/OCZ and Hynix are the only ones who produce their own NAND. They keep the best dies and sell the rest after they get first dibs on production after each shrink. Mushkin Reactor got a good Anandtech review. That it's MLC instead of TLC is great, but why would one pick a non-tier 1 brand if it's not any cheaper?

u/awpaca · 1 pointr/buildapc

Would something like this be sufficient? How would I go about moving everything to the SSD? Manually dragging it over or is there a program that can do it for me?

u/Slixxable · 1 pointr/buildapc

oh - ur right .. no idea why it isnt listed up there but i got the

Radeon HD 7870 and my F: port is an SSD

sorry for the inconvenience :x

This or this depending on how much you want to spend. Both perform very well. I have the 256gb mx100 and it's great

u/Soakedlol · 1 pointr/buildapc

Well, that's unfortunate but there is a BX100 for $95, it's cheaper than the MX100 and performs just as well http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00RQA6TEI/

The OCZ did have a $20 rebate though and this does not so I wouldn't feel too bad

Crucial Tech here.

Your T420 has a SATA 3 controller, so theoretical you should get the full performance of any SATA3 SSD you buy, even the more expensive pro and performance drives. Realistically though you do not need to get a top of the line SSD, pretty much any SSD you buy on the market right now will give near identical performance for your setup; so I would honestly save yourself and get a less expensive drive, that comes from a reputable company.

We released the BX100 SSD not that long ago as a "Budget" drive, it doesn't come 256bit encryption or dynamic write acceleration like some of our other drives, but raw read performance and IOPs ratings are still really fast, and will work great in your laptop.

Looks like it's about as fast as everyone else within a reasonable margin.

u/mrwatsont · 1 pointr/buildapc

I would defiantly get an SSD it makes a huger difference. Fancy peripherals come next. I bought this SSD http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00RQA6TEI/?tag=pcpapi-20 and I'm very happy with it so far :)

u/MyGubbins · 1 pointr/buildapc

Although I know it is a lot less storage than the one currently on the list, would you recommend this one? If not, would it be feasible for me to forgo the SSD until I can afford a better one in a few weeks?

u/JonzieK · 1 pointr/buildapc

Better SSD for a few quid more and twice the space.

Edit: Or get this one

u/river82 · 1 pointr/buildapc

You could save money by getting the slightly slower Crucial BX100 instead.

u/friskevision · 1 pointr/osx

Crap, so sorry. I used that for my hackintosh desktop. Here's the drive I bought for my MBP, It's from Crucial: http://www.amazon.com/Crucial-BX100-250GB-Internal-Solid/dp/B00RQA6TEI?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_search_detailpage
