>He chose a medium that was easy for him.

This was a talk given at a conference. Fr. Huneycutt chose the medium that was appropriate given the situation. People--even academics--don't gather at conferences to collectively read. People gather to listen to lectures, to discuss and compare notes.

Also, it's interesting that you criticize Fr. Huneycutt for speaking rather than writing, when this whole conversation started with you complaining that you can more easily read than listen. As you wrote elsewhere in this thread:

>Yes, and if you need a bit more time to think about a point, you have to switch to it and pause. Or skip backwards. Or if you understand something you can't speed it up very well.

You're making the choice easiest for yourself in seeking written words, so don't begrudge the man doing the same by speaking.

>It would be out of the ordinary in the academic world for a man to give a lecture without first committing the points to a freely available paper, yes.

Fr. Huneycutt isn't in the academic world; he's a career priest. Even if he were in the academic world, again, that's not the context of this talk. He isn't presenting new research findings.

If you don't want to listen to something, that's fine. Don't pretend that it makes you somehow intellectually superior, or the speaker somehow inferior. You're better at reading than listening; he's chosen to spread this particular message verbally.

Do you skip your priest's sermons because he doesn't submit them in writing?

Fr. Huneycutt

knows how

to write.

Easy for him, indeed.

Some parishes have pews, others do not. Personally, I have a goatee only because I am a hairy guy and don't feel like shaving. Also, I am balding and shave my head and think that I look funny without any hair on my head. Read One Flew Over the Onion Dome for some perspective on what you might encounter when you attend an Orthodox parish.

Be aware, though, that there are also "Ultradox" parishes. My advice, talk to people at the parish. The more normal the people seem, the more I would encourage you to look into Orthodoxy at that parish. If all the people talk about is fasting and prostrations, take their conversations with a grain of salt.

God bless, whether you continue looking into Orthodoxy or not.
