I'd like to point out the /r/conlangs subreddit since you would get a better response there, but I'd be happy to throw a couple of recommendations your way.
Try In the Land of Invented Languages by Arika Okrent. I bought this book, but I lost it shortly after I bought it and never bought it again. I believe it's geared towards a general audience.
If you want to know about the ins and outs of making your own language, check out Mark Rosenfelder's Advanced Language Construction Kit. I haven't read that either, but I've been a fan of Mark Rosenfelder's original site, The Language Construction Kit when I was a budding linguist in the late 90s.
EDIT: A really old book that I found really interesting was Mario Pei's 1961 One Language for the World. Read it with a healthy dose of skepticism because of the age of the book and of course, Mario's ideas at the time. But I think it's worth the read for some historical information about conlangs/auxlangs of the time.
