Nice timing! Thinking ahead, I formulated the answer to your question earlier this afternoon. And it is: Rahsaan Roland Kirk. Nobody else has the colorful imagination, grasp of tradition, and unhinged joy at music-making that Mingus & Kirk share. There are plenty of records that would work: Volunteered Slavery, Rip Rig & Panic, Bright Moments, The Inflated Tear, Kirk In Copenhagen, We Free Kings - lots of 'em, and a couple nice compilations of the Atlantic years. But I would go with this [very neat cd collection] (https://www.amazon.com/Original-Album-RAHSAAN-ROLAND-KIRK/dp/B011Q9HH68) of five his Atlantic records. Terrific.
