Follow up LPT: Buy good, good freakin' jack stands. They'll last your entire life, and your life is more dependent upon them than literally any other tool. Took me a near-squish-experience to realize this.
I had an extra bit of cast/weld on one of the teeth on my brand new 6 ton typical ratcheting jack stands and that caused my 1968 M-715 (around 6,500 lbs) to slip one tooth on the jack. I since bought these OTC 22k jack stands after several hours of research and I think they're the best jack stands you can buy, money no object.
