Hey, brother.

I'm with you here, 100%. I'd like to recommend two books that I think will bring you some comfort:

  1. Our Thoughts Determine Our Lives, by +Elder Thaddeus

  2. The essay, "Taking Stock of Our Struggle", by then Archimandrite Irenei (now Bishop), in The Beginnings of a Life of Prayer

Above all, don't be afraid to set aside some quality time with your priest and share what you did above with him. If for some reason you don't feel he is able to understand or help you, I would recommend looking for another priest, even in a different jurisdiction, that you could see as your confessor (you don't have to leave your parish).

You might also check out Fr. Christophe Lepoutre's podcast series, Healing Addictions.

I'm telling you from experience: we are probably going to fall over and over again for a while. The key is to get up and brush yourself off quickly. Repent, get up, confess when you can, but don't dwell on things in the past - even if very recent. Live in the current moment, without overanalyzing the past or future.

    May God keep you!

hey, I strongly recommend checking how these two books.

  • Wounded by Love: The Life and Wisdom of Saint Porphyrios

I spent many years depressed and it was these two books which finally pulled me the last bit out of it.

One of the key insights from the first book which really helped me was "When a person has the Grace of God, his good thoughts are unbelievably powerful, because it is the power of God Himself that acts in us".

Of course there can be all sorts of things in your life that might be causing the depression but the takeaway is that, if you earnestly believe in God, earnestly respect him, earnestly want to be emotionally close to him, earnestly pray each day, then he will fill you with hope and faith and then your "good" thoughts will be much more powerful than normal and your depression will disappear.
