The correlations aren't as strong as you think. I know this isn't a Pubmed reference, but if you subtract the poor job that popular media does with science reporting and combine that with an aggressive sales campaign to move statins, you end up with an inaccurate meme that won't die
You can find a lot of unfounded, anti big pharma nonsense on the internet relative to cholesterol, but I'm not part of this camp. Read this book, written by a card carrying member of the American Medical Association, and you will then understand why concern about cholesterol is exaggerated
Or this basically, find books for the educated lay audience written by doctors. Atul Gawande, Jerome Groopman, Perry Klass. You won't have time to read it later and it will give you a much broader view of medicine.
